OK, I did corrections with the help of the Naturalist market manager from Swaroski Optics which is actually in Costa Rica.

Ratio from the spotting scope are even higher than previously and photos have been rearranged by lens size.

As we can see, the difference between a Telephoto of 200 mm  and a spotting scope can be quite big!

Today I did some other test in macrophotography with telephoto zoom lenses and 1 spotting scope. The subject is a Canadian 2 dollars photographed at 2,5 meters. The main objective was to see what happens with  two 2X Canon extender behind a lens.

    Test are done with : -200, 300, 600mm lens alone, with one 2X and 2  2X
-20- 60X 65mm spotting scope alone and with one 2X

Ratio looks like OK but there is a difference between lens and spotting scope.
Lens 2400mm look like smaller than spotting scope at 1500mm. I do not know how they did the conversion in mm with the spotting scope.

600mm lens is from Sigma, and extender are from Canon. I did not buy a teleconverter from Sigma because it is not clear if it will works; but with a teleconverter from Canon it does work, but nobody wants to tell you this. All the lens have a good autofocus with 1 extender but it is not very good with 2. If autofocus is done when with 1 teleconverter, adding the second one does not disturb the autofocus.

I just wanted to show an extreme, in fact the remedy is easy just back up to take the photo.

    Major update for Vossiewulf:

just came back from LeeValley and got a flushing chisel blade, PM-V11 steel, a new product which is almost the perfect  blank for the next knife. As for the others, the blade will be regrind in a V shape and I will add a handle.

I thought I would use a hand plane  blade and  cut it in 2 parts, but this solution will be faster. Hand plane blade are too thick. I did take some hand plane in my hands and I was surprise to see how heavy they were.

    druxey,
I know I could straighten a line in e.g. Adobe Photoshop, but it would diminish the quality of the image, and reate other - maybe not immediately apperent - distortions. I am not pro image manipulation, in fact I am against it, but that is personal as is the reason behind that. To get the best image as a source, i.e. before any manipulation, will make the end result better too, That is quite simple to say, but to accomplish ... another story. That's why I like Gaetan's build log, both model wise, as photographic wise, he delivers a wealth of information, and throws up questions I wouldn't think of otherwise

Of course not, it depends of the lens. In this case, this is the lens of the small action camera Yi 4K which has a wide angle lens of 155 degrees with distortion. This do not necessary means it is a cheap lens even if it is really but it shows a very clear example of what not to do.

In the category of the wide angle lens, there are lens with minimal distortion. This meaning a straight line will stay straight and will not curve. The other category is the fish eye. This kind of lens is not interesting for us because this kind of lens like to create artistic curves.
I have never tried a tilt and shift lens but I often use a wide angle lens with minimal distortion and what is also interesting with that lens is that you can be very close to the subject. Here is an example: the camera was at the opposite of the gallery but stuck on it.

first photo :  2 photos of a 74 guns at 1/24 scale, the only difference is the date: 1 photos is dated 2008 and one 2019.

second photo: did I really shaped the closest deck beam  with a circle arc so big?  Not really, it is  a lens deformation because  the lens is too close to the deck beam.

I think I'm just fortunate: The "camera" on my phone crashed irrepairable. So I just upgraded my DSLR.

P.s. Phones aren't smart. At present a phone is just a microcomputer with voip, and some other hardware like a built in camera (webcam like)

I think it's because most use a smartphone or (as in my case) I have a camera that I've had for years and am too cheap to upgrade.  I note that many more people are now hanging backdrops behind their models and are using what appears to be better lighting so maybe your posts are rubbing off.

    Pat,

Model Ship Building is multi disciplinary; and photography should be part of it. Unfortunately, this is not a very popular subject in this forum!

About photography, 1 question is often asked; what makes better photography? Smartphone or camera? Smartphone can give very nice photo.
Here is the simplest way to understand the answer: If I take the same photo with both and print with the same level of detail. Smartphone will get an 8 by 12 inches photo and the camera will give a poster.

    Hi Mark.

Both knives are made of different kind of steel, the left one from North Bay Forge is made of steel tool W1 and the one to the right with the handle made by vossiewulf is made from  steel hardened to Rc 62 and this steel is  cryogenically treated and the address is:

    http://www.hocktools.com/products/knives.html

The knife from Hocktools has a better steel than the other and it will hold his edge longer.

