FriedClams reacted to Mahuna in Dunbrody by Mahuna - FINISHED - 1:48 - Cross-Section - Irish Famine Ship
I agree, Tom. I love the simplicity and function of the Skipjacks.
Great, Patrick. I'll save you a seat.
Me too, Popeye.
LOL!! Yes, Druxey - a bow and a stern, and a push boat, and a full rig! I don't think I'll be able to make scale oyster shells, though.

Thanks Bob. I've known about the Irish potato famine for quite a while, but being on the Dunbrody really brought it home to me - so building the model was special for me.
Thanks Rich - looking forward to showing to you when we meet in January.
Thanks Mike. I was able to put a lot of work into the model in a short time. The next project will be somewhat different, but I'm looking forward to it.
Thanks Popeye!
Thanks Brian. The time you and I spent looking at the companion on the Star helped me figure it out.
Now we all want to see you get some more work in on your current modeling projects! See you in January.

Fantastic work Frank. I love that you made the companionway hatches functional, simply amazing job.
Thanks for dropping me the note to kick me into starting to catch up here from my vacation!

FriedClams got a reaction from Piet in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Hello Mark,
Good call on the cradle. Your planking is drop dead beautiful - really accentuates the graceful hull lines. Very nice.

FriedClams got a reaction from cog in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Hello Michael,
Your restoration is coming along wonderfully. Thanks for sharing on the Novus products - l had no idea such a product even existed. Your inventive nature and resourcefulness is exactly what this poor battered ship model needs.

FriedClams reacted to Wintergreen in Francis Pritt by Jim Lad - FINISHED - Scale 1:48 - Australian Mission Ship
Yes, I'm still alive. But no time for modelling or even to follow along all the beautiful logs here. Life, you know... my oldest daughter moved back to our small town and made med grandpa last Feb. Happy days! They live just down the road (1km) from us and I'm so so glad. An adorable girl (aren't they all) named Agnes.

Nice to hear from you, Håkan. Yes, the baggy wrinkle is the 'caterpillars' crawling up the topping lifts and it was to reduce chafe on the sails!

Baggy wrinkle??? But it most be those catepillars crawling their way up the lifts, right?
To minimize shafe on the sails I presume the intention was.
I cant say much else about your build than it looks than it looks picture perfect.
Keep it up John!

Another beautiful model John; she looks great. Particularly nice to see another model that is not mainstream and preserves the history of these vessels.
cheers

Another update on the 'Pritt" - I forgot to take the camera with me the previous week when I went to the museum!
She still staggers slowly towards completion. I didn't get much done last Monday as a Public Holiday combined with a cool, overcast day (non beach weather) meant huge crowds at the museum.
All of the rope coils are now in place. On the photos of the ship they are sometimes seen lashed up in the rigging, but I thought the deck position was a bit tidier for model presentation. The ratlines are iron bars lashed across the shrouds, so these will take a bit of time to do - much easier simply tying thin cord across the shrouds. The mizzen only has the three shown in the photos on each side where the lifebuoys are lashed up - I suspect that they were originally there to lash up the diving outriggers in their stowed position when she was a pearl sheller. The main has ratlines most of the way up, so there's quite a bit of work there.
The next update will be at the end of January as I have other commitments on Mondays over the next couple of weeks that will keep me away from the museum.
Here are some photos of her as she was on Monday afternoon, including a direct overhead shot just for fun.

FriedClams reacted to Mirabell61 in SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse 1897 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - scale 1:144 - POF - first German four stacker of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line
Many thanks Bob, Grant and Piet,....
also thanks to the "likes" for clicking on ...
Bob,
it hapens now and then that the result of a few hours work is disapproved and scrapped, decision do it again, and then the realizing, ran out of appropriate semi-material....., so order new and wait for little parcel to come by post...
Grant,
agree, its quite a tough scale, but due to the chosen total length of the model ( 1380 mm ) I could`nt do it in 1:100 it would been 2 Meters long !
Piet,
I know that feeeling in the fingers....
do you perhaps have something in mind as well (not riped out yet) ?
Nils

Breath-taking Nils! Working at such a tiny scale really does introduce a whole new set of challenges, and you appear to have mastered all of them.

Build log part 51
Update....
the forward boatsdeck ply-sheet is in dry-fit mode, in order to fit the semi-round front part, the slightly raised intermediate podest ( about 5 mm higher than the boats deck, where the boats will be seated), the stairs to the lower bridge level, the positions of the vents, ......
The stair-etch patterns I had were not long enough, so I am making these from longer patterns, ac.. to scale, but that unfortunately does not have rails, so bend and solder from 0,5mm brass wire. The bridge elevation will (not shown here) be reached by an additional upwards pair of stairs....
Nils
longer made stairs
the plank on edge resembles the level of the podest
due to the curvature of the deckhousing roof, the semi round white piece must be glued down later on and secured with two micro screws, that are srewed in here for dry fit already
the pair of face vents will be shortend later on
the support-beams rest on small cut-outs in the two nav-light towers

I hear what you are saying Nils, I wish I had that luxury on the Albertic restoration. I have to sort it out a different way.
Happy new year to you.
