  1. Hi Laxet Regarding the ladders I have installed one either side. Directly opposite each other Ditto with the sea steps Regards Ken
  2. Hi Phil I am working on the Niagara which has a painted hull I measured the position of the waterline off the plans and then used Tamiya masking tape top and bottom to define the waterline And then painted it in Hope this helps Regards Ken
  3. Hi Larry I am with Alistair Wait until the entire deck planking is complete Regards Ken
  4. Hi Harbm Undersize or oversize frames happens to all of us Michaels advise is spot on. Much easier and quicker than trying to get one frame from the supplier Regards Ken
  5. Hi Leroy Firstly , welcome to MSW Be sure to start a build log for your Bluenose To answer your question Definitely wood glue Use a small brush or old scalpel blade to apply it full length Wood glue gives you time to position the plank correctly and you can wipe excess off with with a damp cloth. CA is much less forgiving Giving you little time to make sure you have the plank correctly positioned Also I would worry about the strips bubbling or lifting between the drops you apply Hope this helps regards Ken
  6. Hello Brian I will attempt to answer you first email A kit bash is where you buy a kit and then enhance it By buying better quality fittings and wood for example Scratch is where you start from plans only. Purchase all you components and build the model from " scratch" Cutting everything to size yourself Usually needs a lot more equipment such as planes band saws etc than a kit does Hope that helps Regards Ken
  7. Hi Mike Yes I can. You have to be careful not to split the bulkhead ply. But as you said pre drilling a hole could help Regards Ken
  8. Hi Mike I use map pins And push them into the bulkhead adjacent to the plank I am gluing The pins I use have a plastic head about 6mm in diameter which holds the plank until the glue dries Hope that helps Regards Ken
  9. Hi Richard Welcome to MSW Local retailers and distributors tend to be expensive I would look at Caldercraft/Jotika in the UK Generally the freight cost is offset by not having to pay their VAT or our GST Regards Ken
  10. Hello Mate The tops of the bulkheads and the centre keel need to be level. Otherwise it will play havoc when you lay the deck Don't worry to much about opening up the bulkhead slots. When you come to glue them in use something like Lego blocks to hold them square while the glue dries Regards. Ken
  11. Hi Welcome to the Niagara Club I am sure we will all watch , help and encourage as needed Regards Ken
  12. Hi Hamilton I don't know the answer to your question re ME and what they stock But the cost of importing and holding stocks and supplying service for multiple kit ranges would be significant You should look at sourcing these kits for the UK Freight from the UK to Canada would only take a few days. It works for us here in Australia Regards Ken
  13. Brian I used 1/32 x 4/32 strips Hope that helps Regards Ken
  14. Hi Brad Welcome to MSW. It would be interesting to know which two ships you are currently building Regards Ken
  15. Hello BL I think they tie back to the belaying pin rack situated in the bow Let me know what you think If you haven't already it would be a good idea if you started a build log so we can all watch, help and encourage Regards Ken
  16. Hi Larry I am pleased the primer idea worked for you Regards Ken
  17. Hi Larry Good work and a good idea about a coat of paint I use a flat white undercoat first. That tends to show up any highs and lows Regards Ken
  18. Bob One more thing If you have a look at my build US Brig Niagara by Kenr You can see some pictures which illustrate what I mean about building the deck around the coamings Ken
  19. Hi Bob With the deck fittings I built in the supports and then installed the coamings. Then I cut the deck planks to size around the coamings rather than putting the coamings on a complete finished deck I hope that makes sense The pins I used where map pins which have a good sized plastic head So you can push them into the bulkheads along side the planks and the head holds the plank in place If you start with a centre plank then you can work either side giving the glue time to dry Ken
  20. Hi Bob I used a pencil for caulking which looks OK But any sanding you have to do rubs it off to some degree I think that would be even more so with charcoal. And you are likely to spread the black dust over the deck Regarding glue Definitely use wood glue. It gives you time to position the planks and excess can be wiped off with a damp cloth Also suggest you fit strip wood between the bulkheads where the deck fittings will sit. This will give you are flat allround surface for the deck fittings to sit on Regards Ken
  21. Hi Rich I am truly pleased to see you so excited about your job Particularly after all the time and effort you put into job hunting Enjoy Regards Ken
