The ship's boats turned out great, and they look great mounted to the ship John. Good to see you back in the shipyard.

Well, I have returned home and re-opened the shipyard. So far, all I've been able to do is set up the Morgan on the workbench TV tray and set the whaleboats on the boat bearers to see how they look and take pictures. I'm waiting for a new drawplate that is larger than the Barnes to trim down the small dowels I have to a smaller diameter for the oars and harpoons. It should be in next week, then I'll start making the parts. The Barnes is too small a diameter for what I have. Here are the boats sitting on the boat. They are tilted too far outboard so that they won't fall off. The proper stance is to be attached to the blocks on the Davits and have a natural "hang" and then they are lashed to the Boat Bearers.

Hello guys, I'm back in Texas.  I'll be working on updates shortly.  We have to go down to Mercedes, TX for some dental work, so I'm actually not really home yet.  Just a brief note, I received a backorder from Proxxon for extension beds for the DB 250 Wood Lathe.  I had many inquires for these and special ordered them from Germany and they arrived last week.  I'm offering these to my MSW friends on a first come first serve basis.  I had 5 available, but now have only 4 available since one has already sold.  Based on past interest I expect these to only last a few days, so if you need one please act quickly.  Check it out if you have an interest.  Here's the link.  More on the Morgan to follow shortly.

Hi Adam, I just got to catch up on your log. I've seen the Mayflower several times over the years....your's looks better than the real thing. Nice job. Glad to see they're restoring it during the off seasons at Mystic Seaport. The ship was starting to look pretty ragged. Look forward to you joining The Morgan Club someday.

thanks to all who hit the like button and commented...much appreciated. Thanks Adam these guys were "tricky" to say the least. Fun little projects and fun to detail. I may have to wait a while for the harpoons and oars --- I forgot to bring my Byrne's Drawplate with me...not sure how I overlooked it but in the rush to leave it got left behind. So I'll probably go back to making the remaining yards (6 of them). I still have a few more details to do to the boats that I'll probably go ahead and finish though.

Adam, wasn't it cool to go aboard the Morgan? It's an experience every time I go aboard. Glad you enjoyed it and got to expeerience her. Look forward to you joining the Morgan Club.

Happy Birthday Dave....Fran did an outstanding job....rigging for her might be a good idea....then it's a family project. Sorry we won't be able to meet up this year, but we spent all our time in New England -- now headed back to Texas probably sometime in October. Glad you guys are doing well...have some shrimp and grits for us.

Love the whaleboats - they are done up very similarly to the mayflowers, you did a great job with them.  Inspiring seeing them actually go together correctly (considering mine my wife lovingly referred to as the mayflowers giant peanut.. needless to say it is not on the ship =) ).

Went to see the Morgan this past week - it was an experience and adds a bunch as I read back through your adventure building it!

    Fantastic work!

    John,
Amazing work. I like the way you built them, thanks for showing your method. Mini tutorial indeed. The boats already show some character and with tools will really shine.
I'm looking forward to seeing them fully fitted out.

I have not had time to work the framing of the forward spar deck yet but have at least a preliminary plan. The knees may be impossible to include but I haven't given up yet.

On another note however my wife surprised me with a home decorated birthday cake today. Chocolate - my favorite. Hmmm...maybe I should get her to help with sails and rigging the model when that time comes.

...not bad for her first 'ship cake.'

Five of the boats should look something like this at this point. The next steps will be adding the details to each of the boats. I will work on one boat at a time to add the rest of the details. Each boat is a model in itself and will get a lot of attention. these are the boats that will be attached to the ship on the boat bearers and davits. I will post pictures as I progress, however, it might be some time inbetween the photos since quite a bit of work will need to be done to accomplish a finished boat. Please be patient. I have been fortunate to be able to work on these as I travel. I estimate about 3 hours per boat to be at this stage of construction. Many more hours are needed for the details. The last picture shows a profile for reference.

Bruce I found some pictures on my website Gallery, "As She is Now" pages. Here is one showing it empty. The compass was a square box about 18" on all sides with the compass "dome" on top. It sat on the crossmembers inside the skylight. Looking up from the officer's quarters, there are a couple of "racks" (beds) on one side with curtains. Not seen from above. I can't seem to upload that particular picture for you. I took some pictures of my Morgan and you can go to the website to see the ones I referencing. They are down the page under the Len Turner pictures #38 I think (if I counted correctly)Here are acouple of pictures of my model.

Added the remaining details to the boat. The first boat is now completed and ready for painting. Completed the painting and ID'd it as Orange. One down and four to go. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Adding all the little stuff was fun and really made it look like the real ones. I will finish all the boats to this stage before adding the accessories to make them ready to mount to the Morgan later.

The first of the five remaining whaleboats is shown with the following interior details installed. The Cieling Planks were installed first, then the 5 Thwarts (seats), the Stern Sheets (lower decking or Boat Steers Sole) the Bow Sheets (lower decking or Harpooners Sole), the Mast Step, the Center Board Case, the Ribs above the Ceiling Plank, and the Cutty Boards (Aft Top Deck). All of the parts were made from 1/64" x 1/64" strips and also 1/32" thick strips measured and cut from the 1/64" and 1/32" x 3" sheets since these size strips are not supplied in the kit. The Thwarts are 1/32" thick material. This boat will be completly fitted out before completing the remaining 4 boats which will only be duplicating this boat. All five boats will be completed and then the tools, harpoons, tubs, sail and mast, etc. will be added to each completed boat.
