To complete the work in the Great Cabin the Lockers received two lids and a couple of fill-in pieces :

Next I fitted four planks to the Lower and Upper Inner Counters :

A Sill finished off the top of the planking, and Cover Timbers were fitted between the Lights over the framing :

    Great Cabin Lockers

There is a bank of Lockers under the stern lights in the great cabin. I've fitted a triangular shaped piece for the hinges, and made the panelled piece for the front :

    Danny,
Nice work; your eyes are obviously not that old yet and you've a steady hand. Deservedly, you've received many accolades for your work on the stern lights. I notice the frames are not just butt-joined, but lap-joined. I don't know whether to burst out in laughter, or break down and cry.
    Cheers, Tom

Well, I've been busy beavering away on Pegasus.

I'm working on a couple of different parts. I wanted the get the rubbing rails complete so made the quarter badges. They were really easy to make and look so effective.

The first two parts are wooden and painted black, here they are glued together:

The rest is of brass etch painted white, gold and ochre:

I glazed the windows, a piece of clear plastic is included in the kit for this. I found it easiest to cut a piece a bit larger then the window part I was glazing. I then used bostic all purpose glue, and with a pin, spread it on the back of the brass window and stuck it down on the clear plastic. When stuck, I used a sharp knife and cut around the window. any glue strands that showed through could be easily scraped off with a pin:

Glazed windows ready to attach to the wooden surround:

Make sure the windows are flush with the surface:

The two pieces for the top and bottom parts of the quarter badge are stuck together:

Then attached to the unit along with the two other parts:

Next were the posts that went between the windows. check the fit on these before you stick them on. I found some were too long to go in the space and had to trim the bottom off:

    The finished quarterbadge:

    Thanks for the compliment Aldo.

I took some photos of the great cabin and the captains cabin I created. I made the furnitre to fit and when I posted it back in my old build log, my friend Laerte jokingly suggested I put a map, sextant, calipers, wine bottle and glasses on the table. I took him up on the challenge and created what you see now!

That took some doing David - the Postcard of Welland may have been on Ebay, but it's been sold recently and no longer appears   . I DID find a couple of the other ships, but they weren't the same postcard.

DOH ... just worked out your BIG clue .

    Hi all,

Not much to report in terms of progress as there has been a lot of waiting for paint to dry recently. I've attached a couple of progress pics to keep you know who happy though. After painting the exterior of the hull white, I removed it from the building board and attached the gunwale plank inboard before masking up and painting the interior yellow ochre. The yellow extends also to a band along the gunwale on the exterior. I was surprised at just how light the boat was when I removed it from the building board - it was like handling a piece of paper! In between coats of paint I marked out the pattern for the cap rail and cut this from a sheet of boxwood. I've also begun preparing the thwarts.

Here are a few pics as she stands at the moment. There was a tiny bit of bleed under the masking tape that still needs to be touched up, and then a coat of clear matte finish to take the gloss off of the yellow ochre.

I agree  with Philo426 about mindset. I recall making plastic boats and planes as a kid and my attention span was extremely limited....I could never have contemplated a wooden kit build. I find now at the age of 58 that part of the fun of my first wooden build is in applying extreme patience and focus.

There is a certain masochistic pleasure in leaving the clamps on overnight so that first thing in the morning you can take them off and see that you have made one more step towards completion...as a kid I could NEVER do that.

I have read in this fantastic site that you should treat each step as a project in itself....in that way you are constantly having a sense of achievment - even over the tiniest detail such as carving the handle on an oar and realising, my goodness, that actually looks realistic !

So, what is entry level ? I have been very well served with the Midwest Boston Whitehall Tender with fantastic instructions for everything except the details of planking. I found wonderful information about planking in MSW but I couldnt apply it 100% to my situation. And that has been frustrating.

Now that I have almost finished I have discovered the Group Build Project and wish I had started with that....in fact I am thinking of buying the Longboat. What the beginner needs is the confidence that comes from watching his peers build the same boat and face the same challenges and share their ideas (and frustrations).Picking up amazing tips and suggestions and encouragement on the way

and isnt that what MSW is all about ?  If I had to build my boat in isolation I reckon I would have given up half way throught the planking !

    thanks to you all !
    Simon
