  1. Excellent! It is great to see another person's approach to planking. I did similar and also marked the boat but next time I am going to make a more detailed table. I should add that I did not band because it was such a small dimension to begin with. I will band next time regardless of dimension.
  2. This post is extremely helpful. I did similar on La Nina, my first, But I did not use marks. I measured after each plank.
  3. This is Emmet Absolutely amazing. Sorry to hear your pay will be lower. I am retired and behaving myself while I am stuck in Florida. The cases here are much lower than New Jersey so it is best to stay here. I look at your ship often and want to build one like it. But I am not sure I have the room. I just love looking at your rigging. I am doing the rigging on La Nina and it is difficult enough for me as a first timer.
  4. Hi Snowy I had some big clips and tried it and yes, a great idea. See my post for a pic-don't want to use Rob's site too much.
  5. Yeah Rob I had to taper and bend almost every plank for La Nina. The dimensions for the middle vs. the bow were extremely different. I also did not know the soaking and plank bending as I did towards the end. It is why I am spending so much time trying now how to do it better. I had seen the directions Snowy mentions above but it was a tough job. There were many cases where I reduced the plank more than 50% and that is a nono.
  6. I will do this as soon as I can get some clips. I will not be doing planks for a while but I definitely will get to these clips.
  7. Happy Easter. Sorry for this pic but I could not resist this since I think their is an Aussie around.
  8. I know I should not do this but Happy Easter if you are so inclined.
  9. I should have added that there was a lot of bending edgewise which made it tough and I got glue all over the place. I got better as I went but it was a difficult thing to do for a first timer.
  10. Emmet here. Some great info in the above sections about planks. I did a lot of things using info found here and many other sources. In the end I soaked the planks and alternated pva with CA and the electric plank bender to dry the wood as you glued them. The La Nina is small and the bends were not that great. My major problem was having to trim or taper the planks fro 3 mm to 1.5 mm. It was hard to cut them. Next time I will make a jig. Snowy where do you get those office clips with the extra piece on them to press on the planks. It looks like you made them yourself. I have seen them before. I like how you get a broader area to put pressure on the plank. The idea about using pvc pipe to soak the planks is a good one. I will do that when I get around to Victory this Summer.
  11. Looks good! Great pictures! Are you letting the planks dry on the hull? I guess the stealers go in with the plank plan.
  12. I hope I am a registered user. At any rate I have only my first model I am building so I have no reference points. The Amati La Nina I am building is fine as far as I can tell. My only real complaint was a silly metal boat. For a first wooden boat guy the instructions were not there and one had to study the parts to understand what to do. A biggie was putting the wrong wood on the quarter deck. I just had to start and and had been thinking and reading too long. There were no builds anywhere that helped in that case. I found a slew of Santa Maria pics on another site which was helpful. Also the order of building did not fit my tiny ship brain too well. E. G. I still have not put the rudder on because I feel I might damage it. The keel is so small you cannot mount the boat at all in a firm way and I am using towels to keep it in place. Outside if these comments I expect serious challenges. It is why I decided to build ships.
  13. I am currently building the Amati La Nina and the scale is accurate with respect to spars and masts. However the qtr deck was not correct and in some cases I had to make my own parts but no big deal. I am planning on following up with Santa Maria as my traveling boat. I will go with Amati I think. I am also going to build Victory which was my original idea. That I will build at home where I have more resources and a better workshop. I thank you your comment and I will follow up on Caldercraft. I did look at Vanguard Models but did not see the Columbus ships. Thanks again.
  14. I understand there is a survey on ship model kits. I am interested in HMS Victory and would like to see survey results.
  15. Looks like a good start. Did the garboards go on easily or did you have to soak them and bend? Using nails helps a lot. Thanks for the survey tip.
  16. I have many books at this point-kindle is useful that way. I also have downloaded everything that makes sense to me from this site as well as from other sources. utube works but not necessarily for La Nina. It is good for some general understanding. Thanks for your input. If you know of a specific book please advise.
  17. Since I intend to build the Victory I am trying to make up my mind about which vendor I should use. I think it does not matter which vendor you use there will always be corrections for mistakes and lack of understanding of the intent or the kit provider. I did a lot more little things just like above that I did not show though I should have. I remember that I sanded the edges of the frames so that the planks would touch the frame more on a sharp bend. Sometimes I become so engrossed in overcoming a problem that I forget to take a pic until it is covered up. My log would probably be twice as large if included many little adjustments. Actually when I built things for my house it was the same process only on a bigger scale. I made many mistakes but the beauty of wood is the ability to correct and fudge your way through. My favorite comparison is sheetrock spackling. Most people will not see the mistakes I made but I will.
  18. Thanks I meant to say that I invite criticism of my pics and explanations. It takes some time to portray the work. I try to say as little as possible and I wonder if it is enough. I am trying to try to lay groundwork about the difficulty in doing the first ship. There is so much to learn. I want to be able to look back and review the log when I start my next ship. I enjoy your log because you seem to be giving more detail than other logs. The guys who have a lot of experience don't bother with certain details that they learned a long time ago.
  19. Haha My partner loved it when I always told him that people who do not make mistakes never do anything. Ship guys do not worry about mistakes. I do plan to build the Victory when I get home to New Hampshire. I have a good workshop there. Right now I am marooned in Florida. My admiral was telling me I have the ship all over the house. We decided to stay here rather than try to go home and staying in hotels and whatever. I do not have the room here to build a big ship. The La Nina is only a foot long. I will be following you and others along with utube and anything else I can get my hands on. Ship building is very challenging. Pretty tricky-when I put the URL in up popped the box below. You cannot see all of the mistakes I have made at this point but there are many. Some were reversible while others were not.

  21. Kinda neat. Carving these little beauties is a great way to pass time. My admiral and I were talking about things to occupy one during these strange times. I mentioned how so may people doing ships have their own little way of keeping their minds and bodies going. She prefers sewing and puzzles. I am currently struggling with rigging La Nina-my first ship.
  22. I need to say that I have many different things going on to accomplish the rigging. So while my pics look somewhat helter skelter it is all about rigging.
