Mirabell61 got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in ERGENSTRASSE by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - 1:87 - steamship
Today I finished the glass case, and my wife was so kind to clean the glass in- and outside, as well as to help carry and swap some of the other cases to a new display place in my hobby office.
This closes the project
Here some final pics of the casing and its build..... This was my 11th case I built this way and I`m pleased that to date there was no broken glass. I`m not so happy of the steadily increasing prices for glass, so I`m surprised of the glasser`s offers every time.
I would like to thank all that were interested in the build log, with many likes, wows, appreciations, comments and suggestions allong the ride.
Nils
the glass-panes are held with helping aids, such as the "third hand" clamped to the cupboard above, short fixing- and distance pieces, and preliminary self adhesive tape
the angles are well keep the panes in place
after the top panel is complete stained and framed, the 4 vertical profiles are stained an cut to length
now comes the final assembly.....
here again the clamped on "third hand"
the right angle corner
mounting the top panel ( lid) to the rest
metal corners fixed with stainless steel blackend philips flat cross-head screws (M1,7 x 6mm )
the glass bonnet set down on the base with the 6 interacting positioning pins, also the are 6 self adhesive felt patches under the baseplate to enable a smooth contact.

Mirabell61 reacted to Ab Hoving in Cat Esther by GrandpaPhil - 1/64 - CARD
Hello GrandpaPhil,
Nice to see that you take the challenge of the cat. And even with corrugated board. I did not know it was possible. I always held that material for inferior, but one can obviously be wrong. One piece of advise: Use more frames in the midship part. In the course of building you will often hold the model in one hand or between your knees (I do that a lot), adding or adjusting things. The chances that you will press too hard and squeeze the model are high.
Good luck with this project, I will follow with interest (I never built with corrugated board).

Patrick,
Thank you very much!
There’s not really too much to this one.
The most difficult part is going to be the really bluff bow and stern.
I’m basically trying to emulate Seahorse’s design with the side braces.
I’m going to add additional pieces to the bow and stern to help the “planking” take shape.
This one will have the vertical covering like my Prince de Neufchatel and Hannah, with the second layer being contact paper.
The bulkheads are cut out and test fitted:
The dry fit went well.
For the most part everything is square.
There are a couple of spots that need adjusting, but overall everything looks pretty good.
I’ll adjust those and then plan on gluing.
Next up will be keel and stem/stern post pieces to act as a rabbet.
Along the way, I’ll make the former pieces for the bow and stern.
The main covering will be hought-board.

Andy / Brick - they must have been made in their billions. Now sadly cosigned to that technological scrap heap in the sky.
Brick - it's not your age - they date from 1990's.
Thank you John.

Mirabell61 reacted to Siggi52 in HMS Tiger 1747 by Siggi52 - 1:48 - 60 gun ship from NMM plans
Hello, and thank you for your likes
The ladders now are ready and installed! That was not my week. I don't know how often I build at least the planks until they fit and new jig's for the saw. But that is snow from this morning. When I haven't forgot anything, planking the QD my next big thing at my list.
Here the craftsmen have them ready
and fit in
And also the stair for the officers. There is not much headroom for them.

Mirabell61 reacted to Louie da fly in Golden City by Louie da fly - Scale 1:50 and 1:25 - solid hull - Paddlewheeler
I'm starting on a model of the Golden City, a paddlewheeler which operates on Ballarat's Lake Wendouree, run by volunteers and taking passengers for trips around the lake every summer Sunday (weather permitting). It is a replica of one of the paddlesteamers which did the same thing back around the turn of the 20th century (unfortunately destroyed by fire some years ago).
It will be a Solid model, and I'm first making one at 1:50 to iron out the bugs. After that I'll be making another at 1:25 to present to the people who run her, who also run a museum dedicated to the vessel itself and its history.
I've spoken to one of the organisers who's very keen on the idea - apart from anything else, visitors to the museum get disappointed when they can't see the vessel if she's out on the lake, so a decent sized model (68 cm or 27 inches long) would be a great help.
I've actually started on both models already, and if it all works out I'll simplify the design and make multiple 1:50 models to sell to visitors, as a fund-raiser for both the museum and for the Men's Shed where I make stuff (and which has so many wonderful boys' toys, like bandsaws, lathes, bench saws etc etc).
Here are some photos of her
And some I took close up while she was in her boatshed.
Plus photos of the plans which the museum kindly got out for me, and which I then redrew to make the model.
And here are the smaller and larger models so far. As you can see in the first and second photos the deck overlaps the hull considerably.
Upside down, showing the overlap.
And with 'paddleboxes' - just cut from a bit of 20mm wood with a hole saw and cut in half.
Comparative sizes - 1:50 in front and 1:25 behind.
The two together with paddleboxes. The bit in front is the roof awning, which fortunately is flat. And another shot of the two together. (The phone camera reduces the size contrast in the first photo and exaggerates it in the second.)
I think the most difficult bit for me will be the posts that hold up the awning and the railings. I can't see any way to make them except out of wire, and I'm currently rubbish at soldering. Well, another skill I'll need to learn . . .

Thanks, gentlemen, for your kind comments!
Pat, I obtained the tape from a local art supply store. Here is the link to the manufacturer's Web-site: https://www.neschen.de/en/product/filmoplast-r/#pdetails. They probably sell world-wide, but I would suspect that there are other manufacturers with similar products. Basically it is an extremely thin silk-paper to which a film of heat-activated acrylic compound is attached. This acrylic film actually detached quite easily and could be used even for other applications.
