The sun is shining and we have blizzard looking storm but it is all for naught as it hits the warm ground. I was prepared for all sorts of whatevers when I got into this stuff. I will do whatever it takes. I see complaints about the laser cutting on other logs. Putting the deck on shows me the slots for the longways beam are not correct. I am not doing anything until I add more decks and check every aspect possible. The kit seems good compared to the La Nina from Amati but it came out ok. The Santa Maria looks like a better kit. The Victory came so fast I only got around to translating the Italian instructions. When I go south in November I will be working on it.

Thanks Keith The plans are no help. McKays Victory shows the stern gradually sloping up towards the stern. My problem frame, however, is towards the bow. Still the slots for the longways beam will have to be corrected. I will keep exploring. It is clear that one has to file many pieces so that they fit. the lower deck took quite a bit of filing.

OK I do nave some left over. I could have used it. I was concerned about staying out of the way of frames that are close there. Our snow is gone now. It was 34-a hair over 1F. Actually the temp was higher on the ground. The snow was coming out of very cold air. I got the wood stove cranking this morning-very unusual this time of year here. The daytime temps, however, have been warm at about 12-15 C. I am into a complicated situation at this point in my build. I will be posting soon. Stay warm.

It would seem difficult to run a plastic spatula(or similar) over the surface in the bow area. I am not sure how to handle filler between the gunports- that looks tricky. I am sure you will figure it out. It is kind of like auto body work only in a much tighter area. In the end you will get it.

Right on Keith. Well I am not going ahead until I am satisfied with the certainty of the locations of the frames. I see some builders use blocks but that seems wild. I should be able to measure the frames distance and be sure of squareness with a simpler approach.I do not have any lego blocks but I will come up with a way of making sure that the frames stay where they are supposed to be when I glue them. Perhaps putting a wood band across, making a hole in the frame, gluing and then putting the frame back with the band being reinstalled making sure of the holes in the bands-just thinking. I was going to say that the distance between the slots on the keel are slightly different for each space.

Thanks Keith Trying to negotiate and website seems more difficult in building a ship. Right now I am dry fitting everything to be sure that all pieces are aligned With respect to the big slut I wanted to do something where I could put the piece in and out. The idea you gave me about the poop deck is the kind of help I need.

Thanks Rob Fantastic! I have used Minwax products for years. I did the La Nina with Bondi. It was a nice smooth job but a water product would be easier to handle. I am enjoying your progress.

Hi Rob What is name of filler? I never used a water based one and am interested in doing the same.

I'm in the process of doing inventory and writing instructions using those given. By putting things down in my own words I will, in a way, be building the ship in my mind. As I go along I will change my instructions to reflect gained knowledge. Hopefully there will be fellows like yourself that will be advising me. I probably would have done this without the website but it is much more interesting studying the work that you and others do. It will certainly make for building a better ship. Thanks for the encouragement,

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
