Thanks Jeff.  Yes, the extra light is really helpful.  We had a stage where every time the electrician came past he'd say, "You f...... blokes can't f...... work in this f...... light.  F...... hang on a bit and I'll f...... get some more f...... lights for you."  He has a limited vocabulary, but a heart of gold!

    Hello Shipmates.
Thanks Paddy. I have to say your Cross section is one of the reasons I went into the cross section building.

The Orlop Deck is now in place
Very happy with the fit and the look.

The deck planks on the Top Right look as if they are not stained... Yes they are
The Housing and the Sail store walls are not fixed as they will need to be cut to size.

Now I can start to Cut the timber for the bulwark of the Orlop deck.
And so the Lower gun deck starts next week.

    Thanks for looking in.

    Regards Antony.

The coppering is proceeding - slowly.  I am getting to the stage when I am unable to apply the full seven-plate strips.  I can see that as I approach the waterline it will be possible to apply fewer and fewer in strips.  Nevertheless it has worked out well and has enabled accurate laying of the plates until the layers hit the waterline at the stem and the stern.  Now all the rest should (?) fall into place so that both sides of the coppering  are symmetric.  Well, as earlier wrote - that's the theory.

I have made an incidental discovery too: in getting rid of tarnish, rubbing a piece of lemon seems to work as well as the salt, carb soda lemon mixture.

The following 4 photos take the copper up to the waterline at the stern.

The following show progress to date.

The first couple of rows before and after reaching the waterline proved to be quite difficult.  Both trimming and curving the plates at the stem and the stern were a bit of a pain.  In one or two cases it took nearly hour to get the right shape and then to attach it.  My vocabulary was fully tested.

About 4 hours since last mention of time.. Well i have been plodding away at first layer planking and learning lots, didn't realise it was such a process.. I am aiming at a plank each side after work and maybe two like today.. Lots of other duties call.

You may notice i added my first stealers as it is already getting pinchy at stern..

    Another small update.

Yesterday I was able to get the planking rabbet cut on both sides plus some shallow grooves forward to locate the cant frames.  Unfortunately our friendly electrician at the museum has done so well in providing extra lighting at the model makers desk that I found it impossible to get good shadow across the model to show up the rabbet line properly, but you can see it at the stern if you look for it.

I really must try and find some additional time for the Pritt or it will take the next decade to get anywhere.

    Excellent planking Glenn.
I've often wondered though, why when we pay such particular attention to scale every where else on the model, we use long strips of wood (often the full length of the hull) on the final planking. I admit it really looks "neat" when the planks run the length of the hull. But in reality there is a described length attributed to those planks. Shouldn't we use scale length planks as well??
    Just asking.

Planking the Aft Deck...not sure what it is called in Italian. Job is going well after about 1-1/2 hours today cutting individual planks at 80mm long. The planks for the deck are measuring 1x3.5 mm. To tell you all the truth I am having nothing but fun with this one. Very relaxed, listening to some music and cutting one plank at a time. Comments, advice and suggestions are most welcome folks. I have so much to learn.

Thanks and all have a great day!

I did not know that! Fascinating info!!!!   If coppering was necessary I would definitely go with the caravel style of planking it would make perfect sense as smooth surfaces are so much easier to sheathe. You must have some terrifying creepy crawlies in those waters!
Thanks for the info about that. I really enjoy getting educated on that stuff! Helps!

    Hi Slog,

Your sheave looks brilliant, great work.  and a good soution for making them.

Sorry to hear about your anchor but you made a good save . Have you tried using electrical solder and an electric or gas soldering iron? I have used them with success on up to 1.5mm brass wire, it has a lower melting point than silver solder

    Tom,

We're talking about a cutter built in and used for work in tropical waters!  Coppering was very common in small craft used in northern Australian waters - even a lot of the pearling luggers were coppered.

Thanks Russ. I finished up the shields on the other side and took a shot a painting and weathering the oars. Just painted tan over the brown, scuffed it a litte and did a black wash over it. I saw another model with the oars stowed on deck which looked cool, so I'm putting these there for now, not sure if I have them in the running position when finished or not.

After finishing my first wooden build, I decided to take a step backwards and build the Revell Viking Ship, since it was a gift by my wife and she would be upset if I didn't attempt it. I did already start the kit and figured, why not do a build log?

One thing I did want to try with a plastic build again was to make the plastic look like real wood (I always admired other plastic models that accomplished this). I did the method of spraying a tan under coat, but instead of dry brushing and washing with browns and blacks, I applied a stain lightly over the already molded wood grain, and so far I like the results. The only negative to this approach was the amount of time it takes for the stain to fully dry and cure on the plastic undercoat (several days).

I'm currently at the step of undercoating the deck, and will be applying two seperate stains to differentiate the crossbeams from the deck baords.

Seeing the age frame of the cutter ...are you going to the clinker type of planking or are you going to use caravel?
Both are going to hand you some very interesting times detail wise and fitting wise. Good luck and have FUN!!

Oh Jeez Im not sure Tom.. I hadn't even thought about that, but i know I do want to really take my time on the second planking... Any suggestions welcome on the planking..

So spent about 6 hours since last mention.. I soaked my supplied 3 ply bulwarks and bent in jig last week, they didn't really come up that well after their 24 hr drying time.. They sprung back a lot so i gave them a second round with a bit more curvature at bow....

I wanted to get my bulkwarks on after doing a few planking runs so I could make sure everything was tidy in interior and not have epoxy dripping down into finished work.. Jeez that stuff is hard to get off. Getting the bulwarks to sit right was no easy task and keeping the epoxy from going everywhere was the main worry.. I was also concerned about keeping the bulwarks standing plumb and square consistently with deck and hull. So i made the three supports which kept it all straight whilst also giving something to prevent clamps over squeezing hull... I am happy with the way it cured and it seems really strong...

    Thanks for looking.. Ollie

Hi all. I have made a milestone and started planking.. I added bow filler blocks of balsa to aid in bending and some shims were needed on ply deck at bow..

I am happy with my progress and i think i am doing it right with the tempory plank.. Measurements for the  first side showing.. I am guessing you want to try make the other side suit as much as possible ? (in regards to measurements.. esp at bow and stern)

I am also wondering about false keel and if its best to fit it over first layer planking or do you scribe it in and fit to ply frame?  (I will be scratch building my false keel)  Thanks all.. Ollie

I believe that the clinker style is most likely for the cutters as they were built by smaller, privately owned yards that specialized in the smaller local craft and not in the larger naval craft like sloops, brigs and frigates. Done well as you should be able to it will look very well and emphasize the fine lines of the typ. cutter. Have fun!

    Ollie,

We tend to think that cutters were clinker built, but many were not - especially the later ones.

King's painting that you're using for your avatar looks like she's carvel planked, but his other painting, 'Mermaid and the Maccassa Trepangers' isn't quite so clear as to planking.

    What do you think?
