Tim Curtis got a reaction from Old Collingwood in SMS Koenig by Tim Curtis - FINISHED - ICM - 1:700 - PLASTIC - with Flyhawk deck and PE
Nearly finished on this one.
Just a little bit of rigging thread left to add. And a some flags.
And a few extra details...
I find working at 1/700 scale very very difficult. Particularly anything involving paint.
But if you put the model in a nice box...it seems to look ok!
Will post some better quality photos when the model is finished.

Here is a very belated update.
I have been quietly plodding along with this...while converting my garage into a studio office.
Not much to say. The photos speak for themselves I think.
Just dry fit at the moment.
I am no master at working at this scale, but I thoroughly enjoy its minutiae.

I have started the hull and rear deck area.
Dry fits together well.
What I REALLY like is the laser etched wooden deck.
It is stunningly thin. It took me a while to realise it actually has some backing paper that you peel off and then just stick the thing done.
It's pretty fragile and you need to be careful about getting positioning just right, and also don't get your tweezers stuck to the back.
But in about 5 mins you have this microscopically detailed Ultra thin deck planking in place. I reckon it's about 0.1 to 0.2mm thick.
Result is very pleasing. See below.
What you need to remember is this is 1:700 scale. The whole hull is about 25cm or 10" long.

I was not going to do a build log for this kit. But having started it a couple of days ago, I am so impressed by it that I thought I would do a basic log.
Plastic parts are made by ICM models (a Ukrainian company). Flyhawk has then added 5 PE frets, lots of additional tiny turned brass details, and some Uschi rigging thread. All for under AUD$100 ($68 US).
Below are some detailed photos of the box and what's in it.
I took these after having started the model so there are a few parts of the rear deck and hull that I have painted and glued together.

I feel like this kit is crying out to be made into a diorama...
Like some of Justin Camarata's...see photo below!

Another small step, ship's bell and all the windlass gear:
Positioned on the deck, for now dry-fitted only to make a photo. Will be removed and glued later, to avoid damages, while working on deck structures:
Now I will make a short pause - have to focus on completely different "project" - one diatonic accordion is waiting to be tuned, let's see how it goes... See you later.

Yes, that would be interesting - Justin is a good friend of mine. However, my purpose is to make a display model for our gallery. It will have a water base, but not a real diorama.

Small update:
Sanded the Hull a bit more and decided before the Putty/Primer I'll need to have a think about it and ask myself is it ready for this or does more work need to be done?
I gave the Anchor Hawse holes a bit of shape internally from the Deck down to the Resin piece. (The Deck Hawse hole pieces are beveled around the edges.)
Decided to have a go at the Main Gun Turrets.
There are eight magazine issues for the four turrets, four for the ply structure and four for the PE. (The issue instructions are identical.)
(I have taken photos of the Frets, one Turret structure in ply and one with PE fret added.)
So, the ply structures go together very nicely but when it comes to PE, I have a very steep learning curve....🙂
I got the PE on the first Turret after a few hours of planning/dry fitting.
I hope that the other Turrets won't be so difficult as I now know how the pieces line up....
The completed Turret photo shows a bit of filler in a few of the joins. (I'll use some very fine Wet and Dry and a fine Wire Brush to clean this up.)
There are Ventilators, Hatches, Ladders, etc. still to be added, these are on different frets in other issues....
(At least it's a bit of progress and something out of my comfort zone. (PE)
Cheers....HOF.

Doris,
Once again, I am lost for words. Your work is so far beyond what most of us can achieve. In english I would say you are a National Treasure...they should give your work a museum of its own.

Oh my goodness. Just amazing.
Your skill as a bas-relief sculptor at minute scale is unique.
There cannot be many people in the world who can do what you do.
I watch in awe.
Hope your troubled times don't last too long. I pray for you.

Tim Curtis reacted to markjay in Jefferson Davis Bluejacket
I've built several of Bluejackets models, very satisfied with the results, but they were solid hulls. I can not find any build logs for the Jefferson Davis which is plank on frame. Has anyone out there had experience with this kit?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Full set of various bitts and cleats added, as well as samson post, bowsprit, hawse rims, rudder.
The hull and the base were sprayed with matt Lord Nelson lacquer for wooden ship models. Via this I dimmed the glossy look of the danish oil that I have found somewhat disturbing. This shall be the final outer look of her.
Well, this is the current status of the project. Lot of work still to do. I still must recall, whether I did not omitted something, that would be problematic to add. Hopefully not 🤔 (yes, I had to make the completely new bowsprit. In the first version I forgot to keep the square profile at the samson post and later totally screwed the piece by foolish varnishing attempt - happens).
The project progress I have presented so far covers the whole year of activity. Not too much I know, and from now on the build log will be written in 'real-time' manner, thus even slower. Never mind, I believe it will eventually be finished also with the help from the community here. See you then.
