  1. Oh I forgot to ask, are you going to paint the figurehead green? Bligh mentions this but it’s unclear if it was this way when she left or repainted in Tahiti.
  2. Excellent. I think you’ll enjoy it. No build log as of yet, but I may eventually.
  3. If you do happen to get the Danielsson book, let me know what you think. I’ve read most of his works, mostly being anthropological works, fascinating none the less. His Bounty work focuses more on the post mutiny, and I think there are a few errors here and there, but otherwise a fine telling. He’s a little more sympathetic toward Bligh. As for the ballast, she carried her iron ballast in long thin bars. I’ve added a picture below. My piece is much smaller, since I really don’t need a giant hunk of steel! I don’t have a photo at the moment, but I’ll make it a point to take one soon. As I type this, I’m working on my Bounty, small world.
  4. Indeed, I have read that book, and probably every other book on her. One of my favorites is by Bengt Danielsson, who’s name might be familiar, as he was the store master on the Kon-Tiki expedition. It’s translated from its original Swedish so it’s pace can be a tiny bit strange at times, but I still really enjoyed it. I like Bengt Danielsson a lot, his books are great and he was a bit of a personality. One of the last people to come in contact with anyone actually connected to the Pisco Treasure too. Another story, for another time, but a fascinating none the less. I felt PF was a little harsh on Bligh in his book. I have a little sympathy for Bligh as his motivation and his crew’s were completely different. He’s one of those guys, like Shackleton, that wanted to make a name for himself. Better his station. Ambition. Sadly he chose one of the least supported missions for it. I also think he had bipolar disorder, or something along those lines. I don’t think he was the monster PF makes him out to be, but he probably wasn’t pleasant when his mood swung the other way. His mouth was his biggest enemy. On another note, last year I was able to acquire a piece of her iron ballast. I knew that some pieces did exist and I finally wore down the collector. I’m something of a warship artifact collector, and I’d always wanted an artifact from Bounty. I mostly focus on Antarctic exploration items, specializing in items belonging to Shackleton. I still have a few ships on my list, always another Mt. Everest I guess.
  5. Gorgeous! I love the scheme you’ve chosen too. Being a student of Bounty, I don’t think that her scheme was very remarkable at all. While blue is certainly possible, I have a hunch black was probably dominant.
  6. One thing to keep in mind when it comes to Bounty and her paint scheme is this: The Admiralty wasn’t interested in this project at all. When Bethia was taken in hand she was a relatively new ship, however the RN stepped new masts and changed all of her iron hardware to brass. Other changes were made for the greenhouse equipment etc. of course. However the civilian paint scheme was likely not altered. If a repaint was to be done, Bligh would have had to pay for it and he wasn’t exactly swimming in money. Bounty was an armed transport, not a warship, and one being run on a budget.
  7. Bligh and Bounty are two of my favorite subjects excepting Shackleton of course. Such a contradiction he was.
  8. Sorry I missed this post. I was really shocked to learn about the passing of Dr. Grove. He was always one of my favorites.
  9. This sort of thing pops up in the warship research world with unpublished photographs. Years ago, I started collecting photos of Kriegsmarine ships before they somehow became “cool”. I amassed a modest yet important collection of unpublished originals. The cream would be images of Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate. I’ll answer any questions about the photos, but I won’t share them electronically. If an author wanted to see them, they’d have to come to my home and view them in person. In the past I’ve worked on a half-dozen KM book projects as a subject matter expert in one area or another, and none have made the trip. Nowadays, the Kriegsmarine has gone from a subject of genuine interest to something extraordinary cliché. To me at least. I can’t be bothered in most cases anymore and I’ve even considered liquidating my collection of KM photos and artifacts. These days I’m much more interested in the Great War, and the ships built prior. Sadly however, all this stuff costs real money in the end, and letting out into the world for free simply isn’t in the cards for some of us.
  10. Very nice, thank you. I’ll just leave it off
  11. Thanks BE! However, the question is more about where the flag lines would be attached, if the gaff is lowered and lashed to the boom? I doubt I’ll have the ensign on the model, but I would like to make sure the rigging is there. thanks!
  12. Greetings! I’m building a diorama of HM Cutter Alert under easy sail with the mainsail and gaff lowered. I’ve seen some drawings and painting depicting this, and it’s allowing me to not only depict the ship under sail but show off the rigging too. The big mainsail is impressive, but it’s blocking a lot of detail. My question is this: With the main gaff lowered, how would the flag be rigged, if at all? Would it still be connected to the main boom? This seems to be a fairly extreme angle. Or would the storm gaff be rigged and the flag rigging connected there? Thanks for your input! joe
  13. That will be large!
  14. Indeed. This also holds true in scale modeling in that using absolute colors like black or white make the model appear garish. For all my work in 1/700 scale, which I don’t think I’ve shared here, I don’t even own black paint in any form.
  15. Great! I’ll be sure to keep the sails a bit lighter then
  16. Tha is for the replies guys, sounds good to me, flax it is.
  17. Great! Thanks. I was just looking to add a little visual variety to my model. I’ll stick to flax colored sails.
  18. Great! So I’d imagine a sloop like Wasp would have been far too large for this at the time to be conceivable?
  19. Thank you for the response, but maybe I should clarify a bit: Im asking if a color such as this would be possible: Of course this is a much more modern ship but my question is whether this would have been possible. I’m just looking for a little variety for my next project.
  20. Greetings! I’m currently working on USS Wasp (1814) and I was wondering if the sails could have been any other color than the typical linen creamy white/tan? I’ve seen ships with reddish brown sails and I like the look. Of course I don’t want to do anything wildly out of historic context but for variety, it might be interesting. I’ve spent about 2 days reading and searching here and I just can’t find anything on the subject. Best regards, Joe
  21. It would seem that the British had extremely bad luck when it came to magazine detonations. HMS Bulwark, HMS Vanguard, HMS Queen Mary, HMS Indefatigable, HMS Invincible, HMS Hood, HMS Barham. That’s a large number of capital ships. I’m not saying anything other than it was bad luck
  22. You know, I thought the same thing. A battleship vs aliens was just fun! Especially where they powerslide the darn thing.
  23. What a beautiful model! I find these early 20th century liners to be great subjects. The Germans always had an eye for liner design and it seemed they always pushed the evolution forward. From Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse to Bremen and Europa. Personally, I feel that Bremen and Europa, as built, were the best looking liners of the 20th century. Not my favorite ships, but they did look amazing considering what the Germans had to work with. Anyway, this is a gorgeous model, I love every bit of it!
  24. Greetings, I'll keep this short, between the Corel 1/130 solid hull Bounty and the 1/135 Mini Mamoli Bounty, which would you choose? I'm having a tough time finding anything much about the Corel offering. To my eyes, the Corel ship seems to be a bit more detailed. Thanks guys, I look forward to hearing your opinions. Joe