Both knives are grinded the same way in a V shape which is the most effective shape, to cut just like a razor. The down side of this V shape is fragility. The ultimate knife, to my understanding would be made of Lee Valley steel  PM-V11 with a V shape sharpened with water stone and finish with a leather belt.

The last serie of photos are taken by a YI 4K action camera and the fix lens has a very good depth of field, and another reason why the depth of field  is depth is simply because it is 8 feet deep. There is also the model YI 4K+ which in addition in video mode 60 fps instead of 30.

Another interesting fact from the shape of the handles, there is a recess  to  support  the index or the thumb, very effective.

At first sight, having  to choose a very good knife  for model ship making is a very easy thing, at least, this is what I thought when I bought my first Exacto. In the last months,  I learned that this subject is much larger. The shape of the handle, the kind of steel + carbon, the profile of the blade, just to name a few. In addition to this, sharpening is another domain difficult to master from water stones to leather. In fact, it is a good thing I shared my thoughts on this forum because Vossiewulf helped me a lot to understand what is a good knife and what is a good blade made of. This week, to put the cherry on the sundae, I received a very beautiful gift; 1 knife from North Bay forge, and another one made by the master himself. There are a lot of interesting features like aniline dye to enhance the color of wood, the finish is CA glue. Who could have thing to this? surely not me. the choice of steel for the blade and to top  all this the knife is balance.

First try in another subject with an action camera; a small camera, go pro style. I had 3 small webcam but I realized that they worked only with Windows 7. This kind of camera is mainly use for video, but it can take photos also. It is about 1,5 by 2,5inches. The fun thing is that it will be easy to insert it in the entrails of the model ship, also we can see what is the camera is seeing through the phone.

What will be the next step? Every time I take a photo inside the model ship, it is difficult to level the camera, so the next thing I will try will be a 3 axis gimbal stabilizer. This little gadget can automatically align the camera in the 3 axis.

Keeping details private is fine, Good Even. In a few sales listings that I've done (other sties) I've stated "first I'll take it" is the winner. I've then stated that if you pm or email me that when I get see that email/pm I'll check in the thread and if not one has already posted an "I'll take it" then I'll post one (without name) and that will end the sale. On another site right now there are two long standings members upset and making postings how it was their purchase and who was the winner of the deal.

Good Luck to everyone in dealings like this.

Another thing that might be added to the above is something like
-- first posted I'll take it in the thread --  helps to stop some problems early on. I've seen some folks get real mad as to who really bought it because of an email or pm -- again posting on the thread I'll take it --  Good Thing.
-- Returns  --- Yes or No

Something for the site and reference -- leave the item that was sold and the price that it was sold for listed in the thread. A lot of items don't sell very often and having an type of price guide line is better than nothing.

My additional thoughts - ok, ideas from other sites I'm on.

Well going to jump in on this one and tell a little story and share a few pics. I"m not posting a few pics off the outsides of the complete ship, HMS Warrior. I will another day if you want.
Time 2004 my wife and I went to Paris, France and saw a lot of stuff. Next stop was London where we rented a car and headed South to Portsmouth. Made a large mistake. We were hungry. Saw a Little Chef and thought can't be that bad, well it turned the stomach bad, more on that later. Checked into our B&B on Portsmouth Point. Nice Place, nice people. Had a morning appointment to tour the inside on the HMS Victory one on one with a guide. Special extra cost, yes. At that time you could not take pics inside or on the HMS Victory. This one on one tour allowed it as long as they were personal use pics.
Ok, back to the HMS Warrior part. Got our folding bikes out of the car biked over to the docks and such. Took a few pics of the HMS Warrior and HMS Victory. Went to the shop saw the HMS Warrior model that William Mowell had made. Super nice to see after you have read and reviewed his book, "Building a Working Model Warship". Like the real thing, working steam engines and such. Really need to review the book. I have not read it in around ten years of course. Well we saw a fish and chips store and got some and sat down at the docks to eat and look at the ships, etc. Well got to be time to head back and on the way back my wife got sick. A "light" case of food poisoning, we think. She was sitting and throwing till around 3:00 in the morning. I started in around 2:00 in the morning. Of course this canceled the HMS Victory tour that was very important to me. After we got up later that day we toured the HMS Warrior where the diesel fumes did not set well. Finally did get to take a regular tour of the HMS Victory towards the end of the day. After which we drove up to London for a few days. Got to see a lot of great ship models there also.
Any rate on with the picture show. If this is to much in your build thread let me know and I'll take it down.
