popeye the sailor got a reaction from trippwj in America by popeye the sailor - FINISHED - Billing Boats - 1:72 scale
well........I'm glad noone looked in yet.......I can give you a double whammy. after the fore sheet was in place, the table isreally starting to look a tangle, with all the stray ropes lying about. I try to keep them coiled, but when I move the ship, they fall off. so.......I decided to do the main shrouds, seeing that the hoops are all done on it.
nowI could swear I saw a picture of her with three shrouds on the main mast. since the main mast has two steps to it, I decided to go with it.
the first shroud rigged
all rigged
then I did the port side
looks pretty cool to see them on there finally
when I'm done with the fore sheet, I will tie them and then start tying all the others.

ya gotta laugh.....the best part is.......it was 100% correctable it started like this.....it began with drilling the holes for the blocks and rigging........after I cut it to length, of course.
when the blocks and the peak halyard line was rigged, I laid it on the sheet. I would have taken the picture on my desk, but you wouldn't see it too good.
At the bottom of the outer corner, I attached blocks that I took from the deck. this is the corner that is furthest from the mast. note the way the pleats run.........I lashed it on........
good thing I used white glue for the end ties. I quickly undid it and fixed it
when this dried enough, it was time to rig it up....throat halyard first
then the peak halyard
here is a shot of both gaffs
see......no harm, no foul. I have no problem posting my mistakes.......if one person sees it and learns from it........then I did good by doing it. glad I made your day Daniel

Running rigging update.
The foremast is now complete, now for the mainmast. This should be a bit easier now that I more or less understand what all the ropes do!
Cheers.

Ahoy Mates
Sorry for the delay, BUT
As we all know the ladies can take some time to get ready
After much deliberation, testing, posts and some beer, well maybe a lot of beer, I have decided to let the lady show some skin. Many hours of testing only confirmed that for this build “not staining” would be my best move. After wiping down the hull with mineral spirits I found that this “look” suited my lady better then any other.
Thank you all for your patience and help on my build. I would have never reached this point alone, “Really” Thank you, (place bowing emoticon here)
Back to the build:
Using Buck’s suggestion to make patching dust with finer grade sandpaper I came up with Basswood Patch Mk2. The finer dust was collected and then water added. About five times as much as needed. The dust was then allowed to ‘soak’. After which I stirred in a very small amount of PVA glue. Then I put drops on areas I needed to fill. The surface tension used to keep the mixture in place. It usually took three to four applications to fill a small void.
As for the Sanding gala. I used an eraser as my sanding block. It was one of those moments when you look at something completely unrelated to the task and say, Hummm.
The finish so far is one coat of “General Finishes” satin Gel Topcoat wipe on Urethane thinned with mineral spirits. I want to paint the wales black and keel tallow, and then I will put on a few more coats of Poly: Oh yes, and a million more treenails
Suggestions, comments welcome and “again” thank you MSW

no Keith....I still need to finish the water skis.......I been so busy with the AmericA, and springtime chores, that I haven't had a chance. I still have to do the gallery pictures.
your probably right about the dwindling builds.......after all......I have a reputation to uphold

Hello Girl and Boys…..
Everybody thanks for dropping in.
About the smoking….
It's the same as they told me I can not drinking coffee anymore, building on a ship.
Those things are not happening!
So I still light up a cigarette!

Thanks Garward.
A small update I added the stern chasers tiller a couple cannons and the bowsprit. The cannons have proved easier with a draw plate. I used to turn all of them but they never came out the same size.
I must be reading Augies build log to often because i added the Syren red gunports. The color scheme i was given called for red, gold, white and black. I had them all but read and I wasn't sure where to put it so I painted the gun ports. I think it makes them pop a little more.

I do have some pictures of the reef lines. I'm threading them through, with a dot of white glue. cut and trim will come later.........I made a jig, cementing two 7mm lengths of planking together...figure that's long enough. I have them on both sides...thought it illogical to have them on just one side......with the sail rolled up, what will it be tied to? I started with the jib.
from here, they were painted with diluted white glue, to stiffen them up a bit, so they will lay straight.
the fore sheet half done. here is the jib being trimmed.
from here, there is a jib boom to be sewn on. I tried to do it the way I've seen them....a connected pattern
there are blocks that need to be set up as well.........I'm doing that as I go along. more on this soon...I have to go plant some flower bulbs for m' lady {butter-up time }

Your Mercury is a seriously good-looking ship. I can't wait to see more.

Good morning to you all,
Hello Joe, Grant and Sjors; thanks for looking in and your everlasting support.
I had some spare time to do some more work, so here goes:
Obtaining the correct information is very difficult. Only on Monday evening I managed to get the correct information regarding the correct number and position of the observation platform support struts. Didn't have much to correct, and added more struts to get the correct number. But this is only the beginning, as the real detail is in the pipework that runs along the platform - especially the rain water drain lines and the communication lines.
A view from the rear, showing the correct position and number of struts involved.
Starting off with the wind breaker shields, for the observation platform. Just one note on this. I am just fitting in the pieces, for the time being. When all the perimeter is fitted in, then I shall trim the shields down to the correct size and linear. For the time being, one shall see a lot of pieces fixed at random and not linear or equal.
A view from the front.
Progressing along the port side.
A view of the progress so far.
Shall post more pictures next Monday.

John thanks.
Germanus, Yes you are thinking as I was with regard to the strap washer, the shape will mirror that of the gammon iron. My thoughts about the finishing are to keep the bright work bright and to keep paint to the absolute minimum, basically the hull outside, all the other woodwork will get a coat of clear varnish, the deck will be oiled with teak oil. When I make another model and it follows an actual boat I will make the model look like the prototype, as for this model (which is essentially my learning exercise in boat building) I feel that I can be close to tradition and also be creative. and draw from many boats mixing older with more modern.

Then there's the big question what next. Sure you got the Gothenburg but I just can't see you doing only one or two builds.

Kevin, please ensure your wabbits are in a safe location, I don't want any harm to come to them... I'm going to hire an exterminator... There are too many vermin (marginally, the 4 legged variety) running around here... I think it is due to Sjors leaving the popcorn machine running unattended...

Just a quick update... Will have photos tomorrow... Got the mizzen top mast cut and shaped, just needs to be tapered. I've also decided, that for a change of pace, I'm going to finish up the detail work on the lower masts so I can start a bit of rigging. As much fun as making sawdust is, I need a bit of a breather...
