cog got a reaction from mtaylor in La Chaloupe Armée / 42ft Armed Longboat of 1834 by tkay11 – FINISHED - scale 1:36 - plans by M. Delacroix
At least I know where that septic worktop comes from ...
So far I've enjoyed your build tremendously (got the drawings in my "retirement" stash), and your build will be one I will certainly return to for guidance.
Take care with the operation, and wish you a speedy recovery

cog got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Skipjack by michael mott - 1/8th scale - SMALL - 19 foot open launch
I use a round file and twist it round to open up holes, when I use the exacto knife method I tend to make the edge look like saw's teeth <scratches head>

Marcus,
WIsh your wife well, and I hope she'll have a speedy recovery.
You have set your ambitions high with the ships of Abel Tasman, you'll have some exploring to do too.

I've been distracted from your log for far to long. Glad your health has been restored, and you survived the droppings from whatever Aussie predator (carnivor or veggetarian).Hope you get some more building, and a little less talking time ... that is to say for us

cog got a reaction from Obormotov in MONTAÑES by Amalio
You mean the build is an extension of one's self. Interesting, but then
it wouldn't necessarilly be a bad conscience, but the ship may not fit the builder
As some of the others have written, but in other words: I would like to see the "bad" or "ugly" pieces. Love the way you build develops

Hi Carl I can see why you would do that.
First I use a round file to open up the hole to close to the right diameter . Then I use the tip of an exacto knife and with practice you can make the knife slide smoothly like a miniature pairing chisel without causing the chattering which causes the saw tooth finish that you speak of. The point of the blade has to be just at the right part of its depth into the hole to work efficiently. I will see if I can make a short video to demonstrate what I mean. It is a simple operation but like many things take a bit of practice to get proficient at it. I have produced the effect you speak of myself on more than one occasion.

Thanks for the good wishes, as well as the compliments. Both are much appreciated.
When I told my wife of druxey's comment about showing the surgeons the pictures to promote accuracy, she said "Be careful with the comparison. Unlike modellers they can't re-do the bits that go wrong".
We're a down to earth family.

Original photos of Seydlitz show coaling winches, which are produced by a Russian company (I think) but are very nice.
The Modelkasten reel is 1/700 chain (it’s twisted rope but looks like chain.

You start to build your own fleet of destroyers ... gettin' like me
If you have a dazzle image taken square of the side of the ship, you could enlarge it to the size of your build and transpose it on to the hull. EIther by cutting it out and make a template with mask paper/tape, or draw it onto the hull. I used the former method for the H-class tribal I'm building. I scanned the required image from a book, cut out the different parts and copied them by tracing the shape on Tamiya masking tape the 2" width one. You should take into account, you will be painting from light to darker, as light doesn't cover a dark underground as well as vice versa. I painted the entire hull in the lightest colour, and then moved to a darker shade. I'll photograph the sequences in my next dazzled body build ... should have thought about ithat.
