Thank you all for your wonderful encouraging comments, and for the likes.

Since it was cold and snowing most of the day I started tidying up the shop I started at the pilot cutter bench which had been used for a while as a wide shelf while the cutter was on the launch trolley.

I cleaned and used some past floor wax on the bench then polished it up. After putting the cutter back up on the bench I decided I needed to make a different stand. so made a start on it.

It is more like a cradle that might be constructed in a yard than a fancy stand, I think it will be more effective and more solid, there will be some adjustable pads to seat against the hull. The stern cradle parts are the first ones, depending on the weather I might have a full day at the yard tomorrow

It was nice to get her up on the bench again.

Shaping thοse 4mm dowels for the upper 1/3 of the masts is a really nightmare.
After 3 efforts and additional broken dowels, the 4th try was succesive...

Here's the bowsprit guard I installed way back when I installed my rotating work table. Something told me way back I would eventually knock off the bowsprit with one.

Thank you, and i really mean it. I needed to hear this now because i really think my build sucks. The closer i get to the staining process the more i see all the faults, all the glue spots, all the faults all over it.

I have started to fill in the holes between the ornaments and the planks. Because i never sanded it down before i attached the ornaments.
As you can see here for example:

This is what i have achieved so far.

The bowsprit is now doweled and glued in place in the hull. The dowel is 3mm and in to the hull about 4mm. I also glued a wedge unseen behind the heads. It fits very sturdy even before the glue sets. I used PVA.

Most of the rigging is now on the bowsprit an I have 3 more lines to add to the bow of the ship before I tie it all together rigging the bowsprit to the hull.

I'll trim the dowel after the glue sets.

Hello all, just a quick note to say I'm back.  No need to go into details other than to say both my parents passed away of natural causes, one day apart, in March.  I've tried to model a few times since then but without any progress.  But finally today I picked up the modeling tools and got back to work slowly.

Here's a few pics of where Conny sits today.  I hope to finally be posting updates on progress again.
    Thanks and happy modeling!

I've fitted the "black" strake and the one above it to the Port side so that the Chains have something to attach to. I've also finished treenailing both :

    Build log part 57

have attached the burton pedants of the main top, which take the jeers blocks tackle of the lower mainyard later when the yards are made. Have to rig all the lines that go to between  tops and lower mast caps first, before the caps and topmast parts are (dry)- fitted

I`m showing here some of my ladderway hatch openings, not doing them too narrow, so a  mediun sized Crew member can enter up and  down in upright Position giving attemntion, but without bumping his head.

These Swan Class vessels are rather small and the deckbeams therefore quite low, but I did my best to provide Standing height (without hats) on all decks, at least between the deckbeams, based on the contures of the modified Amati plan Frames.

Will have to do the ladderway hatch stachions I have forgotten to place, now before I move on, Need to look for a good solution. (I saw some inspirations here at MSW already)

Thanks to Bill, I'm taking a break from bowsprits and returning to hammock nets. Bill suggested tieing the nets in startegic places before gluing. I precision cut the four sets of nets after folding them to fit with clamps overnight. I inserted all four into the stanchions and I just finished sewing the first set. I'll trim and glue it next. Thanks to Bill, I think this will works.

Well, I finally had to bite the bullet and start the work on the head. I made and installed the hair and scroll brackets, the upper and lower cheeks and the bolsters. These were all made from boxwood using a sheet of drawings from Sam as templates. Given my lack of success in the past scribing molding lines on small scale pieces, I chose, as I've done on other models to create the moldings by using laminated parts with rounded edges. The bracket pieces were bent to shape before laminating.

I also drilled the holes for the mainstay collar in the gammoning knee and for the bobstays in the stem.

Next up will be the rails and head  timbers. As a note for the future, I tried to fit the kit casting for the figurehead, but decided that it is unacceptably too large ( and not very good). I'm now unsure what I'm going to do about a figurehead. My choices would seem to be a wood carving or using Sculpey, neither of which I've ever done. Sam had once offered to do a resin casting, but I've been unable to reach him by PM or e-mail. Does anyone know if he is alright?

got a coat of high build primer attatched- beware of mixing primers as they reacted with each other! Not a real problem as most will be sanded back to give a smoother base for the copper plates. Also glued the three pieces for the rudder together- the poor admirals clothes pegs get violated once more

    Hi.
Many thanks for your encouraging  Sometimes I need it.

As you can see we have started the rigging.
We started by adding the standing rigging then we added the rat lines.

    This is the test run

I made a jig for the spacing of the art lines.

Then we painted pva glue onto the lines and placed the jig with the ropes spaced out.

This is what they looked like after removing the jig.

Then we started on making the sails.

We used a piece of scrap MDF board and placed a copy of the plans onto it. Then we covered it in Cling Film (Cooking Film).

Then the cloth was stretched evenly over the plans.
Then drawing pins were used to hold the cord taunt while pva glue was brushed onto the cord and the outer edge of the sail.

This is how it looked after removing the drawing pins.

Just cut out rough then trimmed with sharp scissors.

Will add the sails to the ship after marking the stitching and attaching them to the yards.

    Thanks for following my build.

Today, I started by working on the Keel , I did alot of fairing and then applied a second coat of epoxy. ( I hope to have the Keel ready for paint next ) I told Piet that I would be making the Main Sail, However I decided to try and make Gennaker # 2 ( the shorter Gennaker) with the Blue rip-stop Nylon, This material was alot harder to work with than the Fabric for the first 2 sails. ( the glue has to be placed in such away as not to effect it's ability to Furl )It worked out after the second try , I am happy with how the seams turned out and it's ability to Furl, I then turned my attention to making the second Steering wheel , Here are the results

There are several people who have built the AL Santa Maria, including myself. I passed my plans onto another builder but I think if you search the data base for all Santa Maria builders and then send them a direct message you might have more luck in getting a response. Alternatively, post questions and we will put photos up to show you the way we did it.

Mounting the stanchions: First I marked the spot on the side of the rail since the next step is to file and sand off the varnish to give the CA glue a place to stick. Next I applied the CA glue and carefully set the stanchion in place. I wet my fingers each time so the tiny stanchion did not want to stick to my finger instead of the rail.

Good question - I don't remember if I did or not   . I'll find out tomorrow when I pay a visit to my daughter's place where some of my stuff still is, but I hope I did .

The Bolsters sit atop the trestletrees and ease the angles of the Shrouds and Forestays over them to prevent chafing :

Here's how I make stanchions. First I take bar stock. Then bend it to rough shape on a jig piece of wood the right size. Then I bend it to final shape with a bending tool I got at the jewelry making department. Then I cut the end to almost equal and finally Dremel the ends to be flat and equal.
