Steel wool & vinegar is a very old staining technique, sometimes called "ebonizing." It works with the tannins in hardwoods. There is not enough tannin in any softwood to do a respectable job, but you can add tannin to the wood with tea.  What I originally saw was vinegar with steel rusting in it applied to walnut without any tea.  It immediately turned black with brown overtones.

What you need to do is make up some rusty vinegar, the rustier the better, a jar of tea and some scrap woods of different types.  Experiment with and without tea and see what happens.  If you look on the web for weathering wood, ebonizing wood, ageing wood, you will see many different techniques, any one of which may or may not give you the color you want.  The only way is to experiment to find your own results.  the only thing lost is a little scrap wood and less time than this thread has taken.

Actually, the CORRECT way to tie a Ratline is to EYE SPLICE the two outer ones, and use Clove Hitches for the inner shrouds. The pics below show how I did them on my Norfolk Sloop :

The "Cow Hitch" (I can't remember if that's the correct name for this knot) is an alternative that looks much neater than a Clove Hitch for the two outer ones, as Janos mentioned. Here's how to tie them :

Note the tails of the Cow Hitches are both on the lower part of each knot, meaning that the two knots are mirrors of each other.

With every boat I build, there comes a time, when the hull and deck are finished and I’m starting on the cabin and deck furniture. At that time I start thinking of the next build.  The new boat takes over and consumes all my free time.  I get the plans and start doing the research and all work on the present build stops.  But after a while the new boat slowly moves into the background and I know I have to finish the present build before I start the new or I would never finish any of my builds.  That’s where I am on the Hoga.  Now to get back to building.  Here are the latest pictures.

Still wondering about which to buy?  In industry we were told, "Buy 25% more capacity than you think you will need and you will find you use it all."  It's always bad to buy a machine and find out it won't do quite enough.

Model engineering is one of my other hobbies Bob and when folks ask what machine to get on any of the other forums I frequent, the answer is always the same: "buy the biggest machine you can afford/have space for" and "you can do small work on large machines but you can't do large work on small ones!"

I have quite a large mill in the garage but if I was after something smaller for model boat building I personally wouldn't go for anything smaller than the two I linked.
In fact I think the specs make them almost ideal for the job provided you have the budget and space for one.

The gibbs on the X-Y are adjustable, like ane good machine should be.  As for the handles to move the table you have to turn it a few degrees before the table moves but I see that on expensive machines too.

To make the quarter knees, I drew the shape onto some strip wood, which was actually left over laser cut sheet that came in the kit. I cut each one out in the jig saw, then got them to the final shape with a round file and some sand paper. I trimmed the thin ends so they were all the same length. Here is the strip before cutting:

And here are the quarter knees before staining.

After I stained them, I glued each one in place and here is the result, along with the glued in thole pins, which have not been stained yet:

I attached the pintle an gudgeon to the rudder by gluing them in place, then drilling holes into the rudder through their holes and gluing in nails that were mostly just heads. I then stained the tiller and did some touch up paint on the rudder.

To attach the rudder to the hull, I put the pintle and gudgeon that are attached to hull on the corresponding rudder parts, then clamped the rudder to the hull as shown here. This let me drill the holes into the hull through those parts and add the nail heads, after gluing them in place.

I then attached the tiller by pushing a brass rod through the two tiller brackets and the rudder head. I touched up the paint on the brackets and the hull parts, and here is how it came out:
