    Hi all,

As the carriages on Vasa are black and not red, I wonder about the wheels? Are they also black?

Now, with the summer holidays behind me, I am back in the fora and in the workshop   However, first a little postscript on things that were completed before the vacations:

A couple of pictures that show the different components of the y-axis spindle. Also visible on the first picture are the parts of the friction brake for the dial, short piece of acrylic rod that is pressed down on the spindle with a set-screw. Tightening or loosing the screw allows to adjust the friction.

Dave, thanks indeed. One of these days I may get to your level with interior lighting.

Martyn, JanV is right. This has been discussed with we Vasa nut cases. And yes that new DAgostini looks to be excellent. Even the canon artillery is correct.  Though it is a very big model. In a way I’m relieved that it will not be available in the USA, I would be too tempted. Too few here probably know much about the ship. This, of course, is not the case in Europe. The vasa Museum is one of the most popular in Europe. So for modelers the Vasa is a well known ship.

E.J, This is only my second model ship. The first one was soooo many years ago. Did some other hobbies (plastic) in between, but always wanted to get back to wood. Here is one that fell through the cracks. Needs to be completed. Hmmm.

Back to wood -pitting aside the falconets for a bit after redoing the vertical frames and instead starting the mizzenmast and its platform.

Thanks, mates for your continued interest

    Cheers,

    Hi Mates,

    Thanks for dropping by -always;

EJ_L  Yes, my thoughts as well – but needed to make the changes. They would have indeed bugged me J

Edwin-  always a pleasure when you drop by and comment –thanks !

Buck, see my notes below regarding wheel sizes as well as carriage framing. Thanks so much for your thoughts.

    Mark, see last pic lol

JanV, yes a bit of a headache trying to add arguably a bit too much detail. But I am mostly enjoying the challenges.

Dave & Patrick Thanks for your suggestions and photos.  Good idea on the angling. Dave point well taken indeed,,,

Some thoughts –strictly for edification, not as complaints.

Mentioned before; Vasa was mounted with many diff. size artillery. I chose the two that are circled as my guides for the main weather deck, and the two falconets for the quarterdeck. Chose to replicate the looks of the carriages and their wheel sizes.

Even so the actual artilleries are all wrong. (Casting is way above my skill set – forever!!) So after-market examples were good enough; actually very nice indeed. Huge improvement over Corel included examples (as with most kits)

Note Clayton Johnson’s amazing work in these two photos.

In regard to carriage spacing, note the actual carriage length beyond back of cannon. I had originally built all carriages in this correct way, but subsequently realized that I needed to trim the entire overhang away in order to have the carriages fit more properly onto the too narrow weather deck. Again Corel!!.

Main deck (no forecastle) seems better scaled. Though I still needed to cut carriage overhangs. Also - I know that I need to re-paint my knighthead figures (PS; weak quality castings)

For the dummy carriages in the upper and lower gun decks, well that was a gift ha ha.

So working on the fix for the quarterdeck falconets. Smaller blocks are the first step, scaling also looks better.

Chuck and his Syren Comp.  We are very good acquaintances. In fact all rigging are also from his company, excellent quality products indeed; well deserved plug Chuck…

    Hello folks,

    Sometimes it just happens!

Shipment #4 arrived today! 2 weeks early!!! And I'm not even finished painting the decorations from last shipment.

And this is the contents of issue 9, 10 11 and 12:

frames15 to 19, the last bit of the keel and deck or whatever one should call them. More like reinforcements.

    One cannon:

    Another knight:

    A harp player:

And a Golem or demon or something:

If you look at the size of the knight and the harpist and then look at the instructions on how to paint them, you'll see that the level of detail is almost absurd!

So you know I will need these (That came "free" in this shipment.):

Well, back to painting last month's decorations!

About the eyes. Try using a light light grey. This to avoid the "pop eye look". One trick is to paint a horizontal sliver of grey as the white of the eyes. After that a thin horizontal sliver of black as the " eye" itself across the grey, almost like a cross. A brush with a good point is necessary, use fairly watery paint to paint the black.

After this you paint the skin color around it, "shaping" the eye with skin color. Basically keeping an almond shape of light grey and black.

But at this scale, (the figure looks like about 1:72 scale, the eyes would not be visible at "normal viewing distance". That is a person looking at the ship from about 1,5-2 feet away would not see the eyes so omitting them is an option.

Some more advice for painting metal. First scrub the figure with hot water, a little dishwashing detergent and a toothbrush. Let it dry. Prime with GW black primer ( GW = Games Workshop). It is a very good primer. After the figure is painted give it a coat of clear varnish, either dull, semi shiny or shiny, depending on what you like.

Jan: One more frame to go in October. The stern is built like a box and can't really be called frames.

I was wrong about frames 9 and 10!
If you look at part D3 ("deck") here you'll see that the slot fits with the width of frame 9 and 10.
So DeAgostini has some meaning with the "bulge" by frame 9.

Jan: Thanks for your input. you are right, but I can still give them some extra work in compensation for my extra

If 9 and 10 change place the curve would be smoother. (Outside part of reinforcement P2)

Also the inner shape of the frames indicate that 9 and 10 should change place:

All frames up to 8 have this little shelf, then 9 is straight and 10 has the shelf again. 12,13 and 14 are again straight. (red elipses = shelf, black = straight.)
So, anyone building this, do not glue frames 9 and 10 in place until this little problem is solved.
And yes, I should have seen this before I assembled and glued them   but I was blinded by the otherwise excellent quality of the kit.

Cobr@ and Patric: I will probably go with "matt metal black from Admirality. if nothing because I like that particulary paint. It really looks like the old painted cannons and anchors you see in museums etc.

Enemeink: I have visited that homepage before but forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me and giving me the link.

    Tiny update:

    The decoration:

And where it will go eventually:

The blue/white/red shield was a pain to paint, the whole thing only 20 mm high. Hopefully the fuzzy lines will not show as much when the whole stern is completed.

Now only the anchor left, then another 5-6 weeks of waiting. But next time theres 4 issues coming, maybe they will last a week at least...

    Hi all, and welcome

the cannon (probably the 3 or 1 pounder)

I think the quality is quite good. There are also 3 handles(or whatever it's called) to attach. Instructions say it should be painted bronze.

frame #5 is 170 mm wide! starting to get a feel of the size of the ship now! She'll be 109 cm long in the end...

This is as far you get with these first two issues.

Will do the gun carriage in the next few days, and some painting next week I hope. Then I'll have to wait four weeks for the next shipment.
I do this with mixed feelings. on one side the wait is good because you have the time to really get things right and put more effort in it.
(I'm the kind that have a urge to rush through to get my hands on the next step in the build)
Also I'll have time to finish off my stagecoach from Amati and do some serious work on my Pinco Genevese

On the other hand I HATE waiting for things to arrive. When I order stuff on the web I usually order from those who can deliver it in shortest possible time... And I have to wait for the Vasa parts 36 times over!!!

    See you...

Well, I got the first two issues today.

Unlike the Victory and such there is no magazine, only the building instructions.

There was also a poster of the Vasa.

3 frames, stern decorations, thread  and one cannon is what you get in these first two issues.

I promised my 10-year old son that he could "help" me build it so I have to wait until he comes home from school before building can start.

I will continue later this evening.
