  1. This is my method, too. It works well. Just take your time and cut carefully.
  2. Hope your admiral gets to feeling better. I’m sorry to hear that she is ill.
  3. I haven’t gotten much done on the Victory for a bit because I’m still teaching myself how to carve. I’m steadily getting better at it and have been enjoying the learning process. Tonight, I carved a sea monster off the stern of the British frigate Winchelsea.
  4. Two questions, firstly do you have to do anything special to step your masts? Second, how do you secure channels so they they don’t rip out under the stress of installing the shrouds?
  5. I’m still working on learning how to carve. I’m getting better and I’ll be making another attempt at the entry port carvings in the near future. I still need some better wood, but I might go with cedar.
  6. Very cool! Very informative! I might have to give a card scratchbuild a try!
  7. Just keep working at it and don’t get discouraged. Always remember though, slow is fast. Take your time and have fun.
  8. After second layer of planking (and sanding, but no filling, because I cut individual planks and very carefully attached them, fitting them as I went).
  9. I used a hand plane on my last planking when it looked that rough. It worked wonders. Trim off the excess carefully and then sand it good to see how much filling you actually need to do. Remember, slow is fast.
  10. I will have to try this when I get around to installing my masts. Thank you.
  11. I usually lay the model on its side when planking. I just put it on the building board so that the board supports the model and use a tack hammer to drive in pins, or nails, if they are needed. I would read some of the planking tutorials on the site. Chuck, one of the admins, and an expert model builder, pre-bends the planks and uses CA to attach to the model. He doesn’t even use pins or nails.
  12. Microsoft word works wonders for printing out new labels and nameplates. If you’re not happy with the windows, just pop them off and reglue them. You’re doing great! Keep at it! Take your time and enjoy.
  13. Still working on the entry ports. After one massive failure, I realized that I needed to develop my carving skills, and buy some better quality wood to make my carvings from. Basswood doesn’t hold tiny details very well. However, I ran through the carving tutorials in the group project, which were very helpful, and I’m going to press on with the entry port carvings.
  14. Looking good! I’m building the same kit and I’m about a year and a half into it.
