Great work, what are using to patch the hull?
Thanks, Harley

You can almost hear those engines throbbing. Great job.

Tigerdvr got a reaction from Geoff Matson in Coiling Lines Option
I’ve never been able to coil rigging very well even though there have been any number of great tips and hints offered on this website.
I am working on the ME Confederacy and am using a paper pattern to simulate the canvas covering for the great cabin. No contact cement was available so I picked up a Scotch Glue Stick which worked well laying the “canvas” down on the planks.
Then a little light bulb went off and I wondered if this easily handled adhesive could be used to coil rope. I simply dragged a length of line across the top of the Glue Stick, wrapped the line around the base of a dowel (1/4” in this trial) to the depth I wanted. Stripped the coiled rope off the dowel and had a very nice coiled rope. Fast, simple, & inexpensive. You can use a similar drill storing extra rope length on belaying pins. Check out Kevin Kenny’s video for some useful hints on setting up a jig.
The coils held their shape with no problems.
Cheers, Harley

Tigerdvr reacted to channell in Bismarck by Channell - Trumpeter - 1/200 - PLASTIC
My first job has been to improve the shape of the kit hull to make it look closer to the real thing while still allowing myself some artistic license and not getting too bogged down in making it 100% exact. In the end, aside from simply chasing accuracy in scale I guess it's really all about making the model more "mine" instead of the work of some nameless grunts and a huge injection molding machine.
Here's a smattering of Bismarck hulls to illustrate:
Top is a 1/100 fiberglass Bismarck hull, middle is my original hull and bottom is the hull I'm gonna use to finish this build.
I used the plans of the 1/100 version scaled down as a guide to get a fair approximation of the hull shape and built up/shaved down the hull from stem to stern to match the plan profile using reverse cross-sections as a guide.
I also replaced the bow portholes by drilling fresh circles in styrene sheet and inletting them into the hull:
I did this because the kit portholes are warped due to the curvature of the hull and the realities of molding the hull in 1 large piece.
I was able to drill and grind the stern portholes from behind to get the same effect:
I also re-profiled the stern itself as the kit interpretation is too sharp and narrow.

Really like that filament method. If practical, what filament size would you use for a 1/64 (3/16) ship?
Thanks, Harley

Decking
1. I used Alaskan yellow cedar for the deck. I’d also used it for the deck on my Brazzera. It is perfect for this application.
2. Decking layout. I would do it slightly different next time. I would let some of the bow planks close to the center plank taper so that I could end up with all of the planks except the center plank being the same width at the bow. I could have been more careful to achieve the same objective at the stern as well.
This is where I am at today. It may be a few weeks before I have any updates. I hope these are of some interest and value to those starting out.
Best Regards,
Ian

False Deck
1. I used an 1/8th inch piece of basswood cut longitudinally. Worked well.

wales and stuff
1. Take your time with the “fancy” pieces that run from the bottom of the wales to the top of the transom. That’s really all I can say, just take your time. I didn’t and had to improvise. Pretty much concealable in the end.
2. My approach for building the counter worked well. Sorry no construction pictures. I laminated several 1/8th inch thick pieces of boxwood edge to edge. Overlaid this prepared structure (there is one for each side) with the pencil-traced outline of the frame using Scotch’s (3M™) matte tape, cut it out, carefully manicured it and glued it into the frame. This worked better IMHO than fitting each plank into the frame.

JMHO, Gorilla wood glue seems to work well. Most of my Confederacy has been constructed with the Gorilla.
