My master Shipwright Flirt has been ordered, can’t wait to see it.
Just as a note my future build log will use James’ photos, otherwise I’ll just feel bad about myself 😂🤣😂🤣😂

glbarlow reacted to Blue Ensign in Lady Eleanor by Blue Ensign - FINISHED - Vanguard Models - Scale 1:64
Post 26
Thinking about Masting and rigging.
There is not a lot of rigging on this build, but there are simplifications that can be enhanced to better reflect accuracy
To rig the Fifie I will be using Syren blocks and thread and referring to details given in the Sailing Drifter book by Eric March.
The Foremast can be enhanced by creating a false sheave in the masthead, rather than simply a hole to pass the halyard to the Fore yard through.
The kit provides brass etched ‘mast rings’ with six horizontal eyes, one of which is the attachment point for the Burton stays of the masts.
6162(2)
I replaced this with an ‘iron’ ring (heatshrink tubing section) and added a vertical eyebolt.
The masthead section has been painted white in accordance with practise of the day.
The Mizen Mast was treated in the same manner.
The Yards
6173
The main change I made to the yards was the replacement of a hitched tye, with an eyebolt/ hook arrangement.
The area between the slings I have fitted with a canvas covering, represented by micro-porus tape
Attaching the sails
These are connected to the yards by Robands.
Edgar March (Sailing Drifters) refers to these as Rovings being secured by a ‘Parley’ Knot, no doubt a Scottish description.
Given the scale I will use a simple square knot for the purpose.
0.20mm Syren line taken twice thro’ the sail gommets* and secured atop the yard.
*For my purposes a hole thro’ the head seam made by a needle.
6168
The top ends of the sail are secured to the yard via the Head cringles using earings thro’ holes in the yard arm.
An outstanding question is whether to add the reef points. These can be tricky little additions to get right on model sails, there is a tendency for them to stick out every which way, spoiling the effect.
I’ll ponder on that awhile. 🤔
6177(2)
A trial fit of the sails in place.
6171
I now need to attend to the tricky business of attaching parrels to the yards.

Glenn, your models always look very nice. I'm sure you'll do both Chris and James justice.

I will have another large update very soon, with pictures of the new development I have been working on for so long which, thanks to being furloughed, should be ready before December.

It's there now. The product didn't want to show on a specific kit category, but now it's sorted.
You can pre-order!

Sorry for the glitch guys, there was a slight technical that I could not sort, and didn't know about it until I awoke, and even then I couldn't sort it, as I'm an idiot...
All sorted now, though.
Cheers,
Chris

I believe James built both a Speedy in Pear and Flirt in Boxwood - could look for those build logs. They are both nice woods but nothing alike. The pear is more a dark pink (in a good way), the boxwood more yellow and gold. Pear leaves walnut deep in the dust for quality but is not near the cost of the ever harder to find boxwood. I'm looking to building Speedy in Pear and Flirt in boxwood someday when Cheerful isn't on the bench. Check Rusty's Winnie log, he's building that giant 4 foot monster in pear and has some recent nice looks posted

Hi Chris,
does the master Shipwright version include the binnacle and masthoops?

glbarlow got a reaction from mtaylor in New to MSW, Tom from The Netherlands
Well, generally that’s true of any such kit, but here I was responding to your mention of your old kit. Among other things the wood in a kit may be quite brittle and certainly designs (how it’s put together in parts and cut wood to assemble) have improved - especially if it’s a @chris watton design. You want your first build to be a positive experience so give yourself every chance upfront. With a Vanguard model you’re doing that, in my opinion.
Another newbie hint. Click and drag to select the particular part of a post you want to reply to (as I just did). A box with ‘quote selection’ will appear. Click on that and it will initiate a reply with just that text. Makes the flow of responses easier to follow by not repeating entire replies.

Hi Tom, welcome.
I would suggest building a smaller model before taking on the 3 foot plus Victory, which won’t be available for a long while. I recommend taking a look at Vanguard Models Here Chris Watten offers a selection of kits made of quality materials, of great design, with exceptional instructions. It would be a great learning experience and a much more positive one than an old kit with poor instructions. Chris also designed Amati’s Victory, so that’s another plus.
Building models is great fun, and by starting a build log you also have the forum members to answer questions and offer support as you go. Victory is the behemoth of models, but the techniques are the same as smaller models and more easily learned there. Check out Speedy or the Fifes on the Vanguard website. You won’t be disappointed.
And again welcome.

Technically Chris said after 12, not at 12😁 (I’ll see my myself out for that one).
I’ve never used boxwood (have a small bit of it though in planks and sheets), but I really like the look of pear with WOP. You can take a look at my Alert log to see how it cleans up. I would love to find a source for some pear sheets, Rusty’s Winnie’s
log is amazing.

**PRE-ORDER OPENS AT 12.01AM, THURSDAY 16th JULY**
Hello,
Seems like an age since I updated this, but I have been very busy with both Flirt and new designs for an end of year kit release.
Anyway, I can say that I have all materials in and ready for both versions of Flirt. I am waiting for the plans, manual and boxes and labels to be delivered.
I mentioned in Jim's Flirt thread that I changed my mind about the boxes at the last minute (was going to have the same boxes as Alert and Speedy, even did the full box art for the kid). Because of the length of some of the materials, the new box will be 520mm long (internal), 300mm wide and 90mm high. The kit components will fit much better.
I will paste what I wrote on the Flirt thread:
Standard version Flirt is already high spec, with laser cut pearwood and pearwood planking, Keel and bulkheads are 3mm MDF, and lower deck and stern frames are 2mm birch ply (the 2mm deck was initially meant to be done in 'Ceiba ply', but I decided this material was utter trash, and changed to much stronger 2mm birch ply) . There will be 2mm single blocks for rigging the cannon carriages if you so desire.
Master Shipwright version is crazy spec, but will look fantastic, DelF's version of Speedy looks wonderful. Flirt MS will have laser cut keel and bulkheads in the highest quality birch ply, all wooden laser cut parts in 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm and 4mm boxwood, second planking in boxwood too. Machined pearwood blocks as standard PLUS 90+ 2.5mm 2 hole pear wood blocks for rigging the cannon carriages. This version also comes with the 18' cutter as standard, with 1x2mm boxwood planking.
Both versions will have 100 metre reels of Gutterman 0.1mm thread, so there's more than enough for rigging the cannon as well as masts and yards.
Both versions will be available to pre-order at 12am, as I know everything is in hand and all materials laser cut and fittings/wood packs made up, ready to go into the boxes once here.
