    Mast prep continued. Cheeks area flattened and iron bands installed (they're made of paper)

    I'm prepping the masts so I can continue building them up. I flattened the parts where the cheeks and fish will be glued.

    While I'm proud of my work on the ship's pump, but I have to say, compared to many of your builds, mine looks like a cartoon version. I'm always amazed at the precision and quality of most of your work.

    Installed the pump. A few details left but they can be added even though it's glued to the deck.

    Pump assembly "dry" fitted to the deck. I still have some details to go.

    IT GETS VERY STRONG AFTER YOU GET THE HULL PLANKED. BEFORE THAT IT'S LIKE WORKING WITH EGG SHELLS

    Working on the ship's pump. The devil is in the details. At least it works. I drilled holes in the hull to take the extra long pump rods.

    Careful! The whole thing is very fragile at this point. Most of us had to do major re-work after breaking the fragile wood.

    I was completely stumped trying to make the rod components for the ship's pump. I butchered dozens of pieces of metal and finally gave up. Then my savior came to the rescue and made the pair for me. He is Frank McMahon, the ad hoc chair of The Arizona Shipwrights and you must visit his latest build. On this website, go to "Skipjack Kathryn" " based on HAER Drawings. Frank is a master of details and can make anything of wood or metal. His shop is heaven for modelers. Thank you Frank.

    Not too bad, but it's forcing me to clean the whole shipyard. It really needed it. I had a habit of just throwing scraps on the floor while I was focusing on building my ship like a surgeon. From now on I shall drop the scrap into a new waste bucket I brought in. Now I'm cleaning the floor. Ugh!~ glue and paint droppings all over. Two more days work and I will have a pristine shop again.

    My water softener sprung a leak and flooded my shipyard along with everything else. The idiot who installed it didn't put a safety pan under it. Plumber just finished installing a new one and I'm cleaning up my shipyard. It needed it anyway.

    Frank I'm going to challenge you to help me Saturday with some mini metal work.

    I installed the caps on each mast so I can have a point of reference for all the other things that get installed on the mast.

    I'm using my poor man's lathe to taper the lower masts.

    I'm starting to build the fwd and main lower masts. I had months ago prepared the deck to take each mast. Instead of carving the mounting peg that goes into the deck, I drilled and inserted a dowel at the base of each mast. The main mast on the Argus has a large aft rake. The forward is almost vertical.

    The starboard side lids installed five times faster than the port side. I guess practice makes perfect, I'll clean them up and varnish them tomorrow. I fabricated the channels by adding two extra pieces on the under side of each to give me more gluing surface and more holding power for the pins. 1/16 in is too skinny for me to drill and insert a pin.

    I taped on some protective foam sheets so I can lay her on her side when I install the other sides gun port lids. These lids are very strong but why take chances.

    Glued all the port side lids on. When the glue dries I'll varnish them. BTW they are all pinned for strength.

    Well....since it's 118 degrees outside....and I've been fight the big "C" for six months and didn't so much as glue a splinter on the ship...I'm making up for it. Thanks for the nice comment. BTW it feels real good to make progress.

    I lined the inside of the lids with wood matching the inside bulkheads. If the lids were closed the inside gunwale walls would all match. It also serves to reinforce the four glued plank pieces that make up the lid.

    I've installed three gun port lids. I made sure they were in position so if they were closed they would fit snugly into the gun port.
