Ok so an update on the tug. Everything is completed except the wiring of the Lights. So in the pictures here you will see everything except the pilot house and the masts. All of the painting is complete and the decks have been installed. The thrusters are glued in place. All of the deck furniture is screwed down.
Note - Since the students will be using some of these parts the design called for being able to replace some of the parts. On the stern you will see a block where the bollards can be raised to guide the tow line. Since this could break, the deck is removable so these bollards can be replaced. The story is the same with the thrusters. I expect the wiring to be completed this week. Please note the custom stand complete with waves. This was created on our laser. Once the Pilot house is completed, I will add railing to the main cabin top.

The customer has asked that we create a scale model of a bottle of Champagne for the Christening.

After gluing the framing to the bulkead I painted all the brass and touched up the edges using Acrylic mixed on a pallette :

I almost forgot two lines. I'll touch them up next time I mix up this colour, as well as any small bits I missed. That will finish the framing part of the build. Here's a pic for size reference :

Next up I start the engine itself.

A welcome to all that are following this build  . I hope I can do it justice.

I reverse-printed a sheet of parts and laminated a backing piece to the firewall and side frame pieces. The firewall piece is not strictly accurate, but it's better than a simple white face. Cutting the holes out of the framing sections took a lot of care :

Next I detailed the firewall. The back side :

And the front. I used 0.2mm soft brass wire for the tubing :

Some of the bracing for the framework was really tiny. These pieces are only 0.4mm wide at the narrow points :

    Gussets added :

    Hi all,

Here's a tricky build. It's a 1/33 scale attempt at a Rolls Royce Merlin engine to be displayed as a "stand-alone" model next to the Mk. IX Spitfire I built. It's a design by Alin Osarik and a downloadable copy of it can only be found on THIS SITE.

As far as I'm aware no-one has successfully managed to build one at this small a scale, and no wonder - some of the parts are TINY  . All other builds I have seen have been blown up to 1/16 scale. But I'll have a go  .

Here's a pic of the parts. They come on one page, but there are a further 34 pages of step-by-step rendered photo instructions :

One example of the size of the parts :

And this is what I've done so far. This is the start of the engine compartment framework that supports the engine. It's been designed to fit inside the Halinski Card Spitfire, which may be a future build for me as I have a 2nd model Spitfire that came with the original kit that I've already built.

    Thanks for saying...

For those who asked, here is a non blurry photo of the figurehead.  It was getting dirty do to handling with dirty fingers.  So I cleaned it up and applied a coat of sanding sealer.  It looks really good in person but is surprisingly hard to photograph in focus.  The color matches the stem quite well and its still hard to believe this was carved by machine. I didnt use wipe on poly because I dont want it to darken too much.  The stem where it sits will be painted black eventually.   Compare with the contemporary model.  You can see how crude it was carved,  I dare say that Jack did an excellent job improving its appearance.

Actually the knee is painted blue and black below it.  I am not sure if I will do the same.  I may just go with black.  Note the headrails.  They are not carved.  Instead there are friezes painted on them.  That will be an interesting detail to replicate.

In Theodore Roosevelt's book "The Naval War of 1812" (one of the very few books on naval tactics that I have read to date), he goes into extensive detail on the manoeuvrings of the combatants in many encounters. He even includes a number of sketches to help explain, such as this one:

Ok time for yet another update on this project -

The tug is in the paint shop for the final coat of paint & the Pilot house is in the electronics lab while we finish the wiring of the Navigation lighting. Today I will cut the acrylic for the stand. Final assembly should be this Saturday.

The pictures you see below are for the barge. We started with a template of the frame, which was 3D printed. This was used to create 6 frames. 3 frames for the bow and 3 for the stern. These were then attached to 1/8" birch plywood, which will for the deck. From there we will be forming the bow and stern shapes. then final sheathing with more birch ply. Once the hull is done we will paint and attach various deck furniture which has been 3D printed. Total length is 7 ft 2 inches. and she is 26 inches wide.

So what do you get PopPop on his 65th birthday when he already has everything he needs for his hobby? A paper on bulkhead model made from the pages of his own book. They even bought their own copy for the artist to make the model from the plans. If you look closely it has all the details of my model. Definitely one of the coolest gifts I've ever received!

One last element to add at this level a double wall filled with sand.
Before it is too heavy to turn upside down, 1 coat of tung oil is applied below first deck outside, it gives a complete different look to the cherry wood.
I did a photo of a word  program text. Before I was able to copy text from outside MSW, but now when I copy text, it is included as a photo in small definition!!!

My search for knives continue. I ordered new blades to try, assembly require.

After some further research and discussion with some informed friends...I opted to add sunsail booms to the main yards and the upper topsail yards.
Lots more work to do but its a beginning.
