BLACK VIKING reacted to greyhawk in Scharnhorst by greyhawk - Hachette - 1:200 - parts work
As promised, here's update 2 to catch up with the current issue.

The hull structure is expanded lengthwise with another segment and two frames are added.
Now I already hear the gnashing of teeth about my lack of a building slip, but with the thickness and density of these MDF boards and the amount of supports and strengtheners that will be added starting next issue, I'm convinced I won't need one. I built the hull of the Bismarck without a slip and never had an issue and that one was much less robustly built.

I also get to add a bunch of photo etch parts to the rear 28cm gun turret.

The garboard was formed by edge-bending the neighboring streak. I used this plank to trace the curve onto the garboard, cut, and sand into shape. These streaks were easy to form and glue into place.

What has been stunting progress is the installation of the neighboring streak. Having trouble getting a tight, flush fit and getting the proper shape into the rabbet. I believe a couple bulkheads are over-faired and slight shimming needs to take place. You'll notice tick marks placed, but these will be redone after the next streaks are in place.

Side note- at this point this project is more difficult than the longboat. ;-)

The Scharnhorst is Germanys first battleship built after world war 1. This is a 140 issue partwork published by Hachette and developed by the designers of the Bismarck partwork. Note me not saying Amati. It seems Amatis former design guy went and opened up a design studio of it's own.

Which maybe explains why this build is kinda wonky. I needed three issues 1s to get one where the included gun turret was actually buildable instead of being a mess of gaps and wrongfulness. So I think that's a terrific start to something that will either be totally awesome or a horrible horrible letdown. Either way, we'll be entertained.

Updates will be weekly, even though I have subscription, I'll build each issue only when it has also been released in the shops. This is an effort to get a bit more organized. I'm also breaking this rule in about two days because you get a two-for this week with all the replacement issues I had.

    Stage: 1

Oh good, it's MDF. Fun. I love my wood dust being toxic. Remind me to get some new breathing masks.

First phase. We build up part of the forward framework and the body of the rear gun turret. This one has the bonus of actually fitting together for the most part. The turret will be height adjustable, so that's nice. It's a bit bare right now, but that'll change next issue

Tonight I got the stern lanterns and flag staff installed. With that, the ship is complete! I'm still going to install rope coils this weekend and touch up a couple things but it looks like by the end of the weekend this build may be 100% complete!

This is the making of the Jacob's Ladder. I can understand why it became replaced by ratlines. They must have been a horror to climb on a pitching, rolling ship with the ladder twisting and slapping back and forth. question: were the ladders secured to the mast to make them more safe?

All the good contemporary illustrations, especially Carpaccio, agree that the ladder was fixed to the maintop and to the deck (presumably by eyebolts, Druxey). So, it must be concluded there was no other tethering

At least one illustration shows both Jacob's Ladder AND ratlines (or at least it looks like he's climbing ratlines, though you can't see them) Note the matelot perched on the mainyard.

    Confusing, isn't it?

I did take some pictures from the front and I'm surprised I did not upload them last night. I will post them when I get home tonight. When I'm 100% done I am hoping to be able to take her out on the deck or driveway to take some pictures using natural light. Trick will be finding a day when it is not windy but in Kansas, I'm not sure if those days exist.

A new build so I have something to do while waiting for Vasa parts.

I ordered this from Maristella and apart from the excellent service Mr. Pavlovich offers I believe that they offer the best prices in Europe.
My only regret is that I did not order one of Marisstellas own kits instead. But then again I have a reason saving up money for that in the future.

The Xebec is the smallest shipmodel I have had so far. But the rigging is something that I for some reason wanted to try out. And it will be like a practice before I go on with my Pinco Genovese that is more like a semi scratch build from Euromodel Como.

    Here's the pics:

    Stuff:
They updated the older kit from 1027 to 1427.

There are 4 sheets of plans. 3 and 4 are of the updates.

Instructions in Italian, but there is a paper included with the English translation.
