    Jay,
I can only echo MrRiddoch's words.
Your work is going to live on and be of extreme value for others such as myself.

    Thanks Bob.
I am glad the videos are of interest to some of you. But, in a way, I have put them together for my own benefit. I find that by doing this slowly in front of this little camera, I concentrate on doing it right and learn in the process. Then when I edit the clips I find more details I need to improve. In the case of this belaying video I also met some nice folks who could show me how they do it on a small but real ship.

Just a quick update.  The first belt of planking below the wales has been completed P/S.

Not bad so far and hopefully sanding will bring everything in line.  There will be a molding running across where the counter meets the planks in the stern.  Open framework amidships is starting to look nice!

Moving on now to the lower most belt starting with the garboard plank and heading up.  Holding off on stealers and drop planks until the final belt.   Will be trying some 3/16" planks, tapered, for the stern (everything else is 1/8).

Those coils look great, Jay.  Very realistic.  They would not be perfect on the real ship either.

Western Union cable ship Robert C. Clowry from 1910 to 1924. Sold to rum runners who painted "Western Union" in large letters on the superstructure which led to Western Union being accused of bootlegging. Sold and renamed in 1926 and again in 1930. Scrapped in 1938.

Since this is still my log, I would like to add another 'trial'. It is my first attempt to include some coiled rope on the belaying pins. This is along the bottom of the mizzen mast and along my 'bad side'; the port, where I make my first trial runs.

I mentioned making coils before, but now I want to see what I can do with them. They are pre-made, not perfect, but so is life aboard.

I am procrastinating with tackling the main mast shrouds, I know.

I do a bit of an 'eyeball' bevel Popeye.  Nothing sophisticated.  I think you're right  about shrinkage.....depends on the wood.  Some day I'm going to build a double planked hull !!  As always, sandpaper is our best friend.

as soon as I am over my jetlag I ll be working on her again

this last month has been very difficult for me

half December I had to go back to Belgium as my father was in hospital
in the 2 weeks I had to move his belongings from the flat he lived in to a room in a nursing home as he would not be able to look after himself any more

when I left him to go back home (on new years eve) he was getting a bit better and was supposed to be able to get out of hospital soon

not even a week after I was back in Oz I got the message that he had taken a turn for the worse
before I could fly back he had already passed away on January 7

although it was a sad time I have also renewed ties with family in my home country and will be able to stay in contact with them

I now have 2 more weeks of holidays in which I hope to recover and my building time will help with this

please don't leave any comments on here about this as I will remove it later on. I just want to let my friends on here know and understand why I ll be a bit quiet for awhile

    thank you

Those "ramin" strips in the kits may or may not be true ramin.  Some of the kit makers have used a wood different from what they call it.

I agree with Jim, Craig. The kit contents list should tell you how many stock strips of each dimesion, which is what you need to check for inventory. When it comes to cutting smaller pieces, always use the shortest available stock of that dimension and wood type that will do the job. That should ensure that you don't run out.

    Hi Craig,

Not sure what anyone else would do but I just sort by dimension, assuming there will be enough.  Have yet to experience a shortage even with some of my sloppy practices.  I do take extra care with the odd 1 or so pieces that only are used for a single item or two; normally the bigger dimension stuff.
My practice is to sort and separate by eye after establishing the dimension and then using a little tag to identify each group.
    Hope that helps!

    Cheers,

    Jim

Still slowly working away. The second boom truss is proving a bit more tedious than the first as I have to triple check all measurements against each other as well as the completed side. When I get closer to completing the second truss I'll post some photos.

    Hi Craig,

Congrats on starting your first build log. I'm sure you'll get plenty of help and advice with this one as there are a few of these being built here.

I'm always interested in watching a paddle steamer come together - one of these is on my "one day" list - so I'll follow along for the ride.

Jim, would you pass the popcorn please?

    Handrails fitted.

And started installing pillars and railings, that's not a fun job     another 60 to go

Thank you for putting this in proper perspective. In my opinion; we, modelers and hobby wood workers, should be careful, but not get overly concerned when making 'saw dust' so once in a while.

While making furniture I have made oak dust numerous times, breathed it (never eaten oak), and I also know that other chemicals I have used may cause the dreaded disease. Now I do wear a simple dust mask (as well as having a dust collector on my sander). But it is not something I get overly concerned about.
Age 77 next month and going for 100.

    This is a small update.

I have lately not much built on the mississippi because I'm simultaneously build the HMS Victory Mantua.
I will now continue with the railings on the Mississippi, once there is some progress, I will post some photos

I know this is a build log for my ship, but I would like to post one photo as a mini tribute to him - my favourite photo of him:

The handle of the pump is created from two strips of 2mm x 2mm square walnut sanded and etched out. They are based in 3mm x 3mm square walnut strips sanded to fit the side of the pump.

The pieces all put together initially and then stained.

The pump mechanism and the strips around the pump are made from a scrap brass dowel and scrap brass flattened pieces.  I flatten the end of the brass dowel out by putting it between the flat areas of a pair of pliers and striking it with a hammer.

All of the strips, the handle, and the pump mechanism are attached using a touch of glue, and then firmly attached using pins with the heads sanded down. Finally the pumps are re-stained, and the brass pieces are given a layer of patina.

    Time for a small update.

The treenailing of the upper hull is completed.  I used the 'drill and fill' method using a #74 bit and wood filler that I dyed with acrylic paint to the color I liked.  It's not as aggressive a pattern as specified on the plans but it suits me.  Once that was done, another coat of diluted Minwax Golden Oak stain was applied and everything given 2 coats of WOP followed by an application of brush on Testor's Flat Acrylic.

Now it's time to finish the painting on the upper hull.  Everything from approx. 2 strakes above the gun ports up to the rail will be black.  Wish I had a scale roller  .  Probably take about 8 coats.

    Be back soon.
