Baker got a reaction from druxey in Mary Rose by Baker - scale 1/50 - "Your Noblest Shippe"
and usually at an inconvenient moment 🙈
It was a bit too much.
We would all get seasick looking at the result 🤢

Baker reacted to mikegr in Rebuilding the fleet by mikegr - 1/700 - restoring old plastic models
First rebuilt is the deck.
Its came out pretty well even I sprayed with an oil paste-thick color for first time. The bow had enough detail, I just painted the anchor chain. The anti skip surface is a terrible overscale though.

Baker reacted to mrcc in Friesland 1663 by mrcc - Mamoli MV24 - 1:75
More details done this week... I sanded down the wheels on the gun carriages in order to get a firm contact for gluing the carriages down prior to them getting hidden from the deck above. I have to now varnish the deck and put the beams in in order to lay down the upper decks... going to use wipe on poly.
All fun so far!

That's a small signaling cannon probably then. Or something to make noise on certain holidays.

These shields are more like panels, only the upper deck of the rear castle should have shields. But it will take a while before I get there.
And some may be disappointed, but there is no room for toilet facilities at the front.
Little progress.
Since I retired a year earlier than planned, I am building faster than the research I had already done.
In the meantime, more is happening on the Corel yacht kit model
Only extra holes have been made in accordance with the rear castle.
And after measuring with the laser, the entire fore castle appeared to be a bit crooked in relation to the hull.
This has now been corrected. If I didn't tell anyone, no one would have noticed... 😇

Baker reacted to Kenchington in Hello from Nova Scotia
I signed up for MSW a few years ago, hoping to look and learn, but other commitments got in the way. Truth to tell, I don't think I have had the patience for ship modelling through the last half-century, but age has its effects and I'm slowing down now. I've also had more success than I expected with woodwork projects during a refit of my small (but full-scale) boat. So I've decided to embark on the Model Shipways trio: dory, pram and sloop. I'll see how far I get.
By way of introduction: I'm a marine biologist by education, a fisheries scientist by occupation and a sailor by inclination. However, I have published a few research papers in nautical archaeology and maritime history. (I see that one of my earlier contributions was chewed over some years back, here on MSW.) My interest is in ships (and smaller water craft), with models being one way to approach their prototypes, rather than an end in themselves.
Looking forward to leaning from everyone on MSW, as my attempt at a miniature dory proceeds ...

Baker reacted to Peter S in Hi from Down Under
Have just joined MSW after finding the site this past weekend. Am a very novice beginner, having only toyed with many plastic models as a teenager (many moons ago!). Now that I am retired wanted to try out building model ships, which is something I have always been interested in. Have bought the Artesania Latina HMS Bounty Jolly Boat as my first model. I have already started and put the frame together. Now on to the real challenge of planking. Have been reading lots of articles and tutorials, but have found them somewhat conflicting as there are many different approaches you can take. Trying to decide on which one to use!
Looking forward to getting stuck into the project and interacting with fellow modelers. It was good to see a number of Aussies here as well!
Have found this site to be a great resource.
Cheers

Baker reacted to Morgan in HMS Victory by dafi - Heller - PLASTIC - To Victory and beyond ...
I’m afraid what Victory has now is the abysmal 1980’s reconstruction, they have none of the elegance of Trafalgar, or even the 1920’s reconstruction.
The image below is from Bugler’s 1966 as-reconstructed drawings.
The current quarter galleries are slab sided in my view and far too upright. Heller have them correct.

Hello Kevin, thank you for pointimg that out. To be honest, never realized too much of a difference ...
What I see is the usual discrepancies if parts are build without too much planning. OK Vasa was worse 😉
I know that she had a collision with HMS Goliath on 03.04.1797 that damaged the stern Galeries, lantherns and cutter.
1803 the stern was completely changed.
At Trafalgar the starboard gallery was crashed by the Redoutable.
Also there was a great makeover of the stern somewhere inbetween 1816/1820/1828/1860ies as first photographies show a different stern compared to the post Trafalgar drawings.
And in the 1920 there was the retrofit for Trafalgar state where the galleries changed appaerance again.
And McGowan shows a picture of about 1970-1980 with the larboard gallery dismanteled.
So one sees there were many opportunities to mess up with the design of the galleries 😉
They are far off the elegant look they had as build. 😞😞😞

Baker reacted to Javelin in Scheldt River by Javelin - FINISHED - 1/1250 - Bottle - Dredger
Made some serious progress, eventhough I wasn't expecting to finish it by my next departure. Somewhere I do see a light at the end of the tunnel.
So now it's time to detail and to start test fitting to see if all that detailing will even fit through the neck.
On the top left of this picture you see a small "measuring stick" on the hull. This one has the height of the rescue boat davit. Luckily it fits, so I can build and attach that davit on the hull.
Then it was time for the "tool" and suspension test. It only existed in my imagination and I've thought of several iterations to improve it, but so far it seems ok the way it is.
I thought I wouldn't have enough moment to actually tilt it to an upright position, but it works quite fine to adapt the trim and list of the vessel.
In the bottle it will be hanging a lot closer to the tool, so I'll do that as well to avoid any surprises. It's quite a tight squeeze in the bottle.
The idea is to insert both halves with the ropes through the eyes, but ropes fixed outside of the bottle. Then connect the hull halves together. Then attach one end of each rope to the tool by a knot and get the other end through the hole in the tool and going out the bottle. This gives me 3 ropes out of the bottle to work with. I tried with both ends loose, but that makes 6 ropes and it makes a mess.
Further tests will follow during the detailing process. As there really is no room for error once it's in the bottle.

Baker reacted to djford in Mary Rose by djford - Caldercraft - 1:80
Thanks Steven. Yes, it seems silly to make any amendments for such a small percentage change. I've ended up leaving my mainmast as it is, but I have slightly shortened the main topmast and very slightly shortened the main topgallant mast - overall it's about 145ft from the deck now, which is still pretty tall, but now looks much more in proportion - I'll update soon with proper photos. I'm using Anderson's guidelines for the other masts, so now I'm happy with the main mast the rest should go smoothly. Famous last words.
Thanks Patrick! Looks like I'm on the right track if slightly too tall with my mast - in proportion it seems like it's around the right size. Useful image!
I'd like to say it's probably artistic license. In Anderson's book he does mention that masts were getting shorter throughout the two centuries after the Mary Rose sank, so I suppose they could have been much taller (despite the instability). I've had similar qualms about the length of my bowsprit as the angle is quite extreme as well.
Thanks for the kind words and comments on the last post everybody! I'll be updating very soon with some major mast progress I hope 😁

On this drawing the keel is 15cm.
From keel to first mast top 13,5cm
From keel to second mast top 18cm
total length of main mast, from keel to top 20cm.

Patrick: I'm sure that the builders of Mary Rose didn't have access to laser levels and probably the forecastle was a bit 'off'. You may have had it right the first time!
