Hi everyone, another overdue update. All the topmast shrouds are now done. The camera is brutal, but they look ok from a foot away. I have also started doing some of the ratlines for a change of pace. Cow hitches were used on the end shrouds, with clove hitches on all the others. This may take some time...............

@Sjors: thx. How was your Saturday in Luik? Was the car big enough to get it all back to Bleiswijk?
    @Edwin: thx

    And now my weekly update:
As you can see, I finished planking the decks. Quit satisfied how it looks now with all the decks done.
Just started planking the upper side of the hull...

Another small update - futtock shrouds done. The chainplates were made by wrapping the deadeyes with .8mm brass wire & soldering them shut. Then the ends were cut off & flattened by pinching them in a vice. Finally,a hole was drilled in the flattened ends. Hooks left over from a previous build were used to rig the shrouds.Smaller hooks were used on the mizzen shrouds.

Welcome back Sjors, glad you found your Mojo, that little guy can be hard to reel back in when he takes a vacation.

Planking looks good but I have a question. Here in the States we have something called Top Ramen, a noodley food like product. Why would you use that for your planking and how on earth did you get the noodles straight enough to plank with???

The top planking ( ramin ) on the starboard side is done.
Under that there will be sapelli wood.
And nope, not a second planking .
    Just single in two colors.
The frames for the gun ports looks if I was drunk when I cutting them.
But there is a frame coming inside and ( i hope ) you don't see a thing anymore ( in a few months ! )
Bending the planks for the bow was not that difficult but I can not say that for the stern.
The plank has to be twisted !
When everything is on it I will see what I will do with the planks on the stern to get a straight line.
There also are little slits between the planks.
I can cover a few with the rubbing strakes but not all.
Filler is out of the question because you will see that when I put Tung oil on it.
Comes time, comes advise ( or something like that )
    Enjoy the pictures.

    Hello again...

the Berlin grows and grows. I am still busy with the standing rigging - just do a few things as it's still summer. But it takes good progress.
I am very pleased with all and see no difficulties around - but you have to understand the plan. It's a little bit confusing. But it's a challenge - and that's what counts.

    Some pics as always...

    Hi Mates,

Frank thanks – nice of you to comment – much appreciated needed a “pep talk”…Denis Cheers as well !

Mates -Apologies for venting on my last post. Not a place in which to do this. Your kindness in following along, posting or just dropping in is not for some builder (me) complaining.

That said - after, I decided to go outside, smoke a nice Churchill (along with a Single Malt (or two) of course).  Listen to my baseball team on the radio, and also allow for some introspection. Cigar took care of any TV-  Admiral would have lowered the plank and pulled out her sword. Can't blame her actually...

It then struck me that to rush parts that are not “fun” will result, on the backside, with disappointment. Especially given the attention that I have spent trying to build it as best that I can “right” so far. Thanks Frank!!

So I will work in this area more carefully spending all of the time that I need to not feel that it is work, but instead as a new challenge in trying to improve my skills.

    Minor update:

Found a way to add those reinforcement bits to the sails. Tea steeped some left over sailcloth to allow for a slightly darker tint.

Found that Gorilla Wood Glue is perfect for fixing those little cloth bits, and still allow flexing.

Added little dots trying to achieve the stitched look – not sure on that part. Too dark I think?

Won’t post until I really move forward – no point in boring you mates any further with this area.

As always thanks so much for the likes, posts or just dropping by……

    Cheers,

    Michael,

The amount of detail you are putting into the sails (as well as the rest of the model) is amazing!

Even though you say working on parts of the sails is "not fun", I'm sure you will be glad you made the effort in the end!

    Congrats!

    Frank
