Mirabell61 got a reaction from JerryGreening in SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse 1897 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - scale 1:144 - POF - first German four stacker of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line
little update..
- a look into the hull
- a trial for painting the hull
- the "riveting" of the bowpost
- "glassing" the porthhole inserts (procedure)
Nils
here a dive deep down into the ship`s belly
aft section with the two drive shafts coming to the inside
this is the tape I intend to use for taping the painting borderline (not pleased with it yet), will have to improve the technique. Also the black color should be more dull, will do next trial with dull black oven-paint. The critical part is to get a good tape contact over the rivet rows, so that the paint does`nt creep under the tape.
The red paint is RAL 3000, silk-surface glaze, when drying
bowpost "riveting" is done around the bend
Am quite pleased with the result....
here using trimming line for grass-cutter for the "glassing" of the portholes
Cutting off a length
ready for final trimming
cut off directly at the porthole insert. "Glass" surface will be sunk in appr. 0,6 mm afterwards into the tube

Mirabell61 reacted to Stuntflyer in HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Stuntflyer (Mike) - FINISHED - 1:48 scale
Thanks guys for the kind words and all the "likes".
Chuck has designed a superb first time scratch build along with a monograph on how to build it. Even though there could be multiple ways of doing things, I admit that sometimes my methods have been wrong. One of my goals is to find better ways for getting the work done correctly on the first try, if possible, and avoid the re-do's. I think the learning process is one of the things that makes the hobby so interesting and at times challenging.

Thank you David,
your comment is very much appreciated.., I`m also quite happy with the Project so far. Presume that doing the superstructure will be far more ambitious...

Mirabell61 reacted to Dimitris71 in Amerigo Vespucci by Dimitris71 - Mantua - 1:100 scale
Hello shipmates, David B-Patrick--Jeff-Nigel (NMBROOK) ,I appreciate your kind words of support .
Nils-Brian-Don-Nigel I do thank you for your visits to my build log and also for your likes.
I was thinking how to simulate the black plates under the eyepins that are placed throughout the deck. So i found these plastic pieces from packaging... I painted them black and i cut them in half . I drilled them, and then put the eyepins inside. 8 are ready, 72 to go... Also the 2 windlasses on the stern deck are in place.
Kind Regards
Dimitris

Mirabell61 reacted to rafine in Cutter Cheerful 1806 by rafine - FINISHED
Inboard work underway. I have thinned down the bulkheads and made and added the false deck. This involved a fair amount of effort, but nothing that was particularly difficult or interesting to see.
For the bulkhead thinning, I followed Chuck's lead and started with a Dremel with a rough sanding drum, followed by sanding sticks and chisels. I also added filler strips at the bow and stern to aid in planking and to facilitate the drilling of various holes. When I was satisfied that all was thin enough and fair, I moved on to the false deck.
The deck was cut from basswood sheet using the template in the plans. I cut it a little oversize and trimmed to fit. Before gluing it in place, I cut the mast hole, the opening for the skylight and the notches for the stern frames. I also marked out the positions of the hatches and companionway and also marked the position of the "deck beams" in preparation for deck planking. I cut the deck into four pieces to make gluing it in place a little easier.
Now, it's on to the interior bulwark planking.
