I finished planking the centre part of the deck.

And I used this photo to make the mast foot...

Because the caulking between these planks is very wide, I used 0,4 mm thin walnut strips for this.
After all...the walnut tree nails I'll use on the deck are not tree nails, but is also caulking, so it does match.

The wider/heavier planks (Dutch: schaarstokken) next to the centre part shown here also...not in place...just to show them.
I painted the sides of the deck planks with dark smoke brown (Vallejo 70.939).

Tree nailing this part of the deck is next...I hope I can nail this (lol), it can make or break the look of the deck. Very scary job!

    More soon,

    I love this CA applicator...

you can pin point tiny drops with it. Clean with a lighter and fine sandpaper...will last.

I either use that thin applicator nossle, or a tooth pick with a blob of glue on a card.

Nice work Robin. You can try out the look of treenailing applying dots with a soft pencil - you'll set the positions for your nails at the same time ... if it is not to your liking you only have to remove the pencil marks ...

2 hours for 1 paravane boom! One thing I cant seem to control is being sloppy with glue. I hope painting hides the sloppy CA glue everywhere. But i don't think I will ever be able to be as neat as people on this site. I don't know how they do it!

Thank you Jan, i just got book of R.Morton Nance. A lot of nice pictures there, i hope to use some i ideas. Now working on the back of the ship, placing ornaments, which necessary for planking. I dont know what do do with keel, its edge is not covered with wood, i might place some spare plank on it later. Few photos.

    And the grating...

Made of 1x1mm walnut strips. This also helps me with the "no staining policy".
    A dry fit...

I think I'll somewhat reduce the width of the cap planks...a tad bit too massive to my liking now.

    More soon, planking the deck.

Might usually be true, but this is how it looks on the replica ship. I didn't study 1595 gratings used on a Dutch pinas, so it can be wrong.

    Now busy with the planking...

Before someone says the planks near the mast are not staggered, that's because this part will be covered with mast foot planks.
This is the part in between the schaarstokken (translation?). I use wider planks for them.
I'll tree nail the deck with 0,5 mm walnut (the planks are 4 mm wide).

Since work will become increasingly busy until the end of the year...I'll be happy when I get the deck done this year...and perhaps finish the balsa.

More soon, but it will slow down on my shipyard.

Is there a grating expert in da house?

I already sand the top layer down to approx 0,5 mm...will sand it to half that thickness.
The Batavia grating is remarkably close to what the Duyfken builders did. Frugal Dutch not so fancy gratings.

I rather call it shading instead of weathering and I think it looks really good. The details show nicely and that's where this is good for.

Weathering on the other hand...paint damage, rust, rust streaks, dirt, smoke, grime...that's a very tough job to get it right.
More often then not it ruins an otherwise fantastic build.

    Imho...you do fine!

What you can do after filling the gap with the missing bit...or scrap sheet.... You can use a small lick of acrylic paint to fill a remaining gap.
sand smooth with 1000 or 1200 grit sandpaper...repeat this a few times when needed.

    You can fix this!

lead pencil paint chipping on a 1/72 Biber midget sub.
I don't think this will look ok on a 1/200 Bismarck...sailors would get punished for not maintaining their ship when this kind of paint damage shows.

    Oh...shut up! It looks great!

About the use of a pencil...can look great to apply paint chipping on larger scale models, but I won't recomment it to use that on a 1/200 Bismarck.
On a 1/72 scale type VII U-boot after a tour (just to name something)....yes! but not on a well maintained battleship.

    This looks very interesting

Dozens of perfectly preserved ancient shipwrecks have been found at the bottom of the Black Sea.
A total of 60 wrecks were discovered dating back as far as 2,500 years, including galleys from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

Thanks for the thought, Tim. At this stage, I feel like I've put a good amount of work in to get the hull to where it is and I'm going to try and press forward with making the adjustments to make what I have first.

I'm often the first to push back on the customer service side of things but I feel like half the allure of this new hobby is to try and figure out how to work with what you have to get to the end result you're working towards so hopefully I can make this work...
