The piping and wiring is all done :

This drive chain wasn't east to cut. The chain is only 0.3mm wide and it's also double thickness :

Now it's time to fit the engine into the framework. This will be a real test of my accuracy - there's absolutely NO room for error. Here's the result :

Thanks Popeye. If you think my model looks good check out this pic of a restored real engine :

Stunning work Danny....... I'm a retired Jag mechanic,so I have had a long love/hate relationship with V12's.  I used to go to the Reno air races and there is nothing like the sound of a Merlin hammering full throttle overhead.

Fear? I live in dread of every new step. I look at the plans. I look at previous builds. I read the books. But believing I can do it is a whole other matter. OK. I make a stab at it. I make a mistake. I start again. I make another mistake. I go on until I reckon I can live with the mistake. Then the next step. Several steps down the line I find I've done something which makes the next step very difficult. Think .... and this is the exciting bit ... how to get around the mistake and carry on. Ha! I've found a way out. I can then continue. And so on.

I really like modelling not only for the satisfaction of completing a build and the beauty of wood, but even more for the satisfaction of thinking. Thinking how to interpret plans. Thinking how to approach a problem. Thinking of how to overcome mistakes. Thinking about the skills of those who made the ships and sailed in them.

I am sure that in your life of working with wood you've experienced something similar. So to my mind fear, anxiety and apprehension are an intrinsic part of the process. Getting over it is part of the satisfaction.

Ted - are you kidding me ??? Your modelling history is almost EXACTLY the same as mine, just in a slightly different order (the Revell Constitution was my first ship model at the age of 13, which I bought from my pocket money). That was followed by several others including Mayflower and Cutty Sark - I still have the Cutty but it needs restoration which I'm not going to bother with. My first Wooden ship was Charles W. Morgan which I built at age 25. Weird eh   .

From looking at your previous models and your woodworking experience in my opinion the only thing you may need to learn is Planking. There's plenty of advice on this Forum on doing that, so that's covered. Also plenty of Build Logs to show you the step-by-step way of building a wood ship.

So dive in - choose one of your collection, open a Build Log for it to get any advice you may need (and to show us how good you REALLY are at wood ship building   ) and get cracking.

Mark has a good point about the possibility of the brittleness of your kit timber, so check it out. The planking timber may need to be replaced, but extra timber is available from various sources.

Lots of small bits to make now. Here are some examples.

    Rocker Covers :

18 parts in this valve :

    Starter Motor :

    Injector Manifold :

    Compressor :

    Oil Pump? :

Thanks Pav. The card is actually held down with very thin double-sided tape, not glued.

    The rocker covers :

There were no exhaust pipes with the kit so I printed out the ones from the Spitfire. These took me two days to make, but I'm very happy with the way they turned out  :

Thank you for all the comments and "Likes"  .

The first part of the engine in the instructions is the Supercharger. I've nearly completed it below :

These parts took me a while to cut. So far I've come across four similar ones, all turned out fine with no accidents despite some of them being only 0.35mm wide :

    The supercharger finished :

I reinforced the engine block with some 0.5mm card :

    Another tricky piece :

The cylinder heads took quite a bit of work due to the "bumps" on the sides :

    The oil pan :

After gluing the framing to the bulkead I painted all the brass and touched up the edges using Acrylic mixed on a pallette :

I almost forgot two lines. I'll touch them up next time I mix up this colour, as well as any small bits I missed. That will finish the framing part of the build. Here's a pic for size reference :

Next up I start the engine itself.

A welcome to all that are following this build  . I hope I can do it justice.

I reverse-printed a sheet of parts and laminated a backing piece to the firewall and side frame pieces. The firewall piece is not strictly accurate, but it's better than a simple white face. Cutting the holes out of the framing sections took a lot of care :

Next I detailed the firewall. The back side :

And the front. I used 0.2mm soft brass wire for the tubing :

Some of the bracing for the framework was really tiny. These pieces are only 0.4mm wide at the narrow points :

    Gussets added :
