yesterday,  I was able to do some of the winch assembly.   at the moment I'm leaving it to the point  I can take it apart,  so I can rig up the spools with rope/cable.   I really want to use the hemp thread.......but it's not uniform in thickness and may not run very well through the blocks.   I have quite a few rolls of the Billing's rigging thread....many sizes in fact......but I'm not happy with the fuzz factor.   I'm not a huge fan of bee's wax either.  perhaps I can treat some of the thread.......I'll have to experiment a little

anyway........I ended up making a gearbox........starting with an oblong piece of wood.  I squared it up and cemented a plate over both ends......one end will lap over the base of the frame.   the edges were rounded off,  and the flats sanded smooth.  the next thing to do,  was to drill the holes for the shaft......but before I did that,  the side I had cemented was removed from the base,  and I made the legs shorter.   I thought it looked a bit too tall.....after both sides were made the same height,  the side was cemented back onto the base.   the process starts again

measuring the assembly,  I got the overall length of the reel.   this was transposed to the base....marked.....and copied for the other side.   the gearbox and the other side was cemented to the base.

....and the excess base was cut off.......

making sure that the holes lined up OK......the shafts were run through.

then I began to cut up some planking....thinking I ought to get the fish box {or fish boxes} in the works.  to begin,  I will cement them three high.......the height of the bulwarks for the moment.  one of them will only be two high......for facing the hold.

I showed these a while back........the keel cut outs from the AmericA build {strange how I know where I got these from}.  I have been wondering when I would find a use for them.   I chose them because they will make ideal posts....some of them are different lengths,  should I have to lower the wall.  I'm sure I will along the bulwarks and hold face.  I need to sort them out.

while I was doing this........the paint was drying........getting the winch closer to a final assembly.

I heard something hit the floor...........one of the booms,  that I had to my left on the folded cloth tarp.  I still need to touch them up.  to keep them out of the way,  I put them in their place on the mast,  tying them up so they wouldn't lay on the bulwarks.   I like the way I did this.....looking like a pulley assembly.  I want to mimic the diagram......but this is kinda cool too

more assembly is in the works for today

I have made a new bell and am much happier with it.  It is in better proportion and I was able to get a smoother finish as well.  Like the first one it is gold leafed.  The first three pictures show the assembly before a finish was applied.  The last two show things after a coat of Watco's.

Michael, never thought for a nanosecond that you would even consider it.    Makes for okay flotation in an RC model if you leave room for expansion while it cures but not a closed boat hull.

    Michael,

as sad as it is, thanks for sharing that pic of the "minute after", now its fully understandable how the damage took place..
I have 5 models in glass cases (3 of them on a shelf behind me), and was often thinking what possibly could hapen if the shelf dowels give way, a nightmare !!...

    Hi folks!

Just a quick update on Shadow.

I've been concentrating on getting the external superstructure built. So far, most of the general shape is there; well enough to see the beauty starting to come through.

Still heaps to go, but time's been limited lately.

Hopefully, I'll be able to get more time later.

    Have a great weekend!

    Cheers

    Patrick

Druxey, we must have been typing at the same time, the comment about repaired damage by previous folk made me smile, because there are a couple of the small cage fans pinned to the top of one of the skylights at a 45 degree to each other and obviously in the wrong location.

Jack, I can assure you I will not be using any foam, I might end up foaming at the mouth dealing with the hull side though.

Hi Nils yes the original base had a narrow footprint and the model was knocked over, this was the first image that I saw. It looks like a few of the rectangular port holes got swept up with all the broken glass, when they cleaned up the area.

Druxey, I fear you are correct on this score, I also notice that the hull was brush painted (very well I might add)

Denis The credit goes to Brian Small, we have crossed paths on a number of occasions related to models, on this site as well as some others, the client contacted Brian and Brian contacted me.

Scott I would think that they had a very sinking feeling.

Denis funny you should mention the lifeboats, I woke up in the middle of the night and I started to think about what I had let myself in for and specifically thought about the lifeboats, it was a standard practice in England to use Jellutong for a lot of small parts like these, and I just happen to have lots of scrap bits of Jellutong. I plan to scarph in small bits and re-carve those areas.

    Hah Nils!

I just had a little chuckle. Those vents reminded me of a whole bunch of meerkats checking out the view. All standing up straight and facing the same direction.

    Hi Michael,

I`m very happy to see a model of this beautiful liner (former NDL "SS Muenchen", completed by Bremer AG Weser in 1923).....
The sub waterline rudder- and screw arrangement reminds me of my own current project
Do you know how and why the damage occurred to the model. Hat off to the take over of the restoration, surely a very ambitious project of yours.
Wish you all the best, much endurance and patience and a lot of fun with the mending of this fantastic shipmodel...

It's always surprising to find more problems as one begins to assess damage in detail, Michael! I think your biggest challenge will be to inpaint the hull locally rather than have to repaint the entire side. It's not so much color matching, but getting the surface reflectance right.

Best wishes as you begin to restore Albertic.
