Derek C reacted to Tom E in US Brig Niagara by Tom E - Model Shipways - 1:64 Scale
Evening,
Hope all is well in everyone's shipyard tonight.
Quiet, and cold, night here in central New Hampshire on a Saturday.
Good movie on, hot cup of tea, and heading to the Shipyard!
Moving on from the main rail as it vexes me right now!
Installed extra fillers at the bow and stern.
The fillers looked "pieced" in.
Went to Michaels to buy some balsa wood blocks I had seen previous.
Lo and behold, they were gone!
There must be another modeler in town, those were pretty sweet blocks/slabs of balsa wood!
I knew I should have nabbed em when I had the chance!
In my frustration, at myself, walked thru the "wood/carving" area and found little blocks, I think there used to make building blocks for kids.
I little shaping and they fit. In the end, they are covered over anyways.
As you can see below, there's still some fairing to do to the fillers.
A bit uneven!
With these now installed, and checking fairing with the batten strip, you get a real feel at how well these things are going to give an extra grip while planking.
Already convinced on extra fillers and will use on any future builds where they can be used.
I'm still in awe at my keel.
She is staying straight during this entire process.
And that's with me pulling and screwing with the main rail, and several strong solvents to loosen glue, she stays straight.

Derek C reacted to Blue Ensign in 18th Century English Longboat by Blue Ensign - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48 Scale
A two month project Completed.
Grapnel.
The kit provides a soft white metal boat grapnel which at first look seemed somewhat over-scale, particularly in the spread of the claws.
Checking against Steel ;
A 112lb boat grapnel had a shank length of 3'with length of claws ½ the length of the shank. This equates to scale lengths of 19mm and 9.5mm, pretty much spot on for the provided grapnel, altho' this relates to largest size of grapnel.
Even so the curve of the claws seems less pronounced than the version shown in the Medway Long-boat, and therefore takes up more room.
As with the Pinnace version I added a ring thro' which a 300mm length of 0.63mm Ø line was attached with a Fisherman's Bend.
Boat Hook
Not provided in the kit, but at least one would have been provided as basic boat equipment.
2777
As with the Pinnace version I knocked one up from a soft metal hairgrip and a length of Boxwood square stock.
Completion photo's.

I have now made both of the Model Shipways 18th c boats, and there is a lot of modelling to be had from these two little modestly priced kits and fine little models to be had as a result.

They are also excellent for skill honing particularly in terms of single plank hull planking, and simple ironwork fabrication.
It helps if you can replace some of the rather poor Limewood strips and use Syren replacement rigging line and blocks etc. which the kits really deserve.
My thanks once again to Chuck for making this possible and I look forward to the issue of his latest small boat offering.

Shaping and installing the risers was a tricky task. I matched the curve of the third strake down from the shear fairly close. More time was spent creating a symmetrical pair.
Now I can add some paint and begin some small structural modifications. I'm inspired by the below example provided by Chuck to our fellow member in his build. Shown below.

I decided to put in the nuts to mount the keel assembly to my build board .
first I ground down two sides of the nuts, using my dermal
Then I clamp the false keel and keel together in the vise and drilled through the false keel , and approximately half way into the keel .
using a 11 blade and files I cut out the recessed notch in the keel for the nuts to fit in flush
I then added glue to the keel and applied the false keel to the keel covering the recessed nuts I used a couple of screws to assure alignment and clamped it all together to dry.
thanks for for looking in

Frames look nice so far. Sometimes I think our primary hobby is sanding with a little ship modeling thrown in now and then.

Derek C reacted to Chuck in Serv-O-Matic as art?
That does look wonderful. Great job putting it together. I hope you have a lot of fun with it. I do agree with what you said as well. These tools should be fun to use and hopefully fun and interesting to look at.
I am using the same style on my "Syren Rope-Rocket". I just finished up some retooling of the design and have been subjecting it to rigorous testing for the last week or so. I am hopeful that I will be able to get this on my site for sale by the end of the year. I didnt bother cleaning the laser char off it but I should have in hindsight. But this one was really the prototype to abuse for a few weeks.
This latest version is all cherry as well and will handle 3 strand and four strand rope. You just need to switch out the wheel on the one end and switch and move the smaller gears on the other end to change the configuration. This is easy to do and just requires the loosening of a set screw. It was important to me that it look FUN to use.....but it also has to work well....which it has. This particular rope walk has already made more rope than the usual model builder will make in ten years. I will let everyone know when its available.

Derek C reacted to austristan in Revenue Cutter by austristan - BlueJacket Shipcrafters - Scale 1:48 - First build
Still making gradual progress on the hull but decided to change it up a little bit and knock out the first piece of deck furniture. Parts were very easy to work with and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Cut one of the side moldings a hair short but was able to add a tiny shim to fill the gap and, once painted, couldn't even tell I'd made a mistake.

Hello Fellow MSW Members
I am going to attempt the Cross Section for my next build , this will be my third wooden boat model .So with that being said , don’t expect a master piece as I am a true novice. It took me a week at least to try and figure out what wood and how much to purchase . I am sure I probably purchased more than needed but I figure what I don’t use on this build , I will someday on another I’m sure and to be honest some of what I ordered I didn’t plan on ordering but once I got on the site and started ordering, I couldn’t help it.
Here is what I ordered:
while I wait for my wood to arrive I have some teak and figured I’d play around and try my hand at building a cannon as I have never done one before .
First I used a flashlight to trace the parts for the cannon, because I only printed on set and ran out of ink (well at least that’s what it’s telling me ,but seems like I just replaced the darn thing ) and didn’t feel like running to the store and I couldn’t talk the admiral into going.
i placed the print down on the lens of the flashlight and put a piece of card stock over it and used a colored pencil to trace the plan, I use a color pencil to be able to see that I didn’t miss anything. With black ink or pencil the image and pencil lines make it hard to see.
i then used exacto knife to cut out template.
using a a small amount of glue I glued the templates to a piece of teak I had already previously prepared to the proper thickness.
Using the scroll saw I cut out the templates in a general shape.
I then used files, sanding blocks, and sticks to finish
Then I cut out some bits to make the front and rear axle spindals
that’s where I’m at for the day .I will continue to work on the cannons while I patiently wait for my wood order .
I hope y’all will follow along on this adventure and help me out along the way
Thanks
Derek

Derek C reacted to William-Victory in A better modeling experience
I found this site through someone playing Naval Action. Promising game.
I found an old Heller kit at an estate sale for $50.
So I'm in year three of my build. Taking time not to get burned out.
I lost a lot of my photos from the beginning. I'll deposit what I can here for suggestions and comments.

As we say in here at MSW, this is no race...... three years are nothing.
And a big welcome to you!
