Andrew, thanks for looking in.  I hope I can pull it off!  NeOmega also makes a cool 'Hurricat' catapult which is a little more detailed with a bunch of PE.  The Hurricane by itself isn't very appealing to me, but on this catapult, it looks really amazing.  I think HpH may also make catapults in 1/48 and 1/32 scale for the Arado.

This is where I am now.  After cleaning up the ejector marks on the bottom and sides, I installed various pieces into the bottom which included some Eduard PE.  After being annoyed about the quality of the kit from the many ejector marks, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the pieces are fitting together.  Test fitted the fuselage sides as well, and everything matches up well.  I worried about the orientation of the first bulkhead as you only attach it along the bottom of this stage, but its angle is locked into place perfectly by the two floor pieces on either side.  So, kudos to Airfix on this step - big redemption from the ejection pin fiasco 👍

The two main PE assemblies in the picture above are molded by Airfix as pretty much flat, non-descript platforms similar to the rest of the floor pieces.  The Eduard PE ends up being quite complicated/detailed assemblies for these replacement details.  Who knows if they will be seen when the fuselage is buttoned up, but it was fun making them.

    Thanks for looking in!

Spent one evening soaking all the sets, and then started with the fuselage (or is it a hull if it's a boat plane?).  It's a little smaller than I would have expected - maybe a touch longer than the Wildcat and Buffalo I just finished.

The kit's parts seem very sharp and well defined with lots of detail.  The one crazy thing is that the bottom and side pieces have a ridiculous amount of ejector pin marks!  I don't think you can see much of the inside of the model when it's buttoned up, but I went ahead and sanded and filled them.  Here's a picture showing all the pock marks!

    Thanks for looking in!

Peanut6 how's it going, was wondering
    " why doesn't he write anymore. 🤔 "
I have only been to the race track once in my life. Lol. Don't be to hard on HHH, he was just trying to broaden my vocabulary  lol. But he did promise not to do it again lol.
I am done for the night, I just sprayed a flat clear coat on the ship. Plus , I decided to blackin all the brass for the rudder.  I think it would look better black. The plan shows white, but  I seen some in  black and I like it  that way. I primed the brass with stick-it from home hardware.  Then flat high heat paint, then a clear coat . I am hoping that works, I will let you know .
This ship is fun to build, but not really happy with the decal of the Mayflower.  It doesn't really look all that good. I can live with the windows  they aren't too bad.  But the flower makes  it look weird  to me.
So this is how she sits tonight, I have to let everything dry for the night anyway. And I just notice I am missing a fender, yep all done with the final coat, looking it over happy with it and I says HAY something missing  lol. Hopefully it will go on tomorrow  with out damaging  the finish coat . O well what can you do . Later
    everyone.

I decided to start the "hard bit", as @gjdale called it, with the tentacles.  I could not find anything online resembling kraken tentacles that I was happy with.  So I started playing around with other ideas.  I needed something that was the right thickness and bendable, but also sturdy enough to hold up the bottle on its own.  I finally landed on #2 AWG stranded copper wire from Home Depot for about $3/ft.

I will coat the wire with a thin layer of modeling clay, taper the tips, and add some suckers.

    Hello,
the bowsprit is now fast and the last „seats of ease“ are installed. The next things are the boomkin cleats. But that may take a little time.

Should I tar the gammoning? I'm not sure

Thanks for the likes and all the suggestions regarding the braces for the stabilizer and wing.  I continue to defer that work.  I received the wire that I ordered and it might be workable.  But, the model also presents some problems with the attachment points for the braces on the stabilizer.  So, I am considering that as well.

Meanwhile, I skipped that step and continued on with the next steps which added the ribs to the lower wing stubs and also did some additional work on the cockpit including the instrument panel.  I got through all of those steps.  Next I'll put the fuselage aside and start working on building the two outer sections of the lower wing.  It was really good to get back into things where I felt like I was making a lot of progress.

Here are the pictures of the current state.

    Hi There,
You may have already considered this but thought I'd mention anyway....
Regarding cotton Thread, Have you tried making a "Bodkin" using the thread?
I use this quite a bit with Rigging and it makes things much easier to run lines through tiny holes.

Take you thread and coat 20mm or so in CA, run your fingers over the Thread with ca.
    This should stiffen that end.
Finish the "Bodkin" by cutting the very end of the CA coated thread at a shallow angle and you have your "Bodkin."

If the "Bodkin" gets bent, more CA and cut the end again.

(I don't know if you are a fan of running the thread through a Beeswax block, but that may help also if the thread is to move within small holes.)

Hope this makes things easier for you.

    Cheers....HOF.

Thanks again for all the likes.

I realize these recent pictures pretty much look the same.  But, I am now done with the 40 diagonal bracing wires on the fuselage.  Who would've thought that a Sopwith Camel model would have more "rigging" than the yacht America?

