Thanks for these kind words and yes I've been lurking here 😉 And it's looking great what you're doing! I'm actually born in the Netherlands a long time ago and somehow ended up in Belgium, love and all that... My kids are going to school here or university so I'm kinda stuck here lol, but Liège is a great place to be stuck 😊 -
Guns. Been busy on the side to try out one gun, to see what paints to use and how it all looked. For the carriage the same red as the bulwarks obviously and for the gun I settled on one thin coat of Tamiya TS30 (my go to 'primer' whenever I do objects that are metal in real) and one thin coat of Revell anthracite matt (number 9) . The latter takes hours to dry so and when it's touch dry I rub the gun with my finger a little bit and the metal primer shows through a little bit. On a carriage and on the boat it looks quite good I think 🙂 I'm starting to like the macro lens 😉

Channels and deadeyes. That kinda finishes the hull 😃 Apart from the retouching that I'll undoubtedly do, but overall quite pleased 😊 Right, all hands on deck then! Guns first now...

Good luck and have fun with it 😁 -
With patience and perseverance I managed to get the metalwork on the bulwarks and deck done. Quite happy with it all 🙂 Started on the guns, well just one for now to see how to do it and what paints etc... I don't know yet if I'll rig the guns, I will probable try and see how that goes.

These open eyebolts and eyebolt rings (for gun rigging) are a bit of a pain in the derrière (excuse me my french) Acrylics on pe doesn't work, so I spray painted them with a black metal primer then assembled them, then burnished them to fix the places where the primer came off, then installing them on the boat and I'll need to retouch them all when done... There's 70 assemblies in total (kit provides 80) and I'm halfway so I'll get there 😉

If I may quote from "Winfield, Rif. British Warships in the Age of Sail, 1714–1792: Design, Construction, Careers and Fates . Pen & Sword Books. Kindle Edition. " (if not, please remove) which says about the Sphinx class: " Guns: UD 20 x 9pdrs; QD (from 1794) 4 x 12pdr carronades; Fc (from 1794) 2 x 12pdr carronades. Daphne and Ariadne were re-established in early 1793 with 2 x 4pdrs on QD and 2 x 4pdrs on Fc in lieu of carronades, and re-rated as 24-gun ships " Coppering was done in 1781 btw.

I don't think building up the bulwarks at the quarter deck will be that hard, thing that'd worry my is the decorations. Can't leave them where they are imho.

Looking at the Speedy instructions, the horseshoe and fish plates are omitted and the rudder hinges go over the copper plating. So that's what I would do (and will when I'll do the Sphinx 😉 ) (Edit... I noticed that on the Indy, the plates and and hinges all go on top of the copper plating, so I guess it's any way you want...)

advancing steadily. For the blue I used AK Imperial Blue, I liked the name, not really convinced about the color or maybe I have to get used to it.

Wales attached and painted black and now busy painting white below the waterline. Did use a little bit of filler, but wanted to maintain the "planky" look as well, if that makes sense lol. Can't wait to get the tape off though, that's always stressing me 😬

Major milestone! Finished second planking 🙂 and quite happy with it tbh. It's smooth, lovely curves, no big gaps anywhere. I haven't used any filler so far and wondering if I'll need to, we'll see. I'm also happy with the red color I chose for the inside bulwarks, it's a period pigment 😉 Carmine red from AK interactive. I know what you're saying that carmine wasn't available to the British at that time, but Mr. King, the ship's builder was heavily involved with smuggling (that's a fact) so any color is justifiable 😉

Second planking is coming along nicely, rather happy with it so far. Took me a while to get into the groove of glueing with CA, but once I felt comfortable with that it was smooth sailing 😉 It's sandpaper and scrapers now and more of that when the keel will be on.

Planking the stern and wow, the macro lens is a harsh mistress! I'm loving the pear wood though, so will start second planking today 😊

First planking done, well apart from the emergency repair on the deadwood. (Note to self, easy with the Dremel) But overall quite pleased. Some sanding to be done still, not sure I need filler... We'll see. The lines are just gorgeous, it's difficult to see on a photo, you gotta trust me on that 😉

Thanks. It doesn't have a brand name on it, it's just a heavily overpriced lump of aluminium that gets hot 😉

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
