The Sailor reacted to Timothy Wood in Atlantic 1903 by Timothy Wood - FINISHED - Scale 1/8 = 1' - Half-Hull
Greeting!  All the lifts have been glued, the hull is ready to receive a piece of wood the will allow me to attach the hull to my Wilton Power Arm.  Using the power arm makes the job of carving the hull much easier than if it was attached to a normal vice.  I have added the outline to the backside if the hull.  One step I have given myself an option with is the rudder, I can carve it into the hull or add it later as an addition.

    Cheers,
    Tim

A brace was installed under the quarterdeck level to hold the curve in the transom.

On Christmas day I found that St Nick hadn't sanded and resined the interior of the hull as I had hoped, so it fell to me to do it.  It  was sanded, cleaned, and given a couple of coats of poly resin.  Excess resin was poured into the bilges to fill any nooks and crannies so small parts, dirt, and water would have no where to hide.

A full size paper pattern of the gun ports, moldings, and other such hull details was made.  Care was taken to use the plan to make sure items that were on surfaces curved away on the profile were in their proper place, such as the bridle ports.  As I was cutting out the gunports on the pattern I realized I had formed a gunport lid; I couldn't resist doing them all that way.

Macedonian is a little shorter than Constellation.  Constellation compares in length to the frigate United States so you get a little bit of an idea of the size relation between Macedonian and United States.

The build table was leveled, then the hull placed on it level port and starboard, and with the waterline marks  fore-n-aft at the same height from the table.  A pencil resting on a block of wood cut to the right length was used to mark the waterline.

Approximately every-other station used to make the hull was cut down to scale framing dimensions and reinstalled into the hull.  The reason for this is because the complex shape of the hull with it's tumble-home and counter tumble-home, was trying to flatten out.  These frames are glued into the hull with epoxy mixed with wood dust..  The rest of the interior from the gun deck up, will get framing and ceiling planking to make the hull the proper thickness.

Some idea of the size of the thing - 5 foot from tip-to-tip.

    Next: Fiberglass!

When she raced in the Cup she had a crew of 35! Can you imagine being the bow man on that thing?!! She is in the Caribbean now. Her new owner spent over $1M to restore her. I would love a chance to sail on board. Every year there is a classic wooden boat race in the Carib.

Wow is that a full size ironing board? This is going to be a huge replica. What's her overall length (and height), my calculations give just under 4 feet long? She should make one really impressive display. I also love seeing the non-period and working vessel builds. There are so many interesting vessels out there and this one is a definite keeper.

@ Yves, Nice photo, it really shows the inner beauty of the sail stitching.

Richard, seeing how you taper the mast will be a build highlight--looking forward to learning what you come up with!

    Assembly of the masts.

The two parts of the lower masts. The lower parts are 6mm dowels and the upper parts are 4x4mm walnut.

Fore top and main top are fitted. The top must sit parallel to the waterline when the masts are fitted into locating holes.

And the same procedure with the topmasts.  This time the lower parts have to be sanded to an octagon.

    Ready for painting.

Very nice work, Richard. When you used thread instead of brass wire on the stirrups did you stiffen them or keep them natural? They look good.

No way! After all the work my Pickle sails with two boats.

I‘ve made a little modification on the fore yard stirrups. They are not made from brass wire but the same black thread I used for the footropes.

The gammoning and the lower mast shrouds (fore mast) are rigged.

Hi Floyd, my admiral broke down when she saw the box.
The height of the mast is very impressive but not the problem. Tapering the round timber could be a really tough job.

    Hello,
today a huge box came in. When the rigging of my Pickle is done I‘ll start with the America‘s Cup yacht Endeavour.

The 1/35 scale kit includes laser cutted parts for the deck, keel and frames, limewood and mahogany planking material, brass and wooden fittings, photo etched brass details, cloth, plans, instructions in three languages (Italian, French and English).

Endeavour is a 130-foot (40 m) J-class yacht built for the 1934 America's Cup by Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, Portsmouth Harbour, England. She was built for Sir Thomas Sopwith who used his aviation design expertise to ensure the yacht was the most advanced of its day with a steel hull and mast. She was launched in 1934 and won many races in her first season including against the J's Velsheda and Shamrock V. She failed in her America's Cup challenge against the American defender Rainbow but came closer to lifting the cup than any other until Australia II succeeded in 1983.

    Frames and keel

    Metal parts

Wooden strips for planking and the material for the mast

The deck and the wooden fittings

    The building plans

The Amati kit is really impressive. The wooden parts are of good quality, only the sails are not sewn. Anyway, I can‘t wait laying the keel.

At last the ship's boats have been completed. Believe me, it was a real challenge.

First of all the boat's resin hulls should have been sanded. Otherwise you can have big problems when glueing the cartridge paper for the ribs into the hull. My big awareness...

But the rest was quite easy.

Well, the lauch is very tall and I'll don't fit it until the rigging has been completed.
