  1. Haru To follow Frolick's post if you can take a look at the ESSEX PAPERS book. There is an entire indent of what Her Captain (Edward Prebble) had brought on board as his personal stores as well as what was "provided". You'll probably find similar (records / stores) for most of the era you're researching Sam
  2. For those of you who are interested in the ESSEX rig you'll be happy to hear that Model Expo (Eric) has asked me to switch my focus from the solid hull conversion of PHANTOM and concentrate on the ESSEX rig until completion. So I'll be re-organizing my work bench for the next few days or so and then moving forward with the task at hand. Also take a look at the Kit review thread on ESSEX. There are some updates on the kit components. Sam
  3. To follow up on Eric's post and answer a few questions that I've been receiving. There are some mistakes and format issues that developed at the printers from my original manuscript of the ESSEX manual. Eric and Model Expo being the company that they are have asked me to immediately address these with the printer which I am doing currently. Eric has also asked me to work with the casting people to address some inconsistencies that are occurring with the castings. Be assured we'll get these cleared up ASAP. Sam
  4. USS Take a look at my posts from April 16th in Latest! new kits, tools and Ship Model Goodies. Clarifies (?) why we're in 5/32=1' Sam
  5. Ken For such a small amount of detail you might want to think about having it printed out on a heavy card stock and then just cut it out and paint it as you would if it were photo-etched. Although not the "norm" a run of p/e for just a single item would be cost prohibitive. You may have to think out side of the "box"
  6. Thanks Jax, Let me know about the castings. If the guns stayed round, level of detail maintained on the figure head and your opinion of the galleries (especially). I'm not fishing for compliments, I'm genuinely interested in how everything is received. The three piece gallery assembly was (and still is) a point of conversation between Charles and myself. In presenting them that way I was trying to achieve consistency of appearance for the builder. I felt they were too small to build in place and I didn't just want to layer on blocks of wood and have the builder(s) sand them out. Way to much margin for error. Sam
  7. Jax How's it look?.........LOL Sam
  8. Take a look at Brady's Kedge Anchor as well. He's includes tables of block and line sizes for a number of different class ships. Also the Smithsonian has Chapelles' lines for the OHIO 1820 SOTL in 1/8" scale. Sam
  9. Hank, Forgot to mention it but Proxxon was at the I-HOBBY show in Cleveland last year. They can be reached in your "neck of the woods" - PROX-TECH, Inc 255 Tate Blvd SE POBox 1909 Hickory, NC 28603 phone (828) 326-0326 email: sales@prox-tech.com www.proxxon.com/us
  10. Hank Take a look on YouTube. There are a number of videos on the DB250 Looks interesting. I'm in the market (kind of) for a small lathe as well. Sam
  11. Robboxxx I've got the SF on my shelf (hoping to build one day) I've known of the historical accuracy questions so it will be interesting to see where your research leads you. I've also got the Lusci book. Good luck Sam
  12. Thanks everyone, As far as time of completion - two weeks! LOL! Seriously, I'm usually pretty fast at rigging in comparison to the hull build, but with the added responsibilities of the manual and plans I'm not certain. It will be in 2014 I know that. Just an "observation" - I started the original ESSEX project of the solid hull upgrade in 2007 and will complete the ESSEX POB in 2014. They built the REAL ESSEX in about 10 months in 1798-99 with no power tools or electricity........... And as I've pointed out before - their's floated and had working guns! The one thing that I am debating is process methodology. By that I mean how do I show the steps basically. One of the things I have found "interesting" as I design theses kits is that I have to sometimes (often) forgo the little tricks and shortcuts that we all develop over time and show more fundamental methods of construction. As an example for ESSEX's rig, my own preference is to build the mast and yards in their entirety off the hull, attach as many blocks and lines as I can and then install the mast with this large tangle/spiderweb of lines hanging down and then start to tie them off. It works for me but as a presented method in a manual for the general public probably not so much. So as I said - two weeks.................. Talk soon - Sam
  13. Well I thought I'd put the start of the plans out here and get the thread up and running. I'm still counting out and converting block and line sizes (makes for hours of fun for the whole family) I have to actually do it twice as I'm going to use Chuck's (SyrenModelingCompany) blocks and line but I also have to have the comparable product accounted for from Expo/Shipway as well that will be included in the kit. In addition to the rig I have to draw out and construct the remaining open launches, draw and create the additional anchors and a few other details (ideas) that I have. I'll say it now (although I'm certain I'll say it again) there will be no sail plan. Sam ESSEX RIGGING PLAN 062013.pdf
  14. Richard, Expo is no longer supporting replacement parts for Mamoli kits - only their own. Keep that in mind
  15. Wayne, Nicely done. The technique of "faking in" a sheave is one of my favorites............. Anchor looks good as well Sam
  16. Thanks guys. I'm constantly in search of a red and yellow ochre that I like and keep on coming back to the Admiralty paints. I was looking at the SHERBOURNE (sp?) yesterday and the tones are just right. Sam
  17. Does anybody know where to get Caldercraft Admiralty paints in the States? I emailed JoTika and the USA distributor (Agesofsail.com) they led me to didn't seem to know what I was talking about. Thanks Sam
