Here is today's ......limited....progress.  Not much but once again it is progress.  My time in the shipyard has been torn between life and yard.....Strange, we went from 17 F day before yesterday, and last afternoon I was grilling on the deck.  Today in the 60's....go figure.....So anyways, here are pictures of what got done today.  A little more work on the masts, and I got the anchors hung.  These anchors will be changed soon.  When I bought my kit, the one thing the guy did was to glue and paint the anchors, and glue and paint the cauldrons for the Tryworks.  No idea why....so, I have ordered more anchors from MS, however they are out of stock.  So I went ahead and hung them off and all I will need to do is undo 1 brass ring to replace them.  I want to have the anchor in Brittania, and the anchor stocks in wood.  So once recieved I'll be changing these out......

Wow, those little strippers worked really good.  Those kind of tools would really be handy for a lot of things.  Very good Augie......geez what you can do with a mill.....I know they came with it, but you could make some too.....looks good....

With the 300 hour mark just passed, thought I'd update with her new look:

Work on the upper hull is completed (for the moment) with the painting up to the rails.  Same process as the wales.

Now, there are some moldings that will be attached later on.  Toward that end, some scrapers are provided with the kit to put a bead in the 1/16" square basswood moldings:

I was a little pessimistic about this process at first.  But here's a sample of four strips treated with the scrapers then stained:

Looks like these will actually work !!  I'll hold off installing them for now so as not to damage them during the next step.....

    ............. planking the lower hull.

Need to do a little reading and planning before I begin.  This is NOT my strong suit  --- but then little falls into that category.  For this hull, Chuck has included a 'spiling jig' to do some edge bending so I need to work with that for a bit.  So it'll be a while.........

But I shall be watching everyone's progress

    So STAY THE COURSE !

Thanks, Wolf.  We try to keep it mildly entertaining while including any info we can keeping in mind it's not a master class in scratch building.  Personally, I enjoy reading your San Francisco log just as much.  Your work is 12X's neater than mine and the colors are just fantastic.  Can't wait to see the completed ship's boat you're scratching.

    Enjoy summer down there!

    Hi Augie

There's nothing better than grabbing a couple of beers, sitting down and reading your build log front to back.  It is crammed with so much practical info and humor (...and tool endorsements  ).

    This built is another masterpiece!

Now picture that at sea, and it's not snow on the rigging, it's ice. And it's building up every time a wave washes over the ship.  Now you have to chip it all off. Climbing up there with hammers, axes etc to bash the ice away from her rigging in order to be able to sail her. Not to mention keep her upright. Those men were tough back then.

Hello Sjors, I've been going to find your build here and kept forgetting about it before I got here....getting old....so ok, off to a nice start.  At least you'll always rmember when you started....I'll get out the popcorn and beer and grab a chair.   Hard to believe those flat pices of plywood turn into a fine scale model....

    8:22 AM.

With those square doors that tiny superstructure make the impression of a little house to me. It could be design in our days from MVRDV dutch architects for example... Watching so many movies with all the doors with round corners have "intoxicated" me. Funny how the things were done on 1939 or before and how the designe of a single door has changed over the years.

Here´s a pic I have found on inet, you might have it. With the amount of pics on your log, I´m sure will be here... Anyway It´s another one that goes to my wall on a frame!

    Happy day!

My thanks to everyone who dropped in and your like votes.

It was still a little chilly in the garage but it's warming up, it was 55 F.  I tried to finish the bridge today but could not complete the crew hatch there.  The Admiral found a little brass looking bell dangling from a demitasse spoon.  It's still a little too large but I hung it anyhow.  I'm still going to look for a little bell though, like girls or ladies have hanging on a charm bracelet.
I also cemented the engine power telegraphs and repeaters and painted the bridge area.  I'm pleased.

Then I made the most aft part of the aft gun deck.  I made it out of brass sheet in the form of a T and soldered a 2 mm brass tube to the top for the flagpole / railing stanchion.  The bottom leg of that T has a hole for the pulley to hoist the dingy out.   I managed to shove this brass piece under the already existing deck and then covered it with a small piece of 1 mm ply as the continuation of the deck.  For all practical purposes it looks like it's made out of one piece of steel plate.  Still needs some dressing up on the bottom side.
Below that will be the aft deck spot light.

Next will have to be the rest of the hatch and AA gun bun hinges so I can start installing the deck slats and railing.  I also need to finish the periscopes, antenna mast and the snorkel pipes.

You may have noticed that I am working my way down do the main deck.

Below are a few pics of how all this looks as of today.

We are looking at the starboard side of the bridge with the engine telegraph and repeater, the antenna brace with the Admiral's bell.  It looks like I may to to some minor "body" filling under the railing top

This is looking into the bridge from a ¾ angle from the rear port side.  The paint is really grey, it may have taken on the reflection from that piece of plywood behind the model.

Looking forward and sorry for not holding the camera horizontal.  Here you can see the aft end of the rear AA gun deck with the flag pole / railing stanchion.  Right below that is where the aft deck spotlight will be.  What appears to be a hole below the flagpole is actually the vertical leg of the T where a pulley can be hung.  Yes, the gun bun still needs to be dressed properly and that's on the to do list.

This is a ¾ aft side view of the bridge looking aft from the port side.

Port siide view of the conning tower.  Ah yes, door hinges - - -

    Cheers,

I think basswood is good if you're going to paint it or cover it up with copper, past that to me it is just really too soft to hold a lot of detail, even though I didn't spend the $'s to change it out on mine.  I should have, but .......