Another example of the dubious order of steps in the instructions....do you see the four lengthwise wood strips across the top/back of the fuselage?  The instructions had you glue those in place before doing the diagonal braces directly below them.   That's just nuts, and fortunately I noticed and left those off until after the braces were in place.

So with that I am through step 17.  Next up is some braces between the horizontal stabilizer and the rudder.  For some reason, the kit shifts to recommending black cotton thread for these and the braces on the main wings, instead of the black fishing line that has been used so far.  The cotton thread is a bit thicker, making it more difficult to feed through the holes in the photo etch bits that serve as end points.  So, I am not sure if I will follow the instructions or just continue to use the fishing line for everything.  I don't see the fishing line or the cotton thread as particularly representative of the real thing.

Thanks to those who have looked in and especially to those who've hit the like button.  Funny, I think I've been getting more likes for this than I ever did for the America build log.  I'll just chalk that up to overall increased traffic on this site over the years.

I am now half done with the fuselage tension cables, having completed those on the bottom and on the right side.  Top and left side ones yet to do.

I've decided to proceed with the kit-supplied photo-etched turnbuckles and the fishing line for the tension cables.  I figured at normal viewing distance the flat turnbuckles would give a good enough impression.   Besides, one of the reasons I opted for this kit over the Model Airways one was the additional photo etch parts of this kit.

So I have now glued on (using CA) all the little photo-etched bits including the turnbuckles that act as end points for the tension cables.  I then did the first four of those cables, starting on the bottom.  It has gone ok so far but my hope is that when I get to the sides and top I will have gotten better at keeping the line taut.  I have four done, 36 to go.

Yes its crazy….if I really push it and do a 12 hour day I could prob make about 2000…..of the smaller sizes.  But its not fun work.  So 1000 or even 1500 will have to do.

I have tweaked my process as I learn the technologies.  I am sure other mfg’s can make them quicker but I think I now have a solid technique and process.

it does mean however that I must redo the cad files I use for the blocks which takes forever, but I only need to do that once for each size.  Each size also needs its own jig and hold down device…designed…laser cut and built.

But again,  I only have to do this once and then its pretty routine.

The new process is quicker and produces a cleaner well shaped block.  Believe it or not, the idea came to me one night around 3am when I couldnt fall asleep.  I sprung out of bed and made some notes…worked on it the next day.  And to my surprise it works a treat and makes it easier for me once the initial setup is completed.

The craziest stuff pops into my brain in the wee hours of the morning.  Its nuts.

    I fully agree.
But, the advantage of the MRNS book is that I have a lot of drawings on a scale of 1/100. And it is easy for me to enlarge them to a scale of 1/50.
So I'm going to make the sections of MRNS and place them next to the current bulkheads. And then see what makes the most sense.

I promesed this build would be a long way to a finished model. I'm doing this well, haha 😇

    Hello,

    Alex-Ks1 -- big thanks

Here are some updated images of the continuing work with the stern gallery outer faces. I like how the outer windows turned out. Certainly more historically accurate (haha – this kit has nothing to do with historical accuracy).. though I am a bit regretful, in that all of the previous work (interior floorings, gold trimming on upper and lower inner window frames, and gallery planking are now totally hidden from view - oh well.

FYI: Last image offers a comparison of current kit's metal bit compared to vintage kit's solid bronze bits.

    Regards,

I am starting a new topic as the last one just got huge....over 2000 replies.

Its fitting that I would do so today actually.   Today marks ten years since I have started Syren.  Its been a long and interesting journey.  Ten years and miles and miles of rope made and thousands and thousands of blocks sold.   Here's to the next ten years.  Maybe not that long, LOL.

For a bit of news....I have finally received the parts to maintain my CNC Mill.  So blocks are on tap over the next few weeks.  In fact I have already started.   3/32" singles and doubles are now in stock.   More will follow. Although half of the 3/32" singles already sold out.  UGH!

Onward and upward as they say.

    Finally.

It isn’t perfect, but the worst crimes are below the waterline where I can hide them with paint. All in all I’m pretty happy with it. Some scraping and sanding will clean it up nicely and it shouldn’t need much filling.

Next up is the rubbing strakes then I can start remodeling the deck.

Hello again everyone, first of all, apologies for my absence, or not giving news, but my spirits and health did not help me.
After a long time in which I have had many serious health problems and some personal ones, it has been a long and hard time that has kept me away from many of the things that I liked and wanted the most. Now they have retired me due to my health pathologies, although I am still young (52 years old) I hope that now, after finishing treatments and achieving stability, a very tough judicial process with the SPANISH STATE to achieve retirement, now I am retired and with time for me, my family and my hobbys, with my health is good, of course,  as I said, I hope to have more time to dedicate to the things that I feel like doing, take care of my health, logically,  reading, watching movies, and learning to make ship models is something that I always wanted to do, I have a lot to read and see to catch up, I will do it little by little.
I reiterate my apologies, but really, this has been a very difficult path for me and my spirits were very low and I didn't want to do anything other than think about being able to recover.
PS I'm replying again in this thread because I don't think it's necessary to open a new one.
