jaerschen got a reaction from AON in HMS Triton 1773, 1/48, POF by Juergen
Hello, the next step is done and the Main Wale is fitted.
I had I little mistake nearing completion. The following photo should be a little help to declare it.

For fitting the last ledge of the Main Wale it was necessary to sanding the outside of the side counter timber at starboard side (blue arrow). But there wasn't enough material, the part was to small at this point (yellow x) . I had to many material removed at the inner side (red arrow).
The exchange of the part seems like too much effort to me. So I decided to glue a piece of wood to the counter and sanded it down. I believe that must be alright on the finished model.

And now some photos of the Main Wale. It's still to do a bit sanding on the port side.

I am currently decorating and between coats As the sun is shining,I thought I would take some pics of where the build is up to at the moment. No pics of the gratings yet as I will photograph these when I start building them up with their combings which will be in Ebony.
I have fitted the deck clamps back to roughly amidships. They extend right up to the deck underside. This isn't historically correct, however it is my intention to cut a 3mm deep rebate to take the lodging knees. This creates a flat surface for the knees to abut to,rather than contending with the severe tumblehome at this point. When assembled, the finished appearance will be the same as if I had built it historically correct. The hooked scarph joints are clearly visible. Both these clamps and the scarphed spirketting will be fitted with copper fastenings 0.8mm diameter extending completely through the hull as it stands now.I am undecided as to whether to represent bolt heads on the deck clamp fixings to illustrate proud bolt heads.
Work is progressing at a slow but steady pace on the deck plank fastenings.I have fitted two staggered fixings per main beam and one central for each ledge. The hatch openings have been roughly cut to size.Final finishing will be done when the hatches are made up.The area in front of the main hatch has further planking to be added for the flat capstan base.I got carried away drilling holes,I could have left this section

    Kind Regards

    Hello,
the nice words are a motivation again and again.
    Thank you for that!

Under no. 244 of my building report I showed the production of hooks for attaching the gunport lids.
This version was not satisfactory for me. The original hooks were of flat metal, not from round material.
So I made the hooks again. This time I let them etching of brass sheet 0.3 mm. That's not very expensive.
The drawing for the exposure film I made with a vector drawing program.
And now here are some pictures that probably speak for themselves, better than my poor translation.

    Here the comparison:
Links of the new hook, etched,
the right of the old hooked wire.

The last picture for today a look at the starboard side of the corvette.

    Crowsfeet

The Crowsfeet prevent the topsails from chafing the lower stays, and also stop them from getting snagged in the tops.

I used Gutermann Quilting Cotton for these. It's not quite the same color as Chuck's running rigging line, but it is the closest match they make. This stuff is made from cotton and has a polyester coating which makes it a little more rigid than normal cotton - this makes threading it through tiny holes a lot easier. It also has NO fuzzies at all .

The line starts on the strop at the top of the euphroe and passes over the forward edge of the top and through the middle hole. Then it comes back up through the adjacent hole on the port side, down to the uppermost hole in the euphroe and through the top on the starboard side. These steps are repeated for the remainder. The last line is tied off to it's adjacent partner underneath the top.

It was a difficult job to get even tension on all the loops of line. I had to go back over all the loops a few times to get an acceptable result :

I've often heard that that it's not about the destination but the journey that's important.  I agree but this journey is currently being measured in inches and not miles.

I added the timbers the taffrail will sit on and worked up and installed the two outer timbers for the counter. The whole stern area was then rough faired.  Final fairing will be just before planking.

The taffrail timber needs to be shaped after cutting loose the stern (the red curved line).  I still have a lot of shaping to that curve and most can be done while it's in frame and on the build board but I need to set up the rest of the stern framing.   This will be filling in the area between the final cant frame and the stern frames with framing for mounting the quarter galleries and the hatchway from the Great Cabin.   I'm have some ideas on how to do this as this another area that Hahn is a little vague on how to do.

Anyway enough out of me, here's the photos.   Feel free to click on and enlarge them to see everything in horrible detail.

