  1. Well thank you my friend. I will give it a practice. By the way, I exhausted my supply of wood deadeyes and switched to your 3D printed ones painted to match the wood. Can you tell which ones are your’s and which ones are wood?
  2. No Kevin. That is something I am still thinking about getting. I just mixed some epoxy. The wires that I made the loops in run the full length of the dolphin striker so I had plenty of gluing surface to attach them to the back. Would solder work for something like that? I have always thought solder was good for holding electric connections and such together, but did not know if it had any real holding strength.
  3. Well many months ago I decided to replace the Heller plastic dolphin striker with a brass rod for added strength. What I as I thinking? When it came time to officially run the three martingales and the one fore mast stay I did not have the four needed holes in the dolphin striker. I could have just wrapped the four lines around the dolphin striker and then on to the appropriate blocks and tackles (which I did) but without the freedom of the line at the dolphin striker I could not snug the line as I needed. To solve the issue I removed the dolphin striker rod and replaced it with a new one I made with two small loops on each side. I think this will work fine providing metal strength and unobstructed slide of the martingales and stay.
  4. Finished the top mast backstays (breast, standing, and shifting) for all 3 masts. Moving up the masts to the next level stays and backstays. Still a good ways to go on the standing rigging but I think I am getting near starting running rigging! Will be so glad when I feel confident enough to do the final tightening of the lanyards on all the shrouds and backstays and then trim off all the excess thread. I am very neat by nature and constantly seeing all these haphazard ends of threads drives me crazy! 😊
  5. That is the exact route we drove Twahl. Even drive out that long road to get he shallow lake. Will have to share the absolute craziness we experienced at our hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. Wow! Ian, Zion is definitely in the list.
  6. Hello bcochran. After your post on my Victory build I thought I would check out your Cutty Sark. Absolutely beautiful job! Very impressive. Your Cutty Sark work is definitely a level above mine. I for sure remember me having a discussion here on MSW about it he windlass and the running of the anchor chain. Will have to look back to that. I read through your entire build here and find it very interesting. I will follow along to see how this goes. I also used Testors enamels on my Cutty Sark and USS Constitution before that. Since then I switched to Vallejo acrylics because for me they are just easier to work with, although not nearly as durable. I see where you said you are turning 76 soon? I hit the big 70 in August.
  7. Thank you bcochran. I also loved building the Revell Cutty Sark. Have you started a build log here on MSW? I will have to check. If interested you can look in the index for my build. That was several ships ago and as you can tell looking at pictures from that build, I have learned more with each from the fine people here on MSW. As I told Kevin in previous post as he is working on his CS, that is one I would love to do again employing the new things I have learned since I built it, especially the shrouds and ratlines.
  8. Thank you gentlemen. Daniel I must admit getting a “wow” from the master makes me feel a little proud! 😁
  9. Went ahead and put up the fore top mast backstays (breast, standing, and shifting). Will take loose the lanyards when time to do the ratlines.
  10. Twahl when you say “start our busy season here with the tourists” make me wonder what business you are in? My wife and I have it on our travel list to visit a couple, or all 5, of the national parks. Three years ago we drove from Kentucky out to Yellowstone and then headed south through Jackson Hole to Salt LakeCity. We had already been gone two weeks so decided we better head on back rather than continue our adventure further south to the parks. Will want to pick your brain for advice.
  11. I am glad the new instructions show the rigging for the yards. The Heller Victory instructions (older version) does not clearly show it as you can tell since you have both. That is what I am spending time now researching with the old instructions and my Longridge book. I know each yard has a number of blocks strategically placed along each yard for future running rigging. I want to tie all of the blocks on before attaching the yards to the masts. Just have to sketch it out so I know what goes where. If I can help you in any way please just ask. I have no doubt you will do a fantastic job. Except that it will take a good while to finish. In fact don’t even think about finishing it. You will in due time. Just enjoy the journey. I am a few days from 11 months since I started mine.
