  1. For now I am calling this an 'non-build log.' I didn't realize how long it has been since I posted (January, 18!!!). But there's nothing to update per se on the build. Lots of RL excuses: major yard work, getting contractor to build fence, staining same, and a couple of similar projects that took me up to April. Then RL decided to throw me a curve and introduce me to lower lumbar back pain in early-May. Without the details: I can't sit for long periods of time except in my recliner with various pain management stuff. After visiting four doctors to cover my options, I am scheduled for surgery in mid-October. Hopefully, a few weeks after that I can return to 'active duty.' That said, I haven't been completely ignoring the project. While in my recliner I have been researching gaff sails and rigging, pintles (of sorts), making sails, rudders, reviewing air brush techniques and weathering techinques. Lots of reading of logs here on similar small boat builds and these subject matters. I even did a couple of 'test runs on stuff.' I'll cover that later when I get back to the build. I have also been making plans for a future project with a dory kit a friend gave me. One of my first completed wood models was the same kit. The kit is a basic kit (level 2). But as I pointed out early in this log, I believe that simple kits provide an opportunity to challenge builders with changes to the basic model or a vision of a different techinque for the build or display. On this next build of the dory, I plan to do a 'diorama' of sorts. I will weather the boat and (current plan - subject to change) have it tied to a weathered dock set in some form of expoxy 'water' shoreline. So, I have lots of videos in my faves on a whole bunch of stuff related to weathering, creating water, even model train terrain making. I also found what I think will be a suitable display base. Again-subject to change. Just making plans and looking at options. So, I am not abandoning the build. I just have to get some things fixed healthwise. I felt I needed to let the world know I am around. Maybe not kicking much. And to let those following, this project is not abandoned.
  2. Following along. Good start. (You reminded me I need to update my 'un-build' log.)
  3. @DerekMc It also looks like you have quite a store room for your stash.
  4. @Dave_E A very ecclectic collection of items in your work area: Lava lamp, Greek vase (well it looks Greek), Tommy Emmanuel poster (great entertainer - seen him in concert a couple of times), etc.
  5. Great progress on this build. I probably speak for others by thanking you for the detailed photos on the project.
  6. Great progress on this build. Looks very nice. Thanks for the detailed pictures showing how you did the work.
  7. My workbench area. Bench itself. I have a computer station in the room, too. I use the same wheeled chair for both. And my humble nautical/modeling library.
  8. Nice looking boat. Great build. Thanks for taking time to detail your adventure.
  9. Coming in late to this party. Read through the log tonight. Thanks for all the photos. They really show the methods for building all the smaller pieces.
  10. Both look super nice. Each is unique and shows how there's more than one way to build models. Good job on both.
  11. Thanks. I plan on using acrylics. I want catch all 'overspray' since I will be using inside a room. Great video, thanks for the link.
  12. First, thanks for the build log and details. Great progress and commentary. One of the great things about these build logs comes from seeing different aspects of the modeler's setup. For example, they're workbench setup. I looked again at your paint booth set up (post 73 edited June 5). The hose goes into a bucket in what looks like a piece of filter paper. Is that correct? Do you have a top for the bucket with a center hole for the vent and some smaller holes in the top, hence the dark spots that we see? The filter would cover the holes, it appears. I am looking at a similar set up since the temperature in my garage varies so much (like up to 100 degrees this week) and I need to bring my painting operation into a more controlled environment. Thanks for taking a side trip in your build to answer these questions.
  13. Hopping on board to follow along. I enjoy reading about this intersesting ship and it's voyages.
  14. If you want more details to @ccoyle input : Link to copyright.gov. It gives additional details to what is considered fair use. But it is summarized concisely above.
  15. I keep forgetting to mention this. Olha Batchvarov is posting a complete video build log on this model. Recent post is number 32 from a day ago. I 'scanned' (as in fast forwarded through) a couple of them. Look great. Not sure what the colaboration efforts were but Model Expo ran a deal (aren't they always?) on the model and promoting her doing the video log. Most of the videos are 2 hours (one is over 3). Easy to search for since not a lot of YouTubers post 'Muscongus Bay build' for the subject. (A lot of videos to look through if you go the her YouTube channel.) Definitely in my notes to review more when I dig down into my stash and work on this model.
