popeye the sailor reacted to Paul Salomone in DKM Scharnhorst by Paul Salomone - 1:72nd Scale - German WW2 Battlecruiser
    Good morning all,

Hello Christian and Ben, thanks for looking in. It's always a pleasure to see your posts.

as advised, I have now turned the tables towards the construction of the ship's searchlight installations. There were five of them. For the time being, I shall be working only on the one related to the tower and bridge.

    Here goes:

The master - I produced this a couple of years ago.

A 32mm diameter brass rod in place. Have to turn it to a diameter to 25mm.

    The turning is well underway.

A view from the end. The inside of the search light was drilled off with a 22mm diameter HSS twist drill.

    Ready for cutting off.

The searchlight housing, placed adjacent to a 1:72nd scale figure.

Shall be posting more further on this week.

I'll have to post a picture of what my part storage system looks like.

it starts with a large box,  in which i lined with toilet paper tubes that are cut in half.  the bottles are tall, so they sit in there without too much room to move around.  the tubes are spaced out so the bottles are not crowded.  I haven't labeled them....I started to,  but the contents change with the supply I have of any given thing.....it would be a bother to relabel them.  they are organized......I have a mental idea where everything is.

thanks Eric.......I hope you have one as well      no signs of me slowing down any time soon

A bottle of 5mm blocks? Sounds like meds for a ship modeller to me!

Which reminds me, I need some 5mm deadeyes to solve a 'headache'...

    Btw, great idea.

I went with #3 as well.......although the mixed got me thinking.   #3 down just past the wales, then go to a darker, more brackish color by adding a blackish wash to it,  before the bottom hull color, or copper

Thanks to everyone for looking in and for the great shot in the arm.  This forum is just the greatest place for instruction and encouragement.......because of the people on it.

Still a long way to go...and a lot more things to work around.  But somewhere along the line the time and effort to show progress has been replaced by the satisfaction of getting it (almost) right.

I wish I could be a better barometer for you......she had her share of both......lots of teak though.   then she changed hands a few times and info really becomes cloudy.   I wanted to get another one,  and try to do her as the Portugese ship Ferreira.....nicknamed the Pequena Camisola by her crew........and later turned into a Barquentene  Maria Do Amparo....very few info,  if none at all about these two

    Thanks Popeye!

When I was trying to figure out whether to varnish the cabins or paint them white, I looked at historic photos and paintings. One painting, commissioned by the Ship's owner and painted the year of the launch, had the cabins finished in teak. Then I read a scientific analysis of the paints taken during the restoration
from areas on the cabin that were protected from stripping over the years . The report said the first layer had been white, then subsequent layers consisted of coasts of varnishes, and other coats of white.  So were the cabins originally painted white and then the owner had them stripped back to teak and varnished as in the painting during her first year?  Who knows?!  I gave up and just painted the panels white.

Same thing happened trying to figure out the hatches as well as the combings.  Some photos had them white, some were dark (black or reddish/orange? - I read descriptions of both).

Tons of time spend with magnifier glasses and old photos.

I think that I spend too much time trying to figure out what the ship should look like instead of just building it.  Sometimes I should just make a decision and move on.
    OR drink more!!!

With Frank getting back on his feet and Sjors turning his attention to the Spanish fleet, I thought it would be a good time for a small update with some long promised photos.

The main and fore lower yards have been completed with the exception of the braces and sheets as I would surely entangle myself if those were in place.  The spaghetti all over the deck are those ropes ready to be deployed later.

The main and fore topsail yards have been pinned in place and are ready to be rigged.  We'll set the rigging spiders loose after celebrating the Memorial Day holiday here in the US.

I gotta tell ya that this rigging is a slow process but I haven't had so much fun since........planking......or was it coppering?

I wish that was so John.......then I could get back all the wood Gibbs chewed to splinters,  andI can stop watching all the smaller diameter dowels...the admiral would stop using them for plant stalk stakes!

good to see your back at it......take your time.  it is good to put in missing detail that the kit doesn't have...especially if it's too big to ignore.
there is always a lot of controversary about paint and fitting......and the time period in which they were present.  that's a big problem with pictures......there's never an exact date in which they were taken.   I ran into that big time when I did my revell kit.....I must have three different accounts concerning paint.   I just picked a scheme and went with it.   your doing a fine job......even if your just playing with the sub assemblies for now.   when your ready to work on the big picture........the build will be that much quicker.  go at a steady pace....I know I'm not going anywhere.........I'm sure others aren't either.

Thank you Dirk, Kats, Mark, Popeye, Paul, Jan and "Bones" :-) :-) :-)

I am already wondering, but nobody dares asking about the title of the thread  ;-)

... okokok, before I have to wait too long: dafi, what strange thread title you have ?!?

Once upon a time, the shout from the channels was to be heard "By the Deep 17" meaning a little more than 17 fathoms of water were measured, roundabout 30 meters.

The line used was  ca. 20 to 25 fathoms long (about 36 to 45 meters) and had marks indicating the depth measured. So the shout "By the Mark XX" meant that it was exactely on the mark and "By the Deep XX" meant it to be above the mark. The marks were at  2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 13, 15, 17 und 20 fathoms (after Nares) and had :
2 fathoms leather with 2 stripes, 3 fathoms leather with 3 stripes, 5 fathoms white, 7 fathoms red, 10 fathoms leather with hole 13 fathoms blue, 15 fathoms white, 17 fathoms red und 20 fathoms two knots.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sounding_line

So hastily made the 20 fathom line, fitted marks and lead ...

... and the sound of the falling lead could be heard  :-)