Thanks, everyone for the comments and the likes.  I have finished the treenails.     I estimate that the whole process consumed about 25 hours of my life.  So my ugly duckling is now in the process of becoming a swan (class).  Sorry, couldn't help it.  I removed the hull from the board for the sanding process.  I find it easier to sand a curved object while holding it in my lap.  This gives me easier access to the various rabbets and the intersection with the wing transom.  In the process, despite using masking tape, the main wale has gotten fairly scuffed up and will require another coat of paint.  In the pictures the hull has been sanded down with 100 grit.  The treenails are hard to see because no finish has been applied yet.

I'm still here folks. Finished the keelson. I have laid 4 sets of planks on the floor of the ship along side the keelson (both sides). I have been researching what parts to do next - planking the outside, making mast steps, hooks, or deck clamps.............

    Hello Friends,
thank you for your encouraging comments.
At the bow of the French corvette, a small seawater pump was installed. Through a water pipe with a suction sieve, water was pumped up.
In the area of the underwater hull 3 more suction sieve were installed.

This suction sieve I made out of brass sheet 0.3 mm.
To prepare, I show the following Series:

Although the assembly line is still going full throttle, thought it was time for an update.

I set up a mock cannon station (thanks, MOBBSIE) to verify the required length of the breech lines.  Turns out, Chuck was dead on with 3 1/4", eye to eye.  One eyebolt/ring is seized to one end of the line, a second eye/ring slipped on then the cannon (and one more eye/ring).  Then the other end is seized to an eye/ring at the exact length.  That's 0.018 Morope by the way:

The cannon was then glued to the carraige and the loose eyebolts attached to pre-drilled holes.  The cap squares over the trunnions were simulated with short strips of 1500 grit sandpaper.  I have used painted artists tape in the past but this was much easier.

The assembled gun was then glued to the deck and the breech line rings attached to pre-drilled holes in the bulwark:

Here are the sternmost 5 guns in position.  Keep in mind that these guns will be totally obscured by the quarterdeck overhead:

I experimented with the tackles but they just look too crowded to my eye.  I'll re-evaluate when all guns are positioned.

Here's what it looks like from outside:

Finally, Ron from NZ asked for an overall shot:

Being a 'few' guns short of a 21 gun salute, I'll get back to work and hope to have then all in by Christmas.  No rush ---- I'm having too much fun.  Heck, the Admiral (who last wandered over to my side of the shop when I was cutting out the bulkheads) proclaimed 'This looks pretty nice  ----- but where do you THINK you're going to put it'?  I have about another year to negotiate  .

Everyone stay well.  And keep making my day with your updates.

Thank you all for the kind words and all of the likes. It is very much appreciated.

Well I’ve started chapter 6 now and started working on the stern. To start I have to cut the transom out of
some 1/32” plywood. I pasted the plans on and then cut it out with the scroll saw getting it close. I then
used various sanding tools to get it close to shape.

The windows were cut out using an x-acto and finished with files too.

Then the assembly was glued to the frame work.

    That's it for now!

    Popeye,

Thank you, yeah, it Looks a bit strange without the square sails put on but I have to do additional work on some of  the uncompleted Yards, and still I`m having some headaches with the two lower Yards (when sharp braced, Yard moving much away from mast).
I should rather have rigged the the first two shrouds in stand alone single lines on each side and mast with a quick loostenable additional tackle, also not incorporating the catharpins attachments to These.
Would recommend this to other modelers who may intend to rig Yards in a braced mode

    Thank you Juergen,

I`m quite happy to be so far with the build in the Moment. As my Amati plan Shows neighter sail rigging, nor stay sails, i hope and presume that the sails I did are not too wrong. I am using much more individual blocks for all those sail rigging lines than originaly intended, but I think it is worth it not to save material here.....

Top mast was fitted to the fore mast next, and the shrouds and ratlines have been added.

One tip I do have, which I seem to have omitted to mention in my earlier posts on the shrouds and ratlines, is that, most kit manufacturers instructions for ratlines, recommend using .25mm, or which ever size natural thread and then stain it black (a very messy option in my opinion) there reasoning’s being that black thread is to stiff to use well Caldercraft thread is quite stiff, but I always use Amiti which is no stiffer than natural colour thread.
    The main and mizzen next.

    Hi Antony

Ok, I would try to give a description of my opinion. I believe the lines at the sideview are showing the position of the frame at the outer edge and not at the keel.
The cant-frames are fixed at the keel a bit forward. I hope it's a bit understandable.
