  1. Hey there, it's funny because I just bought a "vintage" Essex solid hull on e-Bay myself! The plans and literature date it as 1953, there's also a copy of "A Notebook For Ship Model Builders" dated as 1950. I guess they had 2 sizes of this model, mine is the smaller(unfortunately). It's 5/64=1'. I only picked it up because the seller only wanted $15. they said it was complete, who knows? Looks like a couple of the fittings wax envelopes are empty? I may just for giggles, do a hull and deck version, no masts or rigging. Well, we'll see, I have a Model Shipways USN Picket Boat #1 waiting for me! This old kit looks like a nightmare to figure out! It will be just a test for me to see what I can make out of it...Definitely the newer kits are way more detailed and I would say, come out way more accurate.
  2. I used equal parts: plain white vinegar, household ammonia, table salt, lemon juice. I got this method and recipe from: www.wikihow.com/Age-Copper. There are quite a few different ways to age copper, this one worked well for me. Tape off everything but the copper, brush on the mixture, cover and let sit over-night. If not dark enough, repeat process, then clean with window cleaner. Hope it works for you.
  3. Flags are formed and installed, bow and stern. Just need a final "look over" then some deck interests (barrels and buckets).
  4. Flags are next then some final deck features, barrels, buckets here and there. Sure don't need to add much, so much already there!
  5. Got ready to install anchors, cleaned up details in preparation. all looks satisfactory...
  6. Thanks Dave, it's weird but I'm almost sad to be getting wrapped up on Her! I have a nice big display cabinet for her and a couple other finished kits. I do however, have a fresh USN Picket Boat #1 waiting patiently for my attention!
  7. That is an awesome build to watch! In my early model building attempts, I did a Plastic Revel 1:96. That was when I knew I had to go to wooden from then on! This book has great historical insight and illustrations of the restoration and old plans by the actual project supervisor. A very good read! Descriptions of Her famous battles and life aboard are also inside, maybe you or others may find it as great as myself...I'll be watching.
  8. This kit was the first wooden model ship I attempted also...It was a good learning experience. I used the electrically heated plank bender and forms to do the complex hull planks. Worked pretty good for me. you're doing a great job so far!
  9. Very nice work, I was going to tackle this one but selected the "Syren". I think this one is still in my sights!
  10. Been working on this for approx. 10 months, this is the progression as of today. Never expected to post these so they're not very detailed or high quality.
  11. Hello out there...I wish I found this site years ago! I registered but need to explore the site, can I enter background and a member "icon" and maybe some of the models I've built learning by myself along the way? Thanks in advance for your help. By the way, I guess I'm in "The Syren club" I'm getting to the finish on her.
