reklein reacted to Peter Bloemendaal in US Brig Syren by Peter Bloemendaal - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
Thanks Messis, and also thanks for the likes.
A small update this time. I lashed the long boat and the sweeps down on the gallow bits. I haven't glued them yet. I have a feeling that during the rigging stage it may be handy to temporarily take the long boat off the ship to create some needed space for my hands.
I also added the rudder pendants and added a few rope coils. And the netting is done. The netting was tricky as at one stage I pulled a eye bolt out of the boarding panel (with half the netting in place) and with another section I had to re glue the boarding panel all together. In the end it didn't end up being perfect but I'm happy with the result. I also had a bit of a play placing the anchor ropes.
This completes the hull so it looks like I will make a start on the bowsprit next.
Just a few photo's this time.

Thanks Steve, Jess & Alan and thanks for all the likes.
I managed to fix the steering so the lines now runs around the top of the drum. And the long boat is now completed as well.
I started placing the netting and spent 30 minutes patiently trying to thread a line through below the rigging line and pull it back out (through the netting!!) above the rigging line. After some choice words I went back to the instructions and found out the netting needs to be trimmed prior to lashing it....DOH. It looks like securing the netting is going to take me a while....lol... Very fiddly.
Anyhow, here are a few photo's.

reklein got a reaction from mtaylor in World's oldest intact shipwreck discovered in Black Sea
While its true the viking age was 1100 ad . There are rock carvings in Scandanavia that depict those type of ships as early as 1300 BCE. Its an easy Google search.

Its really interesting to see discoveries such as this. It also makes me realize that this ship is a result of centuries of ship development before this one went to the bottom. Viking ships were depicted on rock carvings dated to 1100 BC. As we say out west "this wasn't their first rodeo".

Yes, these are Bronze Age. Probably skin-boats, but science is not of unified opinion, as no remains have been found yet, as far as I know, There are also Viking-Age petroglyphs of ships, on rune-stones.

1100 BC ? I gather this was a typo and you meant AD ? The Viking period is generally set around the late 8th century to the end of the 11th century, I believe.
These anoxic conditions in the Black Sea led to the preservation of organic materials, just like for the Viking ships in the bogs. It would be difficult, however, to excavate these ships, as they are all below 200 m depth, were you can only access them using submersibles or diving robots - at least with current technology.

If you were asking about the Nonsuch built in 1650 and sailed into Hudson's Bay then yes there are very good plans available. I have a set from the Manitoba Museum where the reproduction is housed in my hometown of Winnipeg, Canada. The plans are 1:24 scale and there are probably 15 or more large, detailed sheets. They must be builders' plans because there are some minor differences between the drawings and the physical ship, so they are not "as-built" plans. I started building a scratchbuilt Nonsuch several years ago in between commissions but then got too busy with other projects and have never been able to get back to it. It is an absolutely beautiful ship!

reklein got a reaction from Canute in What Wood Is Best For What
Red alder is good furniture wood. Tight grained and hard. Also takes stain well. Often used by furniture factories for kit furniture and cheaper things like end tables etc. Pretty hard for model wood but stable. Turns nice and if traeted right can be left on the ground for about 6 months for spalting which gives nice color.

reklein got a reaction from Tigerdvr in Recommended paint pens for detail work?
My grown daughter paints rocks and Posca Brand paint pens are the preferred brand in that hobby. They give a nice sharp fine line. They are then sealed with a clear coat to stand outside weather which probably won't be needed for interior work. I would give wood a clear coat seal before any fine line painting is done.
