    Hello Amateur,
Sorry to be so late to the show. Thank you for explaining the difference between Witsen's book and Van Yk's book.
You say that the vagueness of Van Yk is the reason why less models are based on Van Yk's book than on Witsen's book. But don't you think the main reason why more models are are build from Witsen's book is the fact that Van Yk's book does not contain technical drawings while Witsen's book contains a lot of technical drawings?
This technical drawing of the pleasure vessel, for example:

inspired the Scheepvaartmuseum to build a model in 1970, and Ab Hoving to build a model in the 1980's (Scheepshistorie 16).

And the technical drawing of the 'Egmonder pinck' (at the top):

inspired several modelers, like Nic Molenaar and Cor Emke, to build models of a 'pink' (Scheepshistorie 2 & 3).

Without Witsen's drawings it would have been much harder to build a good model, don't you think?

    Jules

Thanks to Ab for all the links and explanations.
As I looked at the plans, I know I will need a lot of advice.

Hm, my annual watching can't be compared to this.
I redrawn the ribs and keel and had them fired on a laser. Unfortunately she came a little broken ...

    Finished !

I've added the anchors and flags and believe I'm going to call it finished. There is some minor detail work that I may come back to later but right now I think I'm going to leave it be and see how I like the way it looks. I've ordered a display case and will post one more set of pictures when I have it placed in that.

Couple comments looking back on this build. Firstly the quality of the kit and honestly I don't think you could ask for more. The quality of the materials and instructions is first rate and is something that someone who hadn't completed a build previously can tackle and get great results, so I'm going to rate that a 10/10. As for my build there is some good, some bad and probably hundreds of mistakes that experienced builder will spot immediately but I'm ok with that and am just considering it part of the learning experience which will be applied to my next build (already out of the closet and the box is sitting on my table staring at me) so I'll rate my build as a 6/10, I'm happy with the final product but it could be made even more beautiful if one desired. Speaking of mistakes I'd really like to thank the people that have been so helpful with information, I may not have gone back and corrected all of them but at least I know now what I did wrong and can improve in the future.

This has been an incredibly enjoyable process and I'm excited to start the next kit. One of the things I really enjoy about the hobby is that it's so varied, just when it seems like you've done a ton of something then something completely different will come along and you'll be doing that for a while. It's also given me even more appreciation of the amazing work I see here on the build logs and I'm so thankful that people share their experiences and help beginners like me tackle the more challenging part without having to invent the wheel from scratch.

Finally got around to mounting the deadeyes to those hull structures that I have no name for.

I have to admit that I've been dragging my feet on this step, as "rigging" has kind of fallen out of favor with me. Not good for a modeler of sailing ship! Probably more of a phase. I tend to get into whatever type of work I happen to be doing and don't take well to shifting gears these days. And, I guess I particularly like hull construction, deck planking, and probably research most of all.

But, it was time to get back to the Cog after a general break from most everything fun these past couple months.

    So, deadeyes now in place...

As I was working with these, I realized there were notches at the top of these structures (see arrow in the photo below)... was something missing? I looked at the instructions, which didn't show me to add stringers here, like the others below, but in a latter photo in the instructions, the pieces magically appeared!

I managed to add those pieces, and of course the little deck and the supports you see above.

Then, looking forward, I noticed how these assemblies were fit into place, and it suddenly became apparently, that I had no idea if these little decks would fit into place correctly. Looking closely at the instruction photos, it looked like I might have them wrong. I ended cutting these little decks off, deciding it was much smarter to mount them AFTER the assemblies were fixed in place.

NOW, it's safe to add those decks so that they fit right up against that deck cabin bulkhead.

    Well, anyway, it's progress!

After looking in on Chuck Seiler's Wütender Hund builds in card and wood, I'm inspired to get my own cog project completed.

But, I had one of those bewildering moments today regarding this project that's making me question my sanity...

You might have noticed that there is still a big opening in the center of the deck. Way back in the build, around the time the deck was laid, there was supposed to be a coaming put in place around this opening, just forward of the mast.

Now, I skipped this step for a long time because I was sure I made the coaming and misplaced it. I finally figured I must have accidentally put it into a stack of things to throw out. 🤨

For the longest time, I had resigned myself to the idea that I'd have to make a new coaming from scratch.

So, today, I was back to working on the model, which is pretty close to completion, so the number of parts remaining on the sheets is dwindling. Then, I noticed some parts on the sheets that seemed curious. I looked for them in the instructions and, lo and behold, here were the parts for the hatch coaming!

