Great progress on your Syren.  You definitely had some hurdles to overcome with regards to the inferior materials you had to start with.   Keep up the good work.

it's too bad there aren't to be any windows along the sides of the hull.........shame to obscure such wonderful work     I kinda get the dust thing.......you don't want that going on,  but what about the constant jarring and moving the hull around?   it could cause something to come loose.   closing the stern at this time may put you at a disadvantage.

Manage to spend some quality time in the workshop. Planking the inside is done to the level of the lower deck.

The guide lines for the treenails is marked, next is drilling the holes and do the treenails.

In the meantime I planed to do something different for the deck beams. I did a two timber deck beam with a table and lipped scarph.

The one on the right is glued and with the black paper. It came out better then I was expecting for a first try. Now the problem is that the plans are made to use a constant thickness beam which is not the case of this one.

Any advice on how to compensate for this? In the case of the lower left and upper right beam arm it must be shorter then on the plans and the other two it must be bigger... I could not find an example of a two timber beam on a model (found several examples of a three timber beams though). As for this one the cuts for the beam arms and carling will "cut" the scarph of the beam.

    Any advice is welcome...

    Hi

This was waiting for me when I arrived home yesterday, finally I will be able o keep things squared.

As for the black paper on the frames, the double frames they are sturdy enough ( if the one I built can be used as an example) the simple ones might be a ploblem. I used the paper because I read somewhere that they used tar or pitch on the frame joints, but now I can't find it, will have to go through the books again...

Interesting.   Why would a established kit manufacture use such poor quality plywood in the first place.?  Surely, there can not be that much difference in price. The other wood in the Kit is very good.  I guess I had better give them a call too.

Well, it was a good lesson....to slow down and plan ahead better. I sometimes get on a roll and hate to slow down. Bad habit it ship building.

    Some more content pictures:

    Some photo etched brass parts:

I organized the blocks, deadeyes, and bulls eyes in these small containers:

For the wood strips, I used these plastic golf bag tubes that I got from my father. I had originally planned to use these to organize all the extra wood strips I had in the workshop, but I had to go to something that could handle more strips, which you can see in the picture after this one. I was pretty amazed that the strips just in this kit filled up these tubes.

What I use now to organize my wood supply in the shop:

bbrockel reacted to Engineer57 in USF Essex by Engineer57 - Model Shipways - Scale 1:76.8 - As built
USF Essex kit build – I spent a while reading on Model Ship World (MSW) to understand the status of this kit since it had a lot of issues when it first came out.  When Model Expo offered their incentive in Sept 2015 (50% off and then if you finish the kit within one year and send them 4 pictures of the completed kit they will offer store credit for the complete cost of the kit, so essentially you get it for free) I decided to jump in.  I had been eyeing an Admiralty model anyway and that tipped the scales.

As I noted in my Introduction posting I have been building models for a long time.  I never seriously tried a wooden ship model before so I am new to this specialty.  I plan to use the kit materials, not replacing the wood with other types unless I run into a very good reason to do so.  Since most of the Essex is painted and I do not want to spend the extra money it does not seem necessary to substitute.  That said, if I have other material in my shop that can be used for some detail or extra feature I will use it.

Please note that I will eventually post what I have been doing, but I may not always check this site as frequently as some of you appear to do.  I will gladly answer questions and I am sure I will have lots myself.  If I do not respond to your post right away, please do not take it as lack of interest or that I am ignoring you.  I don’t do social media because it eats up a lot of time I would rather spend doing other things.  I am not retired yet so when I have time to build I will be doing that versus posting. But I will be glad to share with this community since it is helping me so much.

    Sincerely,
    Engineer57

Whoa!  Slow down, I haven't got mine outta the box after two years. The admiral is in charge of renting her wanna be b&b spare rooms, and dry docks obviously don't pay well.
Anywho, pulling chair up and enjoying the show.

I started the TRITON cross section build as a first step toward scratch building.  Or as they call it here the "Dark Side".  The plans are very easy to follow, crisp and clean.  It has been a pretty steep learning curve for me.  Going from having most of the parts laser cut to having to cut and shape each piece myself.  Had some set backs but for the most part, progress has been in the forward direction.  I have postd a few pics with descriptions to cover my progress to date.