  12. Twahl I have the new instructions for my future Soleli Royal build. I see in these instructions that Heller clearly shows where blocks and other rigging go on each yard. Does the new Victory instructions provide the same information.
  13. Oh so you had the backstays tied at the mast but did not have them attached at all before doing the ratlines. I guess that would cut out doing double work.
  14. Your right about that Kevin. The rigging does seem to take ages but I enjoy it once I understand a particular line. Especially the shrouds and ratlines. That is something I would for sure do different on a new CS and Constitution. Both of my models in their case have the Revell plastic molded shrouds.
  15. Kevin watching you build your CS combined with the knowledge I have gained building my Victory, makes me want to rebuild the Revell CS and USS Constitution. I have them completed and in cases but back then I just followed the instructions. Made very few changes, if any, as my build blogs of those two ships here on MSW will attest too. With still quite a ways to go on my Victory and my Heller Soleli Royal waiting patiently, I doubt I will build those ships again, but who knows? I am not throwing in the tools yet.
  16. By the way Twahl, you are doing a beautiful job!
  17. That is what I did Twahl. I have 6 different sizes of black thread. I use the spread sheet of thread sizes I got and round up or down to select the closest. I have .35, .45, .55, .65, .80, and 1.0 mm. I also have a standard spool of black sewing thread for any need smaller than .35mm. The 1.0 mm is a little smaller than the the largest black thread called for but I can live with it.
  18. That’s a great idea Ian. Just undo the lanyards for the backstays, tie the ratlines, and then redo the backstays.
  19. Thanks Ian. I thought I was doing it correct according to Longridge. Glad you mentioned the black bead mouse. That was my first time high I did paint. After that I decided to leave them pearl. Need to go back and remove the acrylic paint from these first two. What is your opinion about the backstays and the shroud ratlines? Should I go ahead and do the ratlines before backstays are in place or reach through the backstays that will be positioned in front of the shrouds to do the ratlines later?
  20. Interesting question for you guys. I am currently working on adding the backstays to the masts. I have looked at Longridge and a number of builds here on MSW for the placement of the loop for the stay and preventer stay. On mine I have the loop made by the fore and main stay and preventer stay going around the shrouds and back stays at the mast head. Others I have seen (see attached photo as example) show the backstays placed on top of the loops of the stay an preventer stay. Which way is correct? When I read Longridge, he says to place the back stays on top the shrouds. I did it that way and have the loops of the stays going around the top of the shrouds and back stays. (See 2nd photo which is my ship). Does it matter?
  21. Ok gentlemen I have finished the jeer blocks on the fore and main mast. I am now ready to move on to the different backstays. I immediately see the the breast backstay and two of the three standing backstays are in front of the shrouds. Should I go ahead and do the ratlines first or work around the backstays later to tie the ratlines?
  22. No Ian. Those are just threads I put through the blocks to hang weight from for the photos. No actual bunt lines rigged yet. Appreciate your compliment. I learned that is for sure a step I will do sooner in the standing rigging on future builds. Little tedious working around the shrouds. I have to admit Ian this rigging is really starting to make since thanks to you. And as it does it becomes easier to understand what and how to do a particular line. Thanks again for the spread sheet of line sizes. I use it constantly!
  23. Ok my friends this was a full Sunday’s work. Got these rigging lines (whatever the proper name is) completed on the main mast. I do not have any triple blocks for the upper block so I just used the largest doubles I have. Also used a large double block instead of a thimble for the middle one.
  24. Great Ian that makes perfect since. Another thing I have been looking for with not much luck and wonder if any of you know a reference I can use is the layout of the blocks and other rigging that goes on each yard? It will still be a bit before I start working on them but would love me to find what I need in advance. I plan to tie all the foot ropes and necessary blocks to each yard before I attach it to the mast. Don’t know if there is a simple diagram that might show what is needed on each yard and where positioned?
  25. Ok gentlemen another rigging sequence question. Trying to determine how Longridge suggests doing it. Do you recommend putting on all the stays up through top gallant stays and royal stays before any of the back stays, or do you recommend some other sequence?
