CA glue and metal fittings
cdogg replied to cdogg's topic in Metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings
I grabbed some slower drying CA that is thicker and it works great. Seems I was using the ultra fast water type, lesson learned for me!! -
Brian, it's been fun so far! The planking will be new for me so have my sanity so far!

Well, I last night I started the front bulkheads. I know this has been asked a thousand times but anyone have any great ideas to get these guys leveled? I have been filing away at the top but I think I am better off widing the notch where they attach to the keel. Thanks!

I bought a blue bottle of $2 acrylic from Michaels, I forget the name, but I was going to use it to paint something else and it turned out great on the wood so I put it on the boat. thanks!

Nice job. Question, what was the white gloss you mentioned? Is it sealer, white paint, then gloss polyurethane? Or white poly? I would like to get a finish like that for a future build. I'm still trying to figure the paint thing out. Both boats are looking cool and different, like from two different time periods?

Yes, the time has come for me to temporarily abandon my beloved Midwest Boats and seek a more intermediate ship to build. Alas, the Corel Scotland has been on my list for quite some time and I decided last night to start it up. Looks like all the parts and there and in good shape. Started out with the keel and frame, will be busting out the exacto and the mini chisels tonight. Can't wait to get this ship started!!!

Keep up the great work David! I learned this hobby takes a ton of time and patience, but the end result is a ship display that lasts a lifetime!

Great job on the computers shots! I always wondered how deep the fish hatches went. I know that in the kit the keel cuts right down the middle of the cockpit, I think reinforcing the sides with some wood to the keel will let you gut the top of the keel so you can make a open cockpit? I am working on the same boat right now, more or less learning as I go.

Also, I somehow lost my samson post and my hatch cover. The investigation currently has two main suspects, a 4 year old child and a six month old dog. Despite the criminal activity in my shipyard, the Admiral still places blame on me for not putting the boat parts away. How dare she! You can see I had to use a different cut of Mahogany for the hatch cover. Also, I am changing the back end, the straight board isn't going to do it, but it worked nice as a placing template for the railing. I still need to do a touch up to the water line as well. My advice for painting is make sure to thin the acrylic, my 80th mistake with this build. I had to redo almost the whole thing because the acrylic dried and it looked like the moon surface. I repainted the hull and did 3/4 paint and 1/4 thinner and it did wonders.

Dave, I am a static boat guy but would like to make an RC boat in the future. Hope you enjoy MSW and hopefully yourself and Nigel can help me out when I have RC boat questions. Welcome!

Thanks all. I added two more layers on thinned paint last night, looks way better than the original coats. The original acrylic was too thick. Going for the rudder tonight to finish off the hull, I have an idea to spice it up, will post some pics. Got the mast done, hopefully I will get some time this weekend to get it to the finishing stage.

In terms of instructions, I like Corel. I agree with Andy, you certainly can buy one of the kits you mentioned, but it may make the build easier once you beat up on a smaller kit to get your basic skills tested and tried. Do both at the same time, it will make things much more enjoyable and less frustrating in my opinion. Check out the Model Shipways boats, ton of people here have experience with them and also the guy who designed some of them runs this site.

The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