It seems that I never actually did construct it. My recollection was completely wrong. I can't imagine how I could have ever thought I'd lost something I never built. Apparently, I'm losing my mind!

Well, I finally put the parts together, and now have a completed hatch coaming on deck.

I don't think I've recovered my sanity, and I may not any time soon, but at least my model is one step closer to completion.

    Hi Allan,
in 2003 I was in Stockholm visiting the Vasa museum.
I was in contact with Hans Soop, the author of several books on the sculptures and figure decoration of Vasa. He invited me and introduced me to the director of the museum, who gave me unrestricted access to the ship. I could move around the ship freely all day and that was an absolute privilege at the time.
I had many interesting conversations with the people from the Vasa Museum and I also learned something about taring the rigging.
I did a little round trip with a friend through the Nordic countries like Sweden and Denmark and we stopped in many coastal towns to see the maritime museums there and talked to the people.
It was in a small fishing village in Sweden, I can't remember the name, that I noticed a boat builder who was still tarring his ropes as in old times. At that time, he told me the recipe with which the original "Stockholm Tar" was made and still is. He gave me an old tin of his mixture, about 250 ml, which I brought home with me.
I also visited the original rope factory in Roskilde in Denmark, which made the cordage for the Viking ships. There, too, they showed me how the tar is made.
When I started to work intensively with cordage and its production more than 10 years ago, I also made my first experiments with tar. I learned how to refine the recipe so that it could be used for model ropes to dye dark and light ropes. It took a few tries, but the result is so authentic that by now I only use original linen yarn and genuine Stockholm tar.
Of course, the production of such cordage is complex costly and time-consuming. But the result is extraordinary. I made the rope in the photos more than seven years ago and it has not changed in colour. It is a real cable, four-stranded with a core, for a stay or a shroud.
There is only one dealer in Europe who imports original charcoal tar "Stockholm Tar". But you can hardly work with tar alone. It has to be specially diluted and mixed with other substances so that it can be used. So it needs a special recipe. The rope must also be treated with it in various stages of production. Just dipping the finished rope into the tar does not bring success.
The production of such ropes is really extremely complex and hardly anyone wants to do so. In any case, I think it is worth it, because the modellers of the time also worked with natural dyeing and preservation methods.

I know it's a bit unusual, but I use real linen yarn and make my ropes on a specially designed machine. I dye my ropes exactly the way it was done back then, with real Stockholm tar.
The following photos are just an example of how well this works and how real it looks.

Hello everybody, thank you very much for your messages and all my apologies for not being active the last couple of month... I just discovered the warm PM you sent me and I'm really ashamed...
The build has gone very little forward because it's a quite long work to do the carvings, and something I told  would never happen again has happened... I'm a father of a little baby girl born 08.22.20 ! Of course it made me busy quite a lot, and I can at last go back to the workshop. As you know the pandemic make my job more tricky but hopefully I'm not working in a hospital so I'm fine.
Thank you all for the kind words, I'm really sorry I did'nt see them earlier...
I hope everyone is alright, take care,
    Marc

Thank you Victor ! I didn't know about it, I will try !
Work on the Soleil Royal goes on, this time I shoudn't disapear for a few months... well, I hope !
I'm working on the decorative parts of the third deck, much time to adjust these small elements... But the result is there, it's quite good looking. The boxwood parts are 0,5mm, and they are made round on there edges. (sometimes I struggle with english language to exprim simple ideas !! 😅)

    Hi all !
Marc, for the quarter galleries I have no precise plan yet, but I think I will make a quite elaborate form with balsa wood as a draft to study the volumes. Then I will build the stern and the galleries the way it's meant to be, building the frame then planking and then adding the ornaments.
I finally made a last correction on the sheer cap railings, wich on reflection I found a bit too stiff and straight. I remade the last level and gave a bit more plunging; it's only 2mm but it makes a difference. So I post the same views as before for a comparison. For the susbandes I resigned myself to use what Alexey Baranov had graciously sent me at the time. It's not bad, and for what will be seen it will do the job. For the guns of the upper decks I will do them by myself but for the first two decks it will save me considerable time. I also post again a pic of the carpenter, I love this little guy. It puts a touch of colour, of life, it pops much more than my little wooden Tourville. It immediatly give a good idea of the size of the ship !
