    Post Sixty-three
Guns, guns, and more damned guns.
Busy days down at the Gunwharf with production in full swing.

    1698

    1707
    1703
The guns were given a further coat of Vallejo black to ensure that none of the unwanted striations showed through.

    1705

    1725
Chris  was thoughtful enough to include a spare carriage set, and a number of spare wheels and other bits  to cater for any mishaps.
Just as well, in my case a couple of wheels did ping off into the ether during over enthusiastic de-charring, never to be seen again.

    1728
At last, all but two guns more or less finished.
The casting of two of the guns failed, and replacements are hopefully en-route from the Foundry.

Still some tidying up to do, before a trial fit aboard Indy.

Speed definitely doesn't equal poor work in your case Dan. It looks superb.

You are very organised! For the cannons have a look at my Fly log or Blue Ensign's Pegasus log. Mine were from RB. For the swivels I used Syren. There are many more alternatives out there these days with 3D printing coming on stream...but the RB version is just fine in my opinion. The kit supplied versions are a shocker.

    Hi Bob
This is a great kit designed by Chris Watton I believe. Since it was produced things have changed. The cannons are not up to scratch but these are details. Heaps of logs for Pegasus here, but "Blue Ensign" is the definitive one that I'd refer to.

As said, it is a brilliant kit and even without incidental upgrades it will turn into a beauty - upgrade the cannons though - the kit ones supplied are shockingly bad. Blue Ensign's and my Fly log give you advice on that.

Enjoy the build - a great kit choice!

    Hi Dave
I wouldn't normally post a photo on another persons log - feel free to ask me to delete it - but the one below isn't in my log - there is one of the stern there. It is a long time ago since I did this coppering exercise. There was trimming and, perhaps, some tiny overlaps? You can see in the photo where the top line of rivets might will have been trimmed and more severe trimming as the curve rises. i always trimmed the top of the plate not the bottom, otherwise the flow heads in the wrong way. I installed the top PVC trim at the waterline first to work up from the keel towards it, keeping the plate curves gently rising at the stem and stern. With copper tape you can trim to the waterline later but with plates I think that'd be very difficult if not impossible. In my original log someone suggested that the plates should start parallel to the waterline and then work down. This is completely wrong - parallel to the keel and then work up, keeping that rising curve going. Don't leave gaps - trim using the rivet lines as a guide. Overall my outcome is not as smooth as sanded planking but is smooth enough that it looks to eye to be completely smooth. Hope that helps?...

    Finishing the Gun Barrels

Decided to finish the brass barrels.  I wanted a variation from the straight black finish of the smaller guns.

Primed brass with Krylon Maxx Grey Primer right out of the rattle can, quick short bursts.

Color finish applied with Paasche Talon, #2 tip, air pressure 15 psi. Vallejo Model Air paint, Black 71.057, 15 drops in the cup, then 1 drop Gunmetal 71.072, and stir well.  Finish with thin coats of Valejo Matt Varnish.

In antipodean parlance we'd call this: 'Done like a dog's dinner.' Or perhaps the UK shares that phrase?

Well, thank you Gentlemen, with such advice from my fellow modellers, including Chris who designed and supplied the makings, I feel I must accept.
Mrs W has also added her vote for an unadorned hull.
So, the hull will be left au naturel.
Thanks again for helping me to resolve this issue, the decision to copper is a lot easier to make when the eye is less than satisfied with the planking.
I still quite like the coppered look and there are  good examples of  'Indy' builds using  both tape and plate  to inform any decision, but as has been said, a plain hull perhaps better suits a Navy Board style.
As it happens the colour of the Pearwood is very close to that of a tarnished copper penny.
I will invert the hull to apply a final coat of w-o-p, and then get on with it.
    Cheers,

My vote is don't copper. The planking is just too good to be covered. But, you are masterful enough for either to look fantastic.

Today I installed the false gun deck. She begins to look more and more as a ship

Cool little detail in the design were small cutouts at the base of the bulkhead tabs, where you could slide the deck in.
This would hold the deck in place at the outside edge, so you only have to put some nails at the centerline of the deck to keep holding down
and "paint" some glue underneath. In this way the curve of the deck is easily obtained. Bit difficult to see on the photo, but I hope you get the idea

Next were the vertical gunport frames. Great care is needed to install these, because they have some thin parts that could break if you push to hard. And the fit
in the slots were pretty tight. I used a scrap piece of strip wood to push them in the slots of the horizontal frames. This dispersed the forces a bit. This went without
    problems.

    Hi Dan
This is looking great! Every time I see this ship I like it more.

For breeching ropes I use 0.6mm Morope which feels about right to me.
For accelerating the aging of copper I use a radical technique, which you can see in my Fly log, but there are other ways of doing it which might be more pleasant...
