Santa Maria Painted Hull?
Papa replied to Papa's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Samuel Morrison in his Columbus biography writes. “ the ships' bottoms of that period were "covered with a mixture of tallow and pitch in the hopes of discouraging barnacles and teredos” so if I can figure out what color “tallow and pitch “ would be I’ll be historically accurate. -
Santa Maria Painted Hull?
Papa replied to Papa's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
that sounds like a plan -
I have decided to finish my Santa Maria kit that I put aside more than 20 years ago out of frustration. My biggest issue now is that the wood on the lower part of the hull is very blotchy. I made several messes with the planking and did a poor job staining which I then tried to correct by bleaching and sanding it out. My question is: would it be appropriate to paint the lower hull an off-white. The Mini Mamoli kit of the Santa Maria shows the lower hull painted white. All the other models I’ve view are natural wood, but that just isn’t going to work. I purchased the kit at the 500 anniversary of Columbus’s voyage in 1992! Ron Gove

Thanks. I should have said the “windlass”. A capstan is quite different😬 I will blame it on just turning 77!

A word of advice, learned the hard way😬. Drill out and install the hawse pipes and mooring ports BEFORE installing the windlass assembly. They are very much in the way. Second lesson: Remember all those laser cut parts you looked at when starting the kit. I forgot the knees for the windlass were already made for me! I scratch built them. Good experience i guess Perhaps I should have made notes on the plans and instructions about all those parts.

You could add plastic wood. I did that successfully on an old Model Shipways kit.

“As I'm genetically unable to simply build a kit as provided, I'm trying to build her as USS Thatcher DD-514, as she appeared” i have the opposite problem. I have trouble building a plastic model as intended.

I’m not sure if I like this base or not. I may end up just getting a regular wood one from Model Expo. The map is a strip from an old whaling map showing where to find various species.

Inserting the tryworks pots is a bit of a challenge. They are wider in the middle than at the top lip. So one cannot simply cut a hole and drop them in. The photos show my solution.

I am constructing the tryworks now. The bricks are an embossed sheet of HO scale bricks. One gets the mortar lines by painting with a white or grey and then wiping the paint off. A residue remains in the joints and gives a pretty good look.

Thanks. I had to toss 2 tries before I got this one. I thought about leaving the door open and doing some inside detail, but it was hard enough getting the outside to fit.

I fished the little companion way and built up the bow sprit bits. I wanted to make sure the bits were positioned properly so I roughed out the lower part of the bow sprit to rest fit.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
