Few more details added. Mostly just decals and railings left to do.

    Hello friends,

I had a few free days. Of course I used them to work on my model. The weather here don´t allow something else :-)

As you can see in my pictures I built the stairs to the quarter deck. Again I tried to build everything from wood. Although I know that this is not original. But if you follow my blog you know, that I prefer that way.

The next step was building the fire buckets. It was very difficult to make the logos on them, because they are so small. Even the smallest brush is too big. Finally I used the tip of a metal needle. But the tough and sticky gold color makes it impossible to create a clear logo. I did my best. Hopefully nobody looks too closely on it.

After this I turned to the front and the roundhouses. Here, too, the basic principle was: no paint or sheet! But that means that I had to plank everything  and try to build the bows with my yellow elderberry wood. What do you think about the result? I really like it :-)

Finally I build the two carronades today.

Best wishes and a happy sunday
    :-)

I’m working on cannons again. Being these are more visible I hope to do them justice.

I had this Kit for 22 years, and I didn´t start it because  I never felt confident enough to build a plank on frame kit, and additionally, I had the idea that I got the worse kit available in the market till I saw Y.T Victory in another site.

During the planking process, I would recommend those who are about to start the Mamoli kit to cover these metal gun barrel carriers.
It is too time-consuming to cut that many plank pieces in between the gun ports. Instead, I would recommend attaching the entire plank, covering the gun ports, and then making the openings.

So a little trimming and touch up on the ‘tar’ and I’m about to attach to the bowsprit maybe tomorrow.

I made the rest of the cranes. All were put in place except those based on the rear sides of the funnels. The model almost has taken its shape except some radar masts and smaller details like winches etc. I ended up with the most messed  workbench in the world but in return I got a model of a fine looking vessel

slightly confused during dry fit of top decks--- advice anyone?
The hull is perfectly flat and so are the deck main and stern sections  --yet  the bow kicks up quite a bit it seems far to much for just a bit of sanding-- is it supposed to? I cant work out if it is wrong or right (i suspect wrong lol ). I just need to check the whole deck is supposed to be flat before I take lots of corrective action?

    Good Afternoon Folks
As this part of the build can get a bit tedious for me I thought I would spread it throughout the week, doing a wee bit at a time.

This would then give me my Sunday morning time in the shed listening to the radio to start filling in the hull.

Unfortunately the clocks went back an hour last weekend so by the time I get home its dark.
Makes it less appealing for me to head to the shed after tea. Too comfy in the house.🤗

The styrene tube is only there at the moment so I don't clog up the holes with glue.Giving it a wee twist now and again as the glue dries.

Being a Scotsman I didn't want to throw away the sawdust.🤑It can be mixed with glue and used as a filler when required.

The bow and stern sections will be filled in completely with balsa

    Good Afternoon Folks

Thanks for the "heads up" Captain Slog very much appreciated

Decided to continue with the lower hull rather than continuing with the upper decks framework

I photocopied the frame templates at 196% and glued them to 3mm mdf

I considered removing the horizontal decks but I must have got glue on them as they would not slip out

Now I have to quarter each reduced frame thats eight pieces per frame. Lucky me🤪

Maybe just as well as the deck helps keep the frames squareish.  That should keep me busy for a while
    Thanks for lookin'

I draw all deck planking in CAD form. After several changes to achieve best fit to hull shape, 1:1 scale drawing was transferred to 0,6mm plywood. This is base for final planking.

Finished rudder section . There is a color difference because Hull is not oiled yet.
    I also added Fish plate.

She simply bristled with guns in September of 1945!

The kit comes with a plastic replica of the marker embedded in the deck to commemorate the surrender, but I was lucky enough to pick up a coin in Pearl Harbor when we visited the Mighty Mo' replicating the marker.

Fair winds and following seas, and thanks for checking her out!

Ahhh, mahogany and brass.  But we have to do something about the bridge windows.  As the kit is old, any molded detailing there was practically non-existent and the black band I painted there just won't do.

Some 1/700 decals from an unknown kit off ebay provided much better scale bridge windows and hull numbers.  Not perfect, but again, I liked them.

Finished off the aircraft in late war tri-color scheme by hand, painted anchor chains and deck details, and added her name to the stern.  And rich gold props (old Testors enamel from a bottle).

Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to rotate the middle image, as it was intended to be portrait format.

Just a fun build.  Here the superstructure, catapults and crane have been added.  Probably my favorite and most inspiring part of the kit is the nameplate and stands, with screw holes provided.   The kit just begs for a piece of mahogany and some brass screws!

Not satisfied with the lack of detail below the waterline, I found that the props and rudders from the Italeri 1/720 CVN 71 added some detail that looked good to my eye.

Forgive some of the thrust angles of the props, as I fit them on as best I could.

It was about time to do what I avoided to do lately. To paint the hull.
Body was prepared by sanding it with 400,600 and 1500 grit sandpaper.

For this size of hull an air compressor with a medium pistol would be ideal. Spray cans are far away from appropriate. The museum models are painted with colors from automobile industry therefore looks so impressive even bit unnatural.
Then I layered tape strips and start spraying. The curved rear area was troublesome to tape. This hull also requires 3 colors, white, red and brown.

After finishing the layers it took me another week working on evenings to get the desired outcome. Finally a medium gloss varnish was used.

Santa Claus came and brought me a finished hull. I contribute a bit too.
After 3 bottles of primer the salvaged hull is saved. Its not going to be perfect neither the model will be any away.

After slow progress and piece by piece assembly all sections are into place. I painted white the internal part and grey the upper side. Externally putty was applied at joints then sanded but not primed yet. I need to do some work on the bow. The deck at the anchor area is a bit "fat" and it should be trimmed somehow to meet the slim frame. The bow is also quite sharper on the upper end like the real ship and needs to be aligned with the rest of it. Finally there are some design lines that must be deleted so frame will have a smooth finish like the rest pieces.
