Making some steady progress. The instructions say to soak the plywood pieces for the stern counter and side bulwark patterns, shape them on the hull and let them dry there. I tried, but it somehow didn't work for me the way I imagined. So I fired up my old bending iron to shaped the pieces with that. I'm also using it now for the first planking. Trying to do it as good as possible, as an exercise for the second planking and I know that thinking that mistakes can be corrected in later stages is maybe not a brilliant idea.

Another Flirt??? Yes another one 😉 Well I hope at least... I wanted a good quality kit, not too big and enough of a challenge and after having read so many good things about Vanguard Models I just thought a Flirt would be perfect 🙂 It arrived today and when I opened it and saw the super quality parts and wood I couldn't help myself and started immediately. The first steps went so easily, it all fitted perfectly together, a bit like a Tamiya kit (I mean that as a compliment 😉 ) I will try to do exactly what Chris tells me to, I am sure he knows better than me. Well mostly, my ocd obliged me to make the captain's cabin door shut... A few quick pics with my phone, I'll grab my Nikon another day if building goes well.

Thanks! In shipbuilding I've done the "Half Moon" by Billing Boats a long time ago. Apart from that I have build a few violins from scratch.

Finished with it, not really happy with it tbh, I think mainly cause I couldn't find the right flat white colour. I used Humbrol 34 which was too thick for this scale and diluted it didn't cover. But anyway, it floats 😉 On to a wooden ship now 😃 Vanguard Models for sure, dunno yet which one, Flirt probably... or Sphinx? 😬

Hey, thanks for answering. I assume it does yes if I order it directly from Vanguard, but to avoid tax and duty issues I was looking to order it somewhere in the EU 🙂 and on that German site mentioned they only ship it with German instructions.

Really looking nice! I am thinking of doing this one as well, but I don't want the instructions in German 😬

Not bad at all 😃 I can't play myself, but a friend tried it and was pleased. Or she was just being polite... -

Very nice work! -
This is how I got into woodworking. Had the wish from a young age already to make violins, and one day I just gave it a go. This pic is the 4th violin I made, from scratch, just some drawings and some wood.

Started this before I joined, so no early pics. It's new tooling from 2023, good fit, nice and crisp details. Instructions aren't very good I believe, but maybe I am spoiled with Tamiya instruction quality. Scale is too small for me ( at my age 😬 ) but I did somehow manage to do the pe parts

Thank you all. I'll now try to upload some pics for some sort of portfolio, hoping I'll do it correctly, in the right places and with the right naming 😊😉

Thanks for having me 🙂 I've been browsing this forum for a while and admired your work and am on the verge of starting a new build and will probably need your advice at times. Years ago I've made the Billing Boats "Half Moon" and to me it looked great. I've no pics though and it's not there anymore... I've been making plastic models of about everything all my life and did some woodworking as well and will probably go and get an Occre "Beagle" or "Mercedes" very soon, unless someone convinces me to do something else 😄 Oh and currently doing the Titanic from HobbyBoss in a tiny scale, 1/700 😬 Walter.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
