Tigerdvr got a reaction from Canute in USS Essex by RGL - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1/350 - PLASTIC - as she appeared in February 1944
Exemplary job on the weathering. At first glance on the top picture, that reminded me of the photos of the Bunker Hill (or maybe the Franklin) being brought into New York after their horrific damage in the Pacific. Probably the absence of anything on the flight deck added to the impression. Great log, thanks for sharing.

And done, with the SC-2 Radar, back to the hull now.
not the kit provided radar set, this is why PE is really unbeatable

Received my replacement false deck pieces. Really appreciate MS service!
Only working on this an hour or two a day due to other projects/interests.
Placed the false deck and planked the forward bulkhead and the beak deck.
Some rough edges in the doorways yet to be smoothed.
Now on to the dreaded cannon port placement.

Funnel, what the kit provides
then what it is supposed to look like in 1943
and the metalwork begins plus some extra pipes

I finally got around to going to the hardware store and got a length or Merbu cut to length. A couple of layers of oil and she’s good to go. I intend on cutting the pedestals down by half then I can all all the completed catwalks which are strewn on the deck.
I spend the entire day doing half of the funnel, the island superstructure is a whole model in itself it’s so intricate.

You couldn't turn a hull over for planking. If your ship's stem and stern were strong enough you could adjust the fore and aft clamps to work on the deck for instance. I just stick some pieces of firm Styrofoam under the side I want elevated to get a slant as needed.

I've been using mine for a couple of years now. Big enough to easily handle the ME Confederacy. Configuration is very flexible. I've even used some the
parts independent of the base. You won't use all the fixtures all the time. The wing nut idea is the way to go.
Is it better than what works for you right now? Probably not but I think it's pretty handy and have not been tempted to use anything else since I got it.
Cheers, Harley

The ships cranes; photo one is how they are supposed to look,
the kit ones, (see grey blob) actually come with a crank which I cut off and put on the Pontos replacement which is on the fret but no instructions whatsoever. I had to change one of the tackle as the pontos kit one went somewhere into space.
finally the winch controls which I built out of spares

Yes. That would work perfectly well.

To accent the panel lines, I use these three items: Tamiya black panel line accent, Mr. Color 110 solvent, Q-tips
For this method/materials, you need to begin with a glossy paint surface, either acrylic or lacquer. I'm not sure how enamel paint would react to the Mr. Color 110 solvent, but I would not try it on enamel paint unless it had a good clear coat of acrylic over it.
Apply the Tamiya panel line accent over the panel lines and give it time to dry.
After the panel line accent is dry, dampen a Q-tip with the Mr. Color 110 solvent and gently wipe the panel lines with the solvent. Once it's had a few minutes to do it's thing, resume a gentle wiping of the panel lines with the dampened Q-tip to remove the excess accent color and leave just the highlighted panel lines. If you rub too hard, it will remove the shading inside the panel lines. If this happens, it's easily fixed. Just repeat the process to achieve the level of panel line accent you want. The solvent will not harm a dry acrylic (nor a lacquer one) surface at all. But it's important the painted surface is glossy. if not, the panel line accent will become embedded in the pigment of a rough/flat surface giving undesirable results.

It's going to be a knockout. Is the stand a commercial product?
Thanks, Harley

The major portion of masking and painting is now complete. She's ready to get some panel line treatment and touch ups before applying decals.

Holy crap, how good will you be when you can see what you are doing? You are already pushing us mere mortals over the edge🙃
Seriously, I use the Optimizer with the swing away single lens. I think you can do better than the Optimizer lighting setup. One of our members here suggested
a small rechargeable light that can be velcrowed (?) onto the frame. It has a chrome body and roHs stamped on the body. Sorry, the full name is covered
with my Velcro strip. I've had this light for at least 3-4 years now and is the best I have found. I can't remember the members name that suggested it.

Deck faded and weathered, I really think this is probably enough

Well I worked all over Christmas so I finally got some work done on the deck, the metal inserts for the deck joins, arrestor gear cables, elevator boundaries, tomorrow I’ll finish off the remaining 100 or so Tie down inserts and cable lifts and I can then mask and do the deck numbers. It’s a very blue deck which I will then have to weather which is a new learning experience but should be fun.

Denis they produce some of the 1/32 scale bombers no else wants to do B-17,B-25,B-24,Mosquito and the Lancaster and when Tamiya does the same kit HK's are about 60% the cost of a Tamy kit.I got the Norden bomb sight in,pulleys installed to the glass for the center MG and repaired the ammo boxes on the right.I hope to finish the bombardier section tomorrow installing all three MG's.This kit is a long time com'in needs to be built.

Tigerdvr reacted to DelF in Chris Watton and Vanguard Models news and updates
Well, Father Christmas came good and I found the Master Shipwright version of HMS Speedy under the tree yesterday (hardly surprising as I'd ordered it - it was just my wife who'd insisted I wait until Christmas Day - the meanie!).
I can't remember the last time I felt such a sense of anticipation when unwrapping a present and the thrill was worth the wait. The quality of the kit was all I hoped for, and more. I got the box out again first thing this morning and have been drooling over it for another hour or so. Everything just seems so well designed and presented, from the 10 plan sheets and comprehensive manual, to the neatly packaged fittings, all with labels cross-referenced to the parts list.
In one of my more anal moments examining the parts list I added up the photo-etch numbers and found there were 1,433 of these metal components alone. The quality and detail in these pe fittings is excellent.
I can't wait to get started. My only concern is that I'm already part way through two other builds and I want to finish at least one of them before starting the Speedy so that I can give it due attention.
A huge thank you to Chris Watton for designing and producing such a superb kit. He deserves every success.
