marktiedens got a reaction from mtaylor in Royal William by pirozzi - FINISHED - Euromodels - 1/70
Hi Vince - other than ripping everything off & starting over, maybe you could drill some holes down through the rails close to the stem & run the ropes through them. It may give the appearance of running behind them.

I have placed the timbers between the rails on the starboard side. I did not use the metal strips supplied in the kit, although they are fine. I made some decorative strips with wood from my stash and milled out the center by hand. I think they look more like the drawings and of other high quality models I have seen around.
I found another blunder after placing some of the timbers at the forward end of the rails. When I bent the outward curves into the rails, I tried to match the drawings, and think I came pretty close, BUT, the stem is too thick and too high as provided in the kit. There is no room for the gammoning ropes to fit in between the inside of the lower rails and the stem. I would have to have known to shave the thickness of the stem piece, or cut it way down from the top beforehand. In looking at some scratch built models, the stem piece is cut way lower from the top to allow the ropes to run between. Nowhere in the plans does this seem obvious, but someone smarter than me would probably catch this. Anyway, if you are following this log, you can avoid this by fixing it before placing the lower head rails. I will have to run the gammoning outside the rails at the lower end and then feed them up inside to the bowsprit. I have seen other ships of the period do this, but not the RW.

Placed the gratings inside the head rails. As was already pointed out, they are lower than the drawings show because the curvature of the upper head rails is a little too low. I am however not too disturbed by this. Since my build log seems to be ahead of the others, I am the one who will make some mistakes for others to benefit. That is why build logs are so important, and one of the reasons I stick my neck out and publish my work for others to see.

Michael - I figured that the railings would be a pain to do after rigging the shrouds - that`s why I did them beforehand. I was just really careful not to mess them up . You are doing a marvelous job - much more detailed than mine.

Hello Everyone, how's things going? Thanks to all for your comments and likes.
Well not a lot to report on, certainly not as much as I wanted to have done. I have the starboard side now complete with filler blocks, the initial filling has been done and one coat of primer (gesso).
I am now waiting for things to dry then a little more filling and another coat of gesso then the planking can start.
I probably would have started planking now but looking at the pictures I decided another round of filling is not going to hurt and it is easy sanding compared to what I have just been through.
With another 2 - 3 hours yet to finish off the hull I will have about 45 hours into this part of the build. I would like to say I enjoyed every minute of it but then I would have a nose I could use for a main mast
It's Thirsty Thursday.....be happy

Update....
today started with the lower davit-bearings. There will be 10 boat stations on each side, calling for 40 turnable (360°) davits in total. The davits will be looking like prototype one shown in my post # 1124, slightly modified.
The lower bearings I intend to glue against the promenade deck L- rail that already is present for mounting the railing to. The upper double-bearings shall be fastened to the brass framing of the boats deck....., reference is taken to enclosed scetch....

Well,I decided to re-do those knees to better match the edge of the deck. Not to difficult - the old ones just popped right off. I think it looks a little better.

Are the original authors of the drawing still available through Euromodel? Maybe Euromodel could contact them & ask what it is.

With my limited knowledge of rigging, I am seeking some help/ guidance on the rigging of the Main Mast of the Royal William. The drawing for the total ship contains so much detail but here goes. I am gathering together a mass of general detail to put into a 'Resource File' that will be available to all.
The topsail yard is attached via what I would call a normal parrel (some spell it parral) and I am OK with that. It can be easily seen in one of the attached drawings. These were in use until the late 18C. In the early 19C, iron parrels came into use.
The main yard from the drawing appears to be attached with a truss pendant ? (shown in blue) but there is an odd-shaped 'something' (shown in orange). Can anybody throw light on what this shaped 'thingy' might be ?
Thanks for reading this and your possible help.

It looks like someone put a guitar pick in the rigging... I'm wondering it's just not a mistake in the drawing like someone forgot to fill in that area.

Mark - it sures does but it appears on both the Foremast and the Main Mast. Not too good on the guitar but guess I will continue to play my own song !!!
Suspect it must be some sort of tensioning block ???

Mark - you could be correct since I have enlarged that portion of the drawing by about 400%; sensible suggestion because it is just so odd.

Pete - maybe it is meant to be an arrow pointing to the truss pendant knot.

Another small update - after tweaking that lower deck a little more,I glued it down. I had some nice brass moulding left over from a previous build,so I formed it to fit the edge of the deck & glued it on. Then I decided to make some small knees to go under the rear edge of the deck at the top of the columns. they are simply 2x5 walnut with a radius filed in them & painted gold to match the columns. They are shown on the plans, but are not part of the castings. After clamping the fascia in place the lower railings line up nicely with the outer edge of the moulding.

Update....
I am having some trouble with my digital camera, the additional memory chip is not accepted any more, and I do`nt know why. So the camera`s regular built in memory capacity only lasts for 4 pics. At least that still works. Will need to look out for a new camera after so many years and thousands of pics done with it...
except for the last piece of railing (was about 25 cm too short of material) I have now the railings on the promenade deck.
The forward rounded pieces were tricky, because of the outcuts for two stairs and the walkway. The top handrails are made from 1 x 1 mm brass U-profile and glued on with CA. I intend to put a thin strip of mahagony 0,6 x 1,5 mm on the upper side of the handrails later on.
I`m most pleased and happy that the oversstressed stb. side shrouds needed not be redone ! (recent accident)
with a little trick they could still be spaned properly, a piece of a 1mm diam. round pin was shoved under the shroud wires on top of the spreader plate, before they round the mast. Now there is only one starbord backstay to be redone.
Nils
the painting of the railings is momentary only in those areas where there is not so good accsess at a later stage
refastening of the shrouds by means of a horizontal steel pin on the spreader platform
